REVIEW: The Starship Damrey Review

A game filled with frustrating mechanics and hilarious robots.

Starship Damrey, the first release in the Guild 02 collection, continues the compilation's pension for short, unique games. Upon starting up Starship Damrey, you find yourself in Cold Sleep (a sleep capsule designed for long-term space missions), and you have to reboot the computer system through a short series of mini-games to get things operational. Then you're simply thrown into the thick of it with no explanations or tutorials. The game actually states during the introductory sequence that it is meant to be explored.

INTERVIEW: Interview with Orion's Odyssey Developer Island Officials

Co-founder Ryan Morrison talks about their soon-to-end Kickstarter, working with Nintendo, and his company's secret love for the retro classic Elevator Action.

Orion's Odyssey is an apt title for the latest title from independent developers Island Officials. The game took them two-and-a-half years to finish, and they spent an additional year looking for a publisher. Orion's Odyssey was originally meant to be a retail DS game, but due to the changing market the developer chose to release the game using crowdfunding through Kickstarter.

Their initial campaign for a traditional cartridge release fell short, but the game makers picked themselves up off the ground and started a new campaign, this time for a digital DSiWare and eShop release instead of a physical one.

ROUNDTABLE: Nostalgia and Launch Windows

Was software support actually worse in the past with the N64 and GC?

Continued from "The Wii U and Objectivity"

Jonathan
Metts

[In response to an
earlier argument Carmine made claiming the N64 was in a worse software
position compared to the Wii U]

I
hope your comparison to N64 is a joke. That system launched with Super
Mario 64 and had Wave Race 64, Pilotwings 64, and Mario Kart 64 by this
point, with Goldeneye 007 and Star Fox 64 coming in the first summer.
That lineup dumps diarrhea over what we currently have on Wii
U.

Call of Duty: Ghosts has been listed as coming to the Wii U on November 5 by Polygon and GameTrailers.

Though not officially confirmed by Activision, last year's Call of Duty title, Black Ops 2, was released on the Wii U.

Call of Duty: Ghosts is being developed Infinity Ward and follows a small group of elite soldiers, called Ghosts, after a large scale attack cripples the United States in the near future.

NEWS: EA: We Are Building Titles for Wii U

EA is not neglecting Nintendo's console after all.

Electronic Arts has confirmed that it does actually have Wii U games in development, correcting earlier statements that the publisher was not supporting the system.

At the recent Stifel Nicolaus Internet, Media and Communications conference, Blake Jorgensen, the chief financial officer of EA, said that the publishing giant would, in fact, be bringing new software to Wii U in the future, "but not anywhere near as many as [they] are for PS or Xbox".

It is unknown at this time exactly what these games are, though it was previously confirmed that neither FIFA 14 nor Madden 25 will be released on Nintendo platforms.

NEWS: Iwata Asks: Game & Wario Originally Meant to Be Pre-installed on Wii U

Game & Wario was originally meant to be pre-installed on Wii U, but was bumped to a retail release after the game had 'too many ideas'

In another edition of Iwata Asks, our favorite Nintendo CEO sits down with Naoko Mori, Goro Abe, and Yoshio Sakamoto to discuss the upcoming Game & Wario. During the interview it's revealed that Game & Wario was originally going to be pre-installed on the Wii U, but they felt the game quickly outgrew what would be appropriate for a pack-in.

They also stated that it was decided not to make the game part of the WarioWare series because it wasn't in line with the "distinctive graphical style," of previous WarioWare titles. They went on to discuss many specifics about the individual games, such as the twenty-two microgames featured in 'GAMER' and a mode called 'Miiverse Artwork' in which players are asked to choose one of four random subjects to draw a picture of, then after a one minute time limit it is automatically uploaded to the Miiverse community. Also mentioned were the 240 prizes obtainable via in-game tokens.

Simultaneous multiplayer through local play can also be utilized if gamers have two copies of the game. 3D Altered Beast is based on the Mega Drive (Genesis) version of the game.

ROUNDTABLE: The NWR Staff Chimes in on the Xbox One

Microsoft revealed their next system, and some staffers talked about their thoughts on it.

Regardless of what the masthead on this site reads, almost every staff member at Nintendo World Report still pays attention to Microsoft and Sony. As such, we all chatted about what we thought of Microsoft's Xbox One reveal. You are more than welcome to share your thoughts below as well. We didn't include the semantic discussion of how Call of Duty and Mario games are all the same to certain people. Be thankful for that. Or the discussion over how Alex thinks that the master race of console owners doesn't include an Xbox 360. I don't know; it got weird.

REVIEW MINI: Super Metroid Review Mini

Samus' most influential game rolls onto Wii U.

What can I say about this game without degenerating into fanatical drivel praising Super Metroid as one of the best games ever made? How does the game fare by today's often jaded and cynical stance on the industry? Has Samus' Power Suit rusted over time? Read on!

If you haven't played this or any other Metroid game before, the experience can be a little daunting at first. A brief recap of the last two games is all the introduction you'll get before you're dropped right into the action. There is nobody to talk to, nobody to give you directions, and no on-screen tutorial on how to shoot or jump or open doors. Samus is alone on this hostile alien world; isolated from all human communication, and it's up to you as the player to experiment and see what works in which situations. To me, this is a prime example of perfect difficulty in a game: it won't hold your hand the entire way, but it encourages exploration and experimentation and rewards you all the more richly for doing so. You're not forced to follow a set path or collect every item, but the more you put in to looking around and figuring things out for yourself, the more you'll get out of it. Each new item has its uses in both battle and exploration, and it is this style of creatively sealing off paths until you have the right equipment to proceed that set the standard for both this series and copycats alike. I especially love how this game takes place on Planet Zebes, the location of the original Metroid on the NES. In the first half of the game you will come across many areas that Samus previously traipsed through, even the ruined remains of Mother Brain's original hideout! It's this continuity and attention to detail that gives this game such unmatched atmosphere and life.

REVIEW MINI: Mega Man 5 Review Mini

The one that's severely underappreciated.

One of the most fun aspects of playing all these NES Mega Man games back to back is that you can see how the series has (and hasn’t) changed through its beloved tenure on the system. From Mega Man 1 to Mega Man 4, a clear pattern of improvement exists, but I would argue that it’s Mega Man 5 that takes all the lessons and puts a bow on them. Mega Man 5 came out in 1992 and is probably one of the most technologically impressive NES games. My thoughts on its predecessors fresh in my mind, I came to appreciate Mega Man 5 far more than I thought I would.

ROUNDTABLE: Roundtable Discussion: Reactions to the May 17 Nintendo Direct

When the NWR staff set out to create this feature, they had no idea just how far the discussion would take them.

When NWR Site Director Neal Ronaghan asked staff to chime
in on last week's Nintendo Direct, he never expected the frenzied
back-and-forth that would follow. Nintendo fans are commonly believed to
have very strong feelings about the company and its games and that
passion definitely seemed to play out last Friday amongst the Nintendo
World Report staff. Though the discussion started on topic, it quickly
became inflamed with themes of negativity vs. optimism, objectivity,
nostalgia, the N64, launch windows, the Nintendo Direct format, timing,
new IPs, and finally Metroid.

NEWS: Wii U Firmware Version 3.0.1 U Now Available

Fire up your Wii U and start downloading another update.

Nintendo has made a new firmware update available to Wii U owners today. This follows last month's major Wii U firmware update, which had added a slew of noticeable upgrades to the system's performance and capabilities.

Nintendo claims that this latest update provides "further improvements to overall system stability and software compatibility." This description, while not very specific, could mean that Nintendo is working on improving the Wii U in small ways even between major updates.

NEWS: Shantae Coming to the eShop June 20

WayForward brings the beloved half-genie to new regions.

WayForward has confirmed through their official blog that Shantae is coming to the Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console on June 20. In anticipation of the release, new box art has also been revealed for the game.

Unlike the original Shantae released for the Game Boy Color, which only released in North America, players in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand will also have the chance to download the critically acclaimed game.

Shantae and the Pirates Curse for the 3DS eShop, the third game in Shantae’s series, still lacks an official release date, but is expected later this year. Previously, WayForward had released Shantae: Risky’s Revenge for the Nintendo DSi in 2010, which was well received.

REVIEW MINI: Super Mario Bros. 2 Review Mini

An oft-ridiculed sequel that deserves your praise.

Can I tell you a secret? I’m terrible at video games. Super Mario Bros. 2 used to punish me for hours until I would eventually throw down my controller in frustration. I’ve gotten older, but not much better. Luckily, Nintendo has my back with the save state functionality of the Wii U Virtual Console. I was finally able to traverse the vegetable-riddled land of Subcon and put an end to Wart’s evil schemes.

Even though some people refer to Super Mario Bros. 2 as “not a real Mario game,” because of its strange origins, it’s still pure frantic platforming and puzzle-solving fun from beginning to end. Instead of stomping Goombas, you find yourself pulling up various vegetation and hurling them at your opponents. This throw mechanic adds new depth to the platforming formula, and allows for some great puzzles as well as some hilarious experimentation. Getting used to the details of throwing takes some time due to some finicky trajectory, but with practice, you can adeptly fling turnips with ease.

NEWS: First Batman: Arkham Origins Trailer Shows Deathstroke and Black Mask

Deathstroke confirmed as playable character, but will he be available on the Wii U version?

The first trailer for Batman: Arkham Origins shows Batman busting some crooks before he encounters Deathstroke for a battle in a storage facility. After the battle is over, Black Mask makes an appearance telling Deathstroke that he's "not the only assassin in town." A wounded Batman is then seemingly bludgeoned by Black Mask. The trailer ends with Batman standing on a bridge.

The villain Deathstroke will be a playable character, courtesy of a pre-order bonus that is currently only confirmed for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC. The status of the DLC for the Wii U version is unconfirmed. We have reached out to Warner Bros. for comment.

NEWS: Wario Launches Crowdfarter Campaign

Nintendo's anti-hero Wario launches his Game & Wario cashgrab site.

Nintendo has launched a marketing campaign for Game & Wario called Crowdfarter in an amusing parody of this generation's developers turning to social donation networks such as Crowdfunder and Kickstarter.

The "campaign", spearheaded by Wario himself, aims to gather "100 katrillion coins" in order to finance Wario's dream of, well, being rich. Readers are encouraged to "donate" to the cause by liking the page on Facebook or posting comments via Twitter. Incentives for doing so come in the way of some downloadable goodies, new trailers for the game and a digital badge that proudly proclaims "I crowdfarted!".

Notion Games' Super Ubi Land is now Super Ubie Land as requested by Ubisoft.

Notion Games’ platforming title, Super Ubi Land has been renamed Super Ubie Land.

Notion Games made the decision to alter the Kickstarter funded title’s name after they received a request from Ubisoft to change it due its similarity to Ubisoft’s own name. According to Notion Games’ Twitter, the decision was met without animosity on either side, saying, “Ubisoft has been a great help!”

Super Ubie Land is slated for release on Wii U, PC, Mac, and Linux devices. A demo is currently available for the PC, Mac, and Linux versions. A release date has yet to be announced.

Ubisoft believes in the Wii U. Do you?

Ubisoft said it plans to continue supporting the Wii U when asked if it will rethink its backing of the platform.

When approached by GameIndustry International on the topic of their support of the Wii U, the response received remained positive: "As with any new console, it takes some time to grow an established base. Ubisoft has a varied and high-quality line-up for Wii U, with more big titles on the way including Rayman Legends, Watch Dogs, Assassin's Creed IV Black Flag and Splinter Cell Blacklist." When it comes to their role on the Wii U: "We're confident that this will help in continuing to attract gamers to the Wii U system and that Nintendo will take steps to ensure that the Wii U is successful in the market."

The PC version was released last August, so improvements to that are most likely what is being worked on.

At E3 2012, senior vice president of sales Tony Key told IGN the Wii U version was taking "a little bit longer" in order to make sure it was done right.

Denis Dyack, CCO of Shadows of the Eternals' developer Precursor Games, spoke at length about the allegations towards himself and his former company, Silicon Knights, in a video.

The allegations, coming chiefly from a Kotaku article, focused on Silicon Knights' diverting funds from X-Men Destiny, which was published by Activision, to use on an Eternal Darkness 2 demo, among other issues. Dyack stated in the video that the claims were based on a variety of anonymous sources, and that he believed that any readers and members of the press would seek to confirm the reports. Numerous outlets rejected the story initially, according to Dyack, including Wired Game|Life. Watch the video below for the full details. Nintendo World Report will have a staff roundtable discussion posted soon with our reactions to it.

EDITORIAL: A Potential Implication of Sega Direct with Nagoshi

With Yakuza 1 & 2 HD hitting Wii U in Japan, could the rest of the franchise follow?

The beginning of the Japanese Nintendo Direct on May 17 was quite a surprise. It began with the good old “Seeeeegaaaaaaa” voice as it started out unexpectedly labeled as “Sega Direct,” with the special guest Toshihiro Nagoshi, a Sega CCO. Nagoshi may be best known as the producer of the Super Monkey Ball series, but in Japan he has been the icon and the producer of the Yakuza franchise (Note that real Yakuza executives don’t dress themselves like him; rather they always wear dark suits like Iwata, or a better example may be Yamauchi, nicknamed “Kumicho” (Yakuza Boss) by Japanese gamers). On top of a few other Sega titles, what occupied the majority of the “Sega Direct” segment was Yakuza 1 & 2 HD for Wii U. They showed a new trailer and did a short “Iwata Asks” style interview for several minutes.

RUMOR: Rumor: Deadpool Coming to the Wii U

The Merc with a Mouth shows up on Amazon Canada.

Amazon Canada has listed the upcoming Deadpool game on their website as a Wii U release. Officially, the game has only been announced for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but this listing might lead to a surprise announcement of a Wii U version.

Activision is currently offering pre-orders for Deadpool on the game’s official site for the other consoles with a release date slated for June 25. Interestingly, the Amazon Canada webpage lists the Wii U’s release as December 31, making a late announced Wii U release seem more likely, as this gives time to finish development for the console. The page offers no other information besides two videos, the ESRB mature rating, and a product number.

RADIO FREE NINTENDO: Episode 338: Turning Things Around

B.B. Action drops in to help answer a few emails.

This week's show gets an unusual start, as Billy jumps in for the first half-hour or so, Gui shows up a bit late due to technical problems, and for no reason in particular, we shuffle the order and do Listener Mail first. The first couple of questions are perfect softballs for Billy's rants on how to enjoy Wii U (Monster Hunter) and the cancellation of Nintendo's E3 press conference (he is opposed). The rest of the gang is also quite verbose on these topics, describing our current outlook on the console, picking apart recent development news from EA and such, and looking ahead to how Nintendo can make the upcoming convention work for them in a year when most of the general attention will be focused elsewhere. Then Billy has to drop out so he can support the NWR Community Night (next chance to play with him and other NWR peeps is Monday night, May 20), and the rest of us soldier on with another question about the next 3DS revision and some fan mail for James.

IMPRESSIONS: Animal Crossing: New Leaf Impressions

We have our paws on the upcoming version of Animal Crossing!

Upon starting Animal Crossing: New Leaf, I was keeping a keen eye on what felt the same as and what felt different from previous installments of the franchise. Having put dozens of hours into the original Animal Crossing, but fading quickly on every version since, I was looking for something new to keep the experience fresh.

Among the things that were immediately different, the most noticeable was the new tutorial mode. Rather than working off debt from town overlord Tom Nook, you are appointed mayor and have to work with Nook to secure home ownership before you can establish yourself as a resident and begin your mayoral duties. This initial segment of the game is far less guided than the traditional "work for Nook" tutorial of previous games and allows you to proceed at your own pace.

IMPRESSIONS: Resident Evil: Revelations Impressions

Jill Valentine in a catsuit in HD. Need I say more?

Most of you probably bought or played Resident Evil: Revelations when it came out on 3DS a little more than a year ago. I loved it back then and I continue to love it today—it comes out far ahead on my 3DS’ playtime counter (somewhere above 82 hours). When an HD release on consoles was announced, I wasn’t surprised and was even a little excited. Playing Revelations on the big screen would certainly be worthwhile, and staring at Jill Valentine in her HD catsuit is right up my alley. But this is more than just a cash-grabby, glorified port (although it’s that, too): Capcom appears to be throwing a little more effort into this rerelease, and the Wii U version looks to be the best one.

REVIEW: Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D Review

DK and Diddy get shrunken down in this adequate 3DS remake.

Usually when a game is ported to a new platform, the goal is to greatly enhance it and possibly create the definitive version. With Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, that isn’t really how it works. While the added 3D effect and eight additional levels are nice, it doesn’t truly improve on the original in any grand way outside of making it portable and optionally easier. Still, Donkey Kong Country Returns is an excellent game (we said as much when it debuted on Wii), and the 3DS remake is a perfectly adequate way to experience the fine 2D platformer.
