Anything that doesn't make the controller sound like a Wii add-on would be welcome, but I don't think we're gonna get a name change anytime soon if at all.

There's a dozen reasons to change the name. I doubt they will.

I think the only way they'll change it is if they see people having real trouble differentiating the 3DS from the DS. If that becomes a significant issue they may change their mind.

I think the Wii name as a brand is more harmful than good. Nintendo should try to distance themselves from that as much as possible. Casuals won't care, and they may even love it, but Hardcore gamers don't have a good opinion of the Wii and may be less likely to take the Wii U seriously or consider buying it. If Nintendo wants to win over the hardcore crowd they should distance the Wii U from the Wii as much as possible to give people the impression its something different.

People already have trouble doing that. And when the Wii U debuted, the media at large thought it was an add-on. They attributed it to not showing the actual system enough during E3, but that was a single tree to the forest of problems. If Nintendo doesn't change the name by the next time they showcase the system, it's gonna be 100% stuck.

Yeah, but I think the blue ocean Nintendo catered to before saw the Wii as a fad. If you ask most people it's the tennis/bowling machine that has the Michael Jackson game (even if that one's on other systems). If they see "Wii U" they'll think it's more of the same.

To me it's the other way around. The hardcore will be informed enough to know the difference and will make their decisions based on what games are there, regardless of the name. More casual players may not understand the difference between the Wii and Wii U.

The thing about the Wii name is that it isn't like the hardcore gamers don't know Nintendo makes it. Right now hardcore gamers don't have a good opinion of Nintendo in general, so simply changing the name of the system isn't going to matter.  What will matter is the only thing that should matter: games. If the Wii U has games the hardcore want to play, they'll buy one. Even if they do so online, so they can avoid telling a store clerk that they want a Wii U, not a siren.

I was joking about iNintendo but now that I think of it, iNintendo still sounds leagues better than Wii U. I liked "Nintendo Stream" though "Nintendo 6" is just boring and neutral enough to get people stop caring about the name so, yeah, they should pick that one.

If ever there were a name Nintendo should bring back, it's the Nintendo Entertainment System. They had a good thing going by omitting the word "videogame," and since the Wii U will undoubtedly do more than play games, it makes even more sense now.

iNES would be cool.

Or how about iNXS? Just like the band by that name, except it would stand for something Nintendoey like "Incredible Nintendo Xtreme System"

To briefly move away from this console naming talk, here's a rumour about the fate of Level 5's most anticipated 3DS game in the West.

http://www.gamesradar.com/tgs-2011-professor-layton-vs-ace-attorney-confirmed-release-outside-japan/

GamesRadar claim to have received a press release in English for Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney that led them to believe that it may come out in Western markets after all. For one, it was the first time they had ever seen it called by this title, as opposed to its Japanese title of Layton-kyoju VS Gyakuten Saiban. Plus, it referred to characters in the game by their Japanese names and apparently included a parenthesis saying 'English Names TBD'.

Possible leak? I'm just going to say yes this is real. Even if it's not the game is still going to start production soon, so who cares? It's fun to get excited!

The name sounds like something Nintendo would do. It's how they will brand all their big Wii U multiplayer games. They will justify the U with Universe at the end of every title just wait and see.

But I was looking forward to Super Smash Bros. Squabble or SSB Skirmish

But I was really hoping for a Super Mario Universe, so if they are gonna pull the whole Super/64/Wii naming scheme again, Universe is a good way to go.
