Thankfully, Nobunaga is NOT hot in these ones.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/70346/super-nintendo-library-adding-four-koei-strategy-games-march-28

Four different Koei strategy games from the 16-bit era are being added to the Super Nintendo library on March 28, according to a video just released by Nintendo.

  • Nobunaga's Ambition and its sequel, Nobunaga's Ambition: Lord of Darkness (respectively 1993 and 1994) are turn-based strategy games set in 16th and 17th century Japan. The original has four distinct scenarios while the sequel involves unifying the entire nation through both military strategy and governance of the peasantry.
  • Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire (1994) is a similar strategy game set in 2nd and 3rd century China, with six different scenarios playable.
  • Uncharted Waters: New Horizons (1994) sees the player take the role of a Portuguese noble in the early 16th century who must expand his home nation's sphere of influence in the Age of Sail.

TalkBack / Trio Of Puzzle Games Added To Nintendo Music Library

The complete history of the Soviet Union (as set to Type A from Tetris GB)

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/70338/trio-of-puzzle-games-added-to-nintendo-music-library

Nintendo Music has picked up three puzzle games in this week's update.

The NES versions of Tetris and Dr. Mario, as well as the Game Boy version of Tetris, have all been added to the application tonight. The GB Tetris does allow the classic "Type A" music to be extended, as well as having an "early version" music for Type A that was only in the first run of the game's Japanese release.

Tetris GB has 12 tracks, the NES version 6, and Dr. Mario has 7 tracks.

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - March 20, 2025

A week that I've been waiting for since December 3, 2015.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/70308/nintendo-downloads-march-20-2025

Things we missed last week: Early Konami shooter Juno First (not to be confused with the Academy Award-winning Elliot Page vehicle) in the Archives.

Nine years, three months, and 15 days ago I did the Downloads for the release of Xenoblade Chronicles X (a few days after I reviewed it) and now we're going to run it back on a system people actually own. And I'm going to slowplay this one, so if I'm going to review it we're probably looking at Easter because it's gonna take that long. Still, we're going to all disappear for several weeks on Thursday. Deal with it.

Among the poor bastards competing with Xenoblade Chronicles X this week are fellow RPGs MLB The Show 25 (non-early access edition) and Atelier Yumia (Allyson has a review in progress), or the scrolling shooter Assault Suit Leynos 2. Also, this week's EggConsole game - Gulkave - is a shooter, so it should be relatively playable.

The team is staying intact, so let's hope for a lot of brakes being thrown.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/70281/pokemon-go-pikmin-bloom-development-teams-acquired-by-mobile-publisher-scopely

One of Nintendo and The Pokemon Company's major partners has been acquired.

As was originally rumored last month, Niantic has sold their gaming division to Scopely, publishers of Monopoly Go and owners of Marvel Strike Force. Financial terms were not made public but the rumored acquisition price was US$3.5b.

The division that handles Pokemon Go is remaining intact, according to the announcement by Pokemon Go team lead Ed Wu. Niantic and The Pokemon Company announced the mobile "real world" collecting game in 2015 and launched it as a worldwide phenomenon a year later, while in 2021 Niantic also partnered with Nintendo for Pikmin Bloom - a similar real world exploration game.

Scopely is an American-based company that was acquired by the Saudi Arabia-backed Savvy Games Group - also one of Nintendo's largest external shareholders - in 2023.

Is this the eShop throwing for Mar10? Seriously?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/70277/nintendo-downloads-march-13-2025

Things we missed last week: Vs Mystery Tower (the arcade version of Famicom import Mystery Tower) in the Archives.

Today marks a full decade since I a) moved into my current apartment and b) accepted the offer from Neal to start writing for NWR, so what would this week have? A Chrono Trigger re-release? The preload for Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition... oh wait, that's on Thursday. A special version of MLB 2025 where the Toronto Blue Jays play like the 1927 Yankees... well, the early access edition for that drops on Friday, but the Jays are sadly NOT cracked in it. So what do we get?

A sea of nothing that interests me, aside from the new adventure game On Your Tail but that's only listed in Europe so I don't even know if it's coming out, and a bunch of comic apps in Japan. Maybe Fate: Reawakened will trigger something for those of you still pining for Silksong.

One of those is a true "what took you so long" moment.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/70205/gb-donkey-kong-marios-picross-added-to-switch-online-game-boy-list

Nintendo has resolved an item from our list of requested Switch 2 re-releases even before the Switch 2 Direct.

The Game Boy library has added a pair of Mario themed games ahead of this Monday's MAR10 celebrations in the Game Boy Donkey Kong (1994) and Mario's Picross. Colloquially known as "Donkey Kong '94", the former was a spotlight game for the Super Game Boy in its initial release and adds nearly a hundred levels to the classic Donkey Kong gameplay. Mario's Picross (1995) was the first Picross game to be published by Nintendo in North America, and has 256 basic nonogram puzzles.

Other elements of the MAR10 celebrations include sales on Mario games both in stores and on the eShop, including 75% off Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope.

TalkBack / Pokemon Go Announces Next Global Event Details
« on: March 06, 2025, 08:00:00 AM »

Your humble news editor is currently kicking a vacation week in June back a bit.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/70204/pokemon-go-announces-next-global-event-details

After some Unovan chill, the next major weekend for Pokemon Go will be around the start of summer.

The annual Pokemon Go Fest has been announced for the month of June, with in person events in Osaka, Japan May 29 - June 1, Jersey City, NJ on June 6 - 8, and Paris, France on June 13 - 15 before a global event on June 28 and 29. Tickets for the in person events are now available, as well as a US$15 ticket for the global event that will unlock exclusive gameplay including an encounter with the mythical Pokemon Volcanion, while the main Pokemon available to all will be the "crowned" forms of Sword and Shield mascots Zacian and Zamazenta.

Purchasing the global ticket by April 15, and logging into the game between April 8 - 15, will unlock a research story which includes an encounter with Skiddo, a Pokemon previously only made available at "City Safari" in person events that have only been held in select cities since late 2023.

Neal's Wish has come true, so buy it If You Must (though not quite Here and Now).

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/70201/tony-hawks-pro-skater-3-and-4-to-receive-remaster-on-switch-july-11

The Birdman is coming back to Nintendo consoles this summer.

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 have been revealed after several months of teasing, and will be available on July 11. The port will be developed by Iron Galaxy due to the folding of Vicarious Visions (who developed 1+2), and three editions will be available: a standard edition for $49.99 US, a "Digital Deluxe" edition for $69.99 that adds the DOOM Slayer and The Revenant from DOOM as playable characters and more songs to the soundtrack, and a US$129.99 physical edition that includes a skate deck.

The Switch box art has a note of a download required for the game, though the size is to be determined.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/70199/nintendo-downloads-march-6-2025

Things we missed last week: Taito's Dead Connection in the Archives.

We've got another classic set headlining this week as the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster collection from Konami leads a busy week all around. More people played the first, but the 2nd has reportedly one of the biggest villains this side of Florida, so either way you should be in for some heavy RPG action. The other major item this week is Despera Drops published by Aksys.

Other things to watch for: The Carmen Sandiego game (in which you play AS the thief), a pair of classic novels in Never 7 and Ever 17 aka the early works of Kotaro Uchikoshi, and a long awaited RPG in the interesting Everhood 2 (more on that in a bit). And "Sorry We're Closed" is an interesting horror shooter.

TalkBack / Other Announcements From The Pokemon Presents
« on: February 27, 2025, 04:50:50 AM »

Pokemon Sleep is about to mess with the final boss, it seems.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/70096/other-announcements-from-the-pokemon-presents

Among the other announcements from the Pokemon Presents:

  • Pokemon Scarlet and Violet will be holding mass outbreak events for Pokemon themed around the colors red, blue and green starting today, alongside Tera Raid battles against evolved Scarlet and Violet starters. Raid events will also be held for the "psuedo-legendary" or "600 Club" Pokemon in the future.
  • Pokemon TCG Pocket will debut a new mini-set called "Triumphant Light" tomorrow with Arceus as the featured Pokemon, and will be adding ranked battles in March.
  • In addition to plugging the global Unova Tour event in Pokemon Go, the next season beginning Tuesday, March 4 was revealed to be called "Might and Mastery", with Kubfu and Urshifu being added to the game. A bonus research can also be claimed on the Pokemon Go webstore.
  • Pokemon Masters EX will add new alts of Brendan and May (the Ruby / Sapphire and their remakes) protagonists with Primal Kyogre and Groudon soon.
  • New recipes and Pokemon including Flapple and Appletun are being added to Pokemon Cafe Remix over the next few weeks.
  • Pokemon Sleep will be holding a "Darkrai vs Cresselia" event next month that involves encounters with the dream and nightmare-causing Pokemon pair.
  • A new "First to 500" mode will be added to Pokemon Unite alongside a new Suicune Holowear, Alolan Raichu next month, and Alcremie "soon".
  • The Pokemon TCG is reintroducing Mega Evolution for scalpers to fight over later this year, with Lucario and Gardevoir's Mega forms headlining.
  • Beginning with Legends Z-A and Champions, Pokemon games will be localized in Latin American Spanish (previously only European Spanish was offered). The TCG will also be localized in LATAM Spanish.

We've come an awful long way since the days of Tobybro.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/70095/pokemon-champions-now-in-development-to-offer-cross-generation-battling

For the first time in nearly two decades, a dedicated Pokemon battling game is in development.

Game Freak and "The Pokemon Works" have announced Pokemon Champions, a PvP battle simulator that can use existing Pokemon, is now in development. The game will be available for Switch systems, iOS, and Android.

The game features multiple battle styles with the reveal trailer including a Mega Evolution (Legends Z-A or generation VI and VII) and a Terastalized Pokemon (Scarlet and Violet) in battle against each other. Champions will feature compatibility with Pokemon Home on the same platforms and will offer the ability for Pokemon to transfer from at least Pokemon Go and Scarlet/Violet.

TalkBack / Pokemon Legends Z-A Gets Gameplay Reveal, Large Release Window
« on: February 27, 2025, 04:30:03 AM »

It's been 3000 years since we heard about this one.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/70094/pokemon-legends-z-a-gets-gameplay-reveal-large-release-window

For the first time in a year, we have heard official news about Pokemon Legends: Z-A, and this includes gameplay and a release date.

The follow up to Legends: Arceus will launch "later this year", and will take place entirely within the confines of Lumiose with wild Pokemon encountered in "Wild Zones" located in different parts of the city. The starter Pokemon choices will be Chikorita, Tepig, or Totodile: the Gold and Silver starters with Tepig subbing for Cyndaquil who was a starter choice in Arceus.

The ability to capture Pokemon without engaging in battle will return, and trainers will be able to order their Pokemon to dodge attacks directly in battle.

Featuring several classic games IN CANADA.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/70091/nintendo-downloads-february-27-2025

Things we missed last week: An arcade Othello game in the Archives.

While I'm running around the Distortion World and creation for the Unova Tour stuff this weekend, I suspect a lot of you will be getting into one of the two options for retro Konami games which are this week's headliners: the Yu-Gi-Oh Early Days Collection and the standalone Ninja Five-O from the GBA. Whether you want to get royally confused by children's card games or prove that ACAB doesn't apply to ninjas somehow, go nuts.

The other big items this week are in the Rairdin Department; Omega 6 The Triangle Stars has art design from Takaya Imamura (whose credits include Star Fox, hint hint) and a remake of the late 1990s N64 3D platformer Glover.

TalkBack / Annual Pokemon Presents Event To Air February 27
« on: February 20, 2025, 02:55:08 AM »

On the menu: Legends Zut Alors, TCG Pocket, Unova Tour. Not on the docket: Potential deals with pay to win mobile companies.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/70016/annual-pokemon-presents-event-to-air-february-27

With Pokemon Day next Thursday, the Pokemon Company will be celebrating with some new announcements.

A Pokemon Presents will air on Thursday, February 27 (the anniversary of Red and Green's release) at 9 a.m. ET / 6 a.m. PT / 1500 CET. A length has not been disclosed.

This will be a year to the day since the last Pokemon Presents, which ended on the first reveal of Pokemon Legends: Z-A and also revealed Pokemon TCG Pocket; since Z-A was announced for a 2025 release in that video, there was no summer Presents as is normal when a game or expansion is pending that year.

And so ends a streak of never paying actual money for Nintendo Switch Online.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/70015/my-nintendo-gold-points-to-be-discontinued-game-voucher-program-will-not-support-switch-2-games

One of the more popular Switch features is ending just after Xenoblade Chronicles X's re-release, and another will not be forward compatible with Switch 2.

Nintendo has announced tonight that the My Nintendo Gold program will be discontinued starting on March 25 at 12:59 a.m. ET. The program offered 1% of physical 1st party releases during the first year of release in eShop credit when redeemed, and 5% of all eShop purchases automatically. The only exception will be for physical games released between March 25, 2024 and the end date until their year expires, which would include games from Endless Ocean: Luminous through Xenoblade Chronicles X Definitive Edition. Pokemon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond would not qualify.

Additionally, the support page for Switch Online Vouchers has been updated to confirm that the program will not work on Switch 2 games. Nintendo Switch Onlinr subscribers could purchase pairs of vouchers for $99 US or equivalent and could cash the vouchers in for first party releases. The vouchers will remain an option for future releases on the original Switch, including Legends Z-A and Prime 4.

Things we missed last week: The localized release of three Cosmic Fantasy RPGs, a game named Ultros which does NOT have seafood soup on the menu, and Konami's Kitten Kaboodle (not to be confused with the drag performer from Canada) in the Archives.

As you know, the URL for each page on the website has been counting eternally upwards, and during the process of setting up this article we had page 70000 created. And though I was hoping it would end up being this week's article, it turned out to be something appropriate instead.

As far as other releases, a game that James has spoken of a few times - the "PC-8801 ass adventure game" Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog - is the headliner in a light week for quality, it would seem, with runner up slots going to the crossover of off-brand Picross and farm RPGs in Piczle Cross: Rune Factory and... oh dear lord, Kairosoft takes a podium slot with Pro Wrestling Story. Also, the EggConsole game this week is a RPG called Burai: Jokan which is strongly recommended to avoid unless you can read Japanese.

Once again, it's nice to see that every other console maker's events can be tax deductible.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/69953/new-shinobi-and-take-on-warriors-headline-sony-state-of-play-switch-announcements

Sony held their first State of Play presentation of the year earlier today but the Switch still got some new releases out of it.

  • The Warriors franchise is going even further into procedural generation with the announcement of Warriors: Abyss, which will be available on Switch tomorrow. Abyss will be the first roguelike game in the history of the long-running genre, but will include the traditional Warriors action.
  • It's Sonic's 30th anniversary, and we have new details about Sonic Racing CrossWorlds: the "CrossWorlds" in the title are special areas found by driving into rings that are different than the normal track AND spit the racer out into a completely different track setup once completed. Although no release date was given, a network test will open signups next Friday (which is PlayStation exclusive), and instructions for the game are already online.
  • Dave the Diver continues its quest to become the nexus of third party game development with a new DLC called "Ichiban's Holiday" that crosses the game over with the Like a Dragon games. The DLC will be available in April.
  • After being revealed in April, the remastered Onimusha 2 was given a May 21 launch date.
  • 2025 appears to be the year of the ninja revival as Sega has renewed their partnership with Streets of Rage developer Lizardcube for Shinobi: Art of Vengeance which will be available on August 29 - the first appearance of the Shinobi series since the 3DS.
  • Konami has hooked up with French independent studio ZeDrimeTim for Darwin's Paradox, a platformer starring an octopus that will launch sometime this year.

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - February 13, 2025
« on: February 10, 2025, 03:00:00 AM »

Gaming's most infamous underflow error is back for another go-around.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/69895/nintendo-downloads-february-13-2025

Things we missed this week: Namco's 1998 isometric action game Marchen Maze was the Archives release.

On paper, this is a two game week: either Civilization VII with the most aggressive Mahatma Gandhi this side of Gandhi II or the latest game in the rapidly spiraling out of control Trails series. However, the relative underperformance of Trails (as seen in Jordan's review) means there's a steel chair coming from the indie ranks. Although Allison makes a compelling case for Urban Myth Dissolution Center I'm going to give a shoutout to Afterlove EP, the Indonesian-set rhythm / adventure game that got announced in an Indie World show back in 2021.

Other items to watch for include the Switch version of beloved 2024 PC title Tiny Terry's Turbo Trip, the Switch version of Undying published by the studio whose head ISN'T looking at a year in the clink for flying a drone into a water bomber that was to be used to help with the Los Angeles wildfires, and Playism publishing the very Russian-sounding RPG Snezhinka.

Also babe, wake up: new Neptunia game is dropping in Japan and based on the last round of games in that franchise, in Japan ONLY. Which is a shame, as it's a strategy RPG with quite the pedigree as explained by Tony Schiavone.

From a rare time in which Wario did platforming.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/69892/game-boy-advance-expansion-pack-library-to-add-wario-land-4-next-week

The Expansion Pack is going from one meme to another next week.

The Game Boy Advance library will add Wario Land 4 (2001) next week; officially the launch will be February 14, but North America will get the game on the night of the 13th.

Wario Land 4 previously was rereleased on the Wii U Virtual Console and was one of the GBA games given in the 3DS's Ambassador Program.

TalkBack / Demo Available For Donkey Kong Country Returns HD
« on: February 05, 2025, 03:57:04 PM »

If you're still on the fence, check out if the port's worth it.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/69889/demo-available-for-donkey-kong-country-returns-hd

Nintendo's first 2025 release can now be tried to see if it's worth the voucher.

A demo has been added to the eShop for Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. The January 16 remake release joins the likes of Metroid Dread and the Pokemon Let's Go games as receiving demos post-launch, rather than pre-launch.

TalkBack / Nintendo Confirms Timing For Switch 2 Direct
« on: February 05, 2025, 04:28:48 AM »

We're not going into a RFN recording straight after - right, James?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/69888/nintendo-confirms-timing-for-switch-2-direct

There is nowhere where the Switch 2 Direct could be considered an April Fool's joke.

Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2 Direct on April 2nd will air at 9 a.m. Eastern, 6 a.m. Pacific, 3 p.m. Central European time, and 11:00 Japan Standard Time. A total time was not provided.

For comparison, the comparable Switch event - the last live Nintendo press event - was held at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan at 11 p.m. ET.

It all depends on your skill - face it straight!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/69886/capcom-showcase-reveals-onimusha-2-remaster-capcom-fighting-collection-2-release-date

Capcom held a stream event earlier today which included a couple of announcements for the Switch.

Capcom Fighting Collection 2 - originally announced in last August's Partner Showcase for Switch release in "2025" - received a confirmed date of May 16. The second collection includes a pair of Capcom vs SNK titles, the Power Stone duology, and Street Fighter Alpha 3 Upper among its included games.

The other announcement was a remaster of Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny. The action title originally released on the PlayStation 2 in 20002 was confirmed for launch in 2025, but no further details were provided.

It's never good to have to revise estimates down after the holiday quarter, but what did you expect?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/69879/nintendo-releases-financial-results-for-third-quarter-of-2024-25-fiscal-year

Nintendo issued their financial results for the 4th calendar quarter of 2024 at the close of business in Japan today, and what would be a high mark for any other quarter is deflated by the fact that it was the Switch's eighth holiday quarter.

All figures quoted in yen (¥), for comparison the US$ figures are listed based on a rate of ¥155.32 = $1.

Hardware Shipments

4.82m Switch systems were shipped in the quarter, broken down to 2.62m OLED, 1.52m standard, and 780k Lites. The Switch has broken through the 150m units shipped barrier and seems likely to pass the DS at some point in calendar 2025 as it needs another 3.16m systems shipped, with another 9.24m shipments needed to surpass the PlayStation 2 (following updated results issued by Sony late in 2024*).

New Software

Super Mario Party Jamboree was the top seller of the quarter with shipments of 6.17m units; the game is selling faster than both 2018's Super Mario Party and 2021's Mario Party Superstars. The other worldwide release published by Nintendo, Mario & Luigi: Brothership, has shipped over 1.84m copies.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom (September 26) has also jumped to 3.91m copies shipped.

Catalogue Sales

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has widened its lead in the Switch software race with 3.06m units shipped in the quarter (including bundles) for a new lifetime total of 67.35m copies. The rest of the top 10 can be found here: the order has not changed, but it appears that Pokemon Scarlet/Violet will swap places with Sword/Shield at some point in the next few quarters.

Other Announcements

For the second time this fiscal year, Nintendo has had to revise estimates downwards. For hardware and software the new predicted figures are 11m system shipped (from 12.5) and 150m units of software (previously 160m). Revenue was also lowered by 7%, operating profit by 22.2%, ordinary profit 11.9%, and net profit by 10%.

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - February 6, 2025
« on: February 03, 2025, 03:00:00 AM »

The only thing more painful than recording this week of releases is streaming an impossible game for 306 days and getting screwed by an undocumented bug at the finish.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/69843/nintendo-downloads-february-6-2025

Things we missed last week: Man's ultimate weapon dodged the tariffs and came to North America after hitting Japan then Europe, and Taito's Thunder Fox was the obligatory Archives launch.

This week is a light one, and hopefully it remains as such - but with a results call when I wake up tomorrow (at 3 in the effing morning) it does maybe possibly open up a Festivus, so we'll see. The biggest release of the motley crew is Momodora: Moonlit Farewell, a sequel to the last game from 2019. Apart from that it's a rare Macross localization and a couple of retro oddities in the EggConsole's latest semi-playable adventure game in Carmine 88, and a dice-based action RPG (!) developed by Technos Japan (!!!!) and published by the mini Archives specialists at Ratalaika (!!) being localized for the first time. Or you can say screw you to capitalism (a noble pursuit) with the banned-in-several-countries-and-probably-coping-an-18-in-Europe Luck Be A Landlord.

TalkBack / N64 Expansion Pack Adds Ridge Racer 64 For January Update
« on: January 30, 2025, 03:24:31 PM »

Editor's note: We have deleted the references to giant enemy crabs and $600 systems for your sanity.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/69825/n64-expansion-pack-adds-ridge-racer-64-for-january-update

The N64 library in the Expansion Pack has offered a very PlayStation-oriented update tonight.

Ridge Racer 64 is now available in the N64 library. Originally released in 2000 and never released in Japan, the arcade racer was actually a Nintendo-internal product developed under license from Namco, with the development led by Nintendo Software Technologies.

RR64 was also used as the basis for the DS launch window title Ridge Racer DS.
