my Wii U budget projected budget is taking into assumption I'll want to buy a 64 GB SD card at launch....

Woah, wait a sec, I just double-checked and the Wii U only supports SDHC (Max SD card size 32 GB), not SDXC(64GB-2TB). According to wikipedia supporting SDXC requires licensing some proprietary tech from MS so that's probably why.

A glooming peace this morning with it brings;
The sun, for sorrow, will not show his head:
Go hence, to have more talk of these sad things;
Some shall be pardon'd, and some punished:
For never was a story of more woe
Than this of Sega and her Mashiro.

For small games like the ones found on 3DS, smartphones, and tablets, 32GB is more than enough. For console-size games, it's pathetic.

In Nintendo's defense, they are very good at file size compression. I have a ton of games on my Wii's 8GB SD card, and I've only used a fraction of the card's total capacity. Same thing with my 3DS.

Even with console games, 32GB would get you at least 3 or 4 full size games (unless the publisher decides they don't want to do any compression). Last gen, almost every console game could fit onto a 8.7GB DVD disc. Plus, like you said Nintendo has very good compression techniques. I am not worried. Besides, you will be able to use USB drives too.

The 3DS officially only supports SDHC (and regular SD), but has been shown to accept SDXC as well. The Wii didn't officially support SDHC at first, but it was added via software update with the SD card channel.

If the 3DS officially supports only SD and SDHC, then how can it support SDXC? By the way why do SD cards over 32GB need to have a special name ("SDXC")? Why can't they all be considered high capacity?

I believe the difference in name refers to a slight difference in tech, either in the hardware or the software. What likely happened is Nintendo bought SD card readers that had the capability for SDXC, but they only advertised SDHC, most likely because of licensing costs. As I said, the Wii didn't officially support SDHC cards until they patched it in, even though the hardware was capable of it all along.

That is what I like to call a "blockbuster" Announcement.
A former Blockbuster UK EE told Joystiq that this is just a list of speculated games.  It's nothing different from what Gamestop does, especially during the run up to the launch of new consoles.

Woah, wait a sec, I just double-checked and the Wii U only supports SDHC (Max SD card size 32 GB), not SDXC(64GB-2TB). According to wikipedia supporting SDXC requires licensing some proprietary tech from MS so that's probably why.

pretty sure you can buy USB external HDDs as well. Although i hope they support usb 3.0 since you'll want a fast transfer speed when playing downloaded retail games. external usb drives are pretty cheap (you can buy a 2TB one for the same price as those marked up 360 harddrives) and they'll only get cheaper as time goes on. Hell, maybe by the end of the generation you'll be able to buy external solid state drives without paying an arm and a leg.

I expect Sony and MS to support USB 3.0 so Wii U should have it. However, more than feature parity, it would be nice to have in Wii U considering we probably won't see a successor until 2017-2019. When you look at it that way, USB 3.0 support makes a lot more sense. And unfortunately, this isn't one of those things 3rd parties are likely lighting up Nintendo's phones to include so this is probably the thing that suffers from Nintendo's trademark lack of foresight.

Though you are forgetting Nintendo war against load times in general.  I think we will get USB 3.0 if you can only hook an external harddrive to the Wii U.  If it has a spot for an internal one then I think it will probably be no dice.  Though I sort of rather have eSata.

Either eSata or USB 3.0 would be ideal, or even Thunderbolt would be fine (though that is less supported).  If they do have a slot for an internal HDD, I hope they use Sata 3.0 so it's 6GB/s download speed.  SSDs make load times nearly non-existent, especially on Sata 3.0.

I keep waiting for SSD prices to drop but they really haven't.

I can't speak on GTAV, but CoD will be on all available systems this fall/winter.
from iPhone to 3DS/Vita to Wii to PS360 to Wii U & PC

GTAV was part of the original rumors coming from 01.net, so I'm sure we will see it come to light at E3 as just about everything else they were talking about came true.
I know you're pretty reliable, but do you know CoD 3DS and Wii U for sure, or are you just speculating based on their prior platform choices?

In other words, has a source clued you in on this?

SSD prices have dropped dramatically from even a year ago, but they aren't coming down fast enough for the mainstream.  I don't have one yet either.  Of course, I still haven't built my dream machine either.  Until I do that, I won't need an SSD. :) (unless I found one for a great price and could put it in a WiiU.)

I think we might have to put the odds of Nintendo using USB 3.0 pretty low. They're known for their. . .frugality.

Even if they don't at first, they could always add it into a later revision (if they do a revision).

But is it really that costly to toss in a USB 3.0 port or two? I'm sure its a bit more than a USB 2.0 port, but could it really be THAT much more?
is your sanity...

CoD this year is done by Treyarch. They are the BIG supports of Nintendo systems.
And Activision has basically all but confirmed it's coming to Wii U already after the latest reveal.

But to answer your question, it's all speculation, but do you really think they would put the game out near launch of the Wii U and not put the game on the Wii U?

I certainly hope not mainly because I plan to be an early adopter.

The components aren't but Nintendo has to do more than just tossing a couple ports in Wii U. My understanding is Nintendo can either write drivers for the operating system or have the IBM integrate USB 3.0 directly into the chipset. The former is probably the cheaper route. It comes down to whether Nintendo decided USB 2.0 was adequate or had the foresight to decide that USB 2.0 won't be in a year or 2.

You do realize that SD cards tap out around 30MB/s read and 10MB/s write speeds whereas SSDs are now hitting 500+MB/s read and write speeds right?  There is no comparison between the two.  SSDs are clearly superior by a huge margin and the reason why there is a price difference.

Just because something is flash based storage does not make it similar.  That means the ipod is similar since it has flash based storage.  You can run apps from an SD card and store music an movies.  It's obviously similar.

Do you run your Windows/Mac/Linux based PC off of an SD card?  If so, then I will think about agreeing with you.
