BLOG: Club Nintendo Reward: 18-Game Case

Best. Reward. Ever.

Sometimes I'm hard on the Club Nintendo rewards, but I like to think that in those instances, I'm hard because the rewards deserve it (Handheld History cards, Wii Remote holder). Other rewards are pretty great, like the Kirby patches or last year's Platinum reward. I'd already procured one of Club Nintendo's game cases, and I found it pretty nice but hobbled by lack of a clasp or some other "keep it closed" mechanism. So it sat, unused, in my "gaming stuff" cabinet. Just recently, however, Club Nintendo introduced the 18-game case which can be used for DS and 3DS games. It was so popular it sold out almost immediately. Part of the kicker is that it only costs 250 coins! I got one before they sold out, but now they're back in stock, and I just ordered a second one. You should, too!

NEWS: Nintendo of Europe Explains Kid Icarus AR Cards

These fun facts should explain the basics behind the AR Cards!

Due to the popularity of the Idol Cards in Kid Icarus: Uprising, Nintendo of Europe has detailed the cards, as well as how the mini-games work.

First is the value of the cards themselves. Some cards come with a wing symbol that details just how rare that card is. If a card has a gold, silver or diamond symbol on it, it means the card happens to be truly special. As an example, the Palutena card happens to be one of the rarest cards of the set.

Regarding game rules, Nintendo of Europe explains that there are no rules to follow except the player's own. Players can come up with their own set of rules in order to get the most out of each battle using their own deck of cards.

NEWS: Australian Classification Board Leaks Rabbids Rumble

Only one thing is known about the game—it will have crude humor.

The Australian Classification Board has leaked the existence of a new Rabbids game called Rabbids Rumble.

The listing for the game, however, only confirms that it will have crude humor. It lists Ubisoft as the developer, with no date of release. The game was classified on May 2, 2012.

While the listing doesn't mention a specific system, Ubisoft has pledged support toward the Wii U, proclaiming that they have seven games in the works for the system, many of which we might expect to see at this year's E3 conference.

RADIO FREE NINTENDO: Episode 292: The Show Must Go On!

Bear with us, please. The podcast is going through structural renovations.

Ladies and gentlemen, we present the newest member of the Radio Free Nintendo family: Guillaume Veillette. On his first episode as a regular member and our new official editor, we spend some time getting to know this mysterious fellow with his own alluring accent. But first, New Business! Sadly, James had to miss this week, so you'll have to wait a little longer for the entire crew to form Captain Planet (GameCube). Therefore, Jonny kicks it off with a renewed dalliance with Mario Kart 7, now that the online mode has been patched to be far more bearable. (If you haven't already joined the NWR "Communities", be sure to do that now!) He also adores The Walking Dead's first episodic entry from Telltale Games, who continue to push the point/click adventure way beyond a simple revival. Lindy focuses on a single game, but it's a big deal: Diablo 3. We compare it to the imminent Heroes of Ruin for 3DS and also ponder if this mega-hit from Blizzard would make sense on Wii U. Guillaume closes the segment with a laundry list of games, starting with an old favorite: Link's Awakening DX. He also test out a pair of WiiWare titles recently offered up on Club Nintendo: Intelligent Systems' Eco Shooter: Plant 530 and Skip Ltd.'s Snowpack Park. Which boutique studio will come out on top in this duel of the free games?

PREVIEW: Pokémon Black and White Version 2 Preview

In this month's preview, it's all about more new forms, more new features, and more new analysis.

In our preview for Pokémon Black and White 2 last month, we covered things like the new Kyurem forms, protagonists, and more. This month, we'll provide updates for that information and go over all of the new stuff. A lot of the information from the first preview is still relevant, so you might want to read that first. We'll also run one more preview next month, right before the Japanese launch.

Since we began by talking about new forms last month, we'll start there again. In addition to Kyurem, Tornadus, Thundurus, and Landorus are getting new "Sacred Beast" forms. Tornadus' form carries a special focus on Defense, Special Defense, and Speed; Thundurus has a focus on Special Attack; and Landorus has increased attack. Although there is potential for new signature moves, I have a feeling this will be more of a Deoxys situation, where looks, stats, and a few moves change, but nothing else.

RUMOR: Retro Working on Star Fox + Metroid Crossover Game for Wii U?

Fox and Samus may be colliding in an epic crossover game if rumors are true.

Rumor has it that Retro Studios is working on a Star Fox and Metroid crossover game that incorporates the gameplay mechanics of the two Nintendo franchises, website Paul Gale Network is reporting.

While this is still being seen as a big rumor floating around prior to E3, some details regarding the supposed game have appeared. The story goes that Retro Studios wanted to create a new IP that mixed third person action and intense aerial combat, while other team members wanted to work on a new Star Fox game.

RUMOR: Final Wii U Controller to Use Traditional Analog Sticks?

A tester's Twitter post shows a picture of a Wii U controller with analog sticks.

The Wii U controller may have traditional analog sticks, as opposed to the Circle Pads from the model shown at E3 2011, according to a photo posted by someone claiming to be a QA Tester at TT Games.

The unit also shows the + and - buttons moved to a more reachable position below the A, B, X, and Y buttons, similar to the layout of the DS Lite and DSi, instead of on the sides of the Home button below the screen. An additional unmarked button is located next to the Power button and an unidentified square resides below the D-pad. The headphone jack and stylus slot have been relocated and the controller appears wider overall.

For those unable to get the elusive pink pieces, let me show you my wares!

A couple of weeks ago, I managed to finish the latest couple of puzzles added to the StreetPass Puzzle Swap. A few of you may have finished the Mario Tennis Open one, but even less of you will have seen the Fire Emblem one as it is still currently exclusive to Japan (this will change once the game is released).

As an added bonus, I decided to show the entire collection, just in case any of you haven't seen the older ones yet either. Don't worry, I go from newest to oldest so if you just want to watch the new ones you won't have to wait around long!

NEWS: Color-Based AR Platformer Ideas Revealed in Nintendo Patent Application

Manipulate colored objects in real life to pass obstacles in virtual 3D space.

Several AR platformer ideas are explored by Nintendo in a patent application published today. The ideas revolve around manipulating the color of the real-life environment to produce effects in the virtual 3DS environment.

While Nintendo used background colors to alter the environment in their 3DS AR fishing game, such ideas have yet to be introduced in a platformer. The patent application details different possibilities where a colored book-like object introduced into a scene interacts with virtual objects in a game. Though the examples are simple, it is implied that there would be
various timed levels requiring more thought, sequentially introduced after
reaching each goal.

NEWS: Club Nintendo Inserts Could Be a Thing of the Past

A new system would track fraud and link Club coins to product returns.

Nintendo is considering an alternative registration system for Club Nintendo, which would do away with registration cards, as revealed by a patent application published today.

The registration codes would instead be printed right on the box. The hope is that more people would register their products instead of missing or losing the inserts.

While printing the code on the exterior could lead to fraud, Nintendo envisions a system where all registrations are tracked with purchase information. If an account has several duplicate registrations, the customer's account is flagged and potentially revoked. An example is if a rogue store employee copied and registered serial numbers after selling an item to a customer, but before the customer had a chance to register it.

NEWS: Nintendo Explores Seamless Wii Remote Pointing Between TV and Wii U Tablet

A patent application details a UFO rescue game.

Nintendo is thinking about the ways that the Wii U screen and TV screen can be used simultaneously with the Wii Remote, as revealed by a patent application published today.

Though previous applications mentioned the possibility, this application is the first to explain how it would work. Players must first point at each screen, pressing a button when centered. The attitude of the Wii Remote is recorded at each point so that the game later knows at which screen the Remote is being pointed. The sensor bars can be turned on and off independently to provide more accurate pointing.

NEWS: Nintendo Patents New Circle Pad Design

The design would add a GameCube-like grip pattern to the 3DS control pad.

Nintendo was awarded a design patent for a new 3DS Circle Pad thumb knob design this week.

The knob includes two raised concentric rings, similar to those found on the GameCube controller's thumb stick, which should improve grip. Nintendo has not announced a 3DS redesign, but it is possible that the improvement will appear in such a revision or on the Wii U controller. The included 3DS diagram does not include an oft-requested dual Circle Pad design or any other changes to the system.

Design patent D659765 was filed for on Dec. 6, 2011 and awarded on May 15, 2012. The patent lasts for 14 years. The designers are Yuki Taniguchi and Junichiro Miyataki. A corresponding design was registered in Europe a year earlier on Dec. 10, 2010 along with the current design, so it's possible that this alternative design was discarded.

REVIEW: Shifting World Review

J.P. expresses his shifting opinions on this 3DS puzzle platformer.

Let me get this out of the way first: if you think Shifting World isn’t worthy of a full retail release because of its genre, its look or the fact that it’s an extension of an iPhone game, you’re mistaken. I went into the game with a similar attitude, but found the game justifies its place on a shelf.

Shifting World is a puzzle platformer in which you make your way to a goal through simple manipulation of the game’s world of black and white, a trait used to create numerous positional puzzles. You might start out walking on a black part of the level and reach a dead end, but with a tap of a shoulder button you can flip the world over, allowing you to walk on the white area you were previously standing in and opening up a path to progress further into the level.

NEWS: Rayman Origins 3DS Coming Out on June 5, Possibly as an eShop Release

The game is coming out on the day of Nintendo's press conference, and the press release insinuates it might be hitting the eShop and retail.

Rayman Origins is set for a June 5 release on the 3DS, according to Ubisoft. The game might be coming to both the eShop and retail outlets, though.

Ubisoft's official press release has a curious conclusion: "The full version of the game will be available at retailers and online on June 5, 2012."

The use of online could just mean online retailers, but then again, June 5 is also the same day as Nintendo's E3 press conference, where the company will likely make announcements about the 3DS and the impending full game downloads.

IMPRESSIONS: Rayman Origins Impressions

It's the same great game in nice-looking 3D, but the controls are terrible.

The demo for Rayman Origins hit the 3DS eShop in North America and Europe today, sampling three levels (Swinging Caves, Playing in the Shade, and Shooting Me Softly). The demo, for better or worse, brings good news and bad news for the delayed 3DS game.

The good news: the game still looks very pretty. The aspect ratio is changed, so it is a little different, but the added 3D effect is wonderful, adding a lot of depth to the 2D platformer. It honestly makes me giddy to see how platformers of this ilk that are built for the system (like say, Epic Mickey) will look.

It came out in Japan on March 21, though it was a Game Boy release in that region.

Kirby's Block Ball came out this week on the North American 3DS Virtual Console. Before that, the last release was in March.

Mii

Darksiders II

DiRT

Aliens Colonial Marines

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Online

Metro Last Light

Tekken

Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge (working title)

And Nintendo Mii-based software yet to be confirmed

Amazon's listing did note that these games were "just a few of those players can expect."

PREVIEW: Pokémon Dream Radar Preview

The DS sequels get some needed 3DS functionality.

The software revealed as Pokémon AR Searcher during the Nintendo Direct event last month now goes by Pokémon Dream Radar. Coming out the same day as the Pokémon Black and White 2 in Japan (and around the same time as the release of the sequels in other territories, as well), the game is intended to act as a downloadable companion on the 3DS—something especially interesting considering Black and White 2's release on DS.

Considering the Japanese title, one could correctly assume the game relies on the handheld’s augmented reality capabilities to capture Pokémon, which can then be transferred to either Pokémon Black or White 2. The transfer process itself is entirely contained within one 3DS system, a relief considering the reliance on two DS systems needed to transfer Pokémon between Black/White and Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum versions.

PREVIEW: Pokédex 3D Pro Preview

The eShop launch title is getting a brand new coat of paint.

Pokédex 3D Pro (along with Pokémon Dream Radar) was revealed during the Nintendo Direct event last month as a companion to the upcoming Pokémon Black and White 2. The application, like the original Pokédex 3D, features 3D models of Pokémon with moves lists, evolution charts, and more. However, Pokédex 3D Pro contains data on every single one of the over 650 Pokémon and forms (including those new to Black and White 2).

With all these models, it’s surprising that the developers would have time to include animations for all Pokémon. However, new screenshots (showing an electric discharge from Pikachu and what appears to be an attack coming out of Lucario) seem to point in that direction.

NEWS: Ubisoft Has Seven Wii U Games in the Works

So, we've definitely got Assassin's Creed III, Avengers, Killer Freaks, Rayman Legends, Ghost Recon...

Ubisoft is expecting to release seven Wii U games by the end of March 2013, according to President Yves Guillemot at their annual Earnings Presentation.

The games will consist of two core games and five casual titles. We currently know of eight Ubisoft titles for the system, listed below:

Assassin's Creed III

Killer Freaks from Outer Space

Ghost Recon Online

Avengers: Battle for Earth

Rayman Legends

A new Rabbids title (Rabbids Rumble?)

A sports title

Just Dance

The two core titles are likely Assassin's Creed III and either Killer Freaks or Ghost Recon. It's likely that one of these games is delayed (Killer Freaks?) or one of the tentatively announced ones (the sports title, which was announced at E3 2011) doesn't exist anymore.

It's not shocking, but hey, you'll be dancing with the Wii U Controller or something.

Just Dance is coming to Wii U in the near future, according to Ubisoft's 2012 Earnings Presentation.

The company actually expects Just Dance sales to dip this year, but the hope is that series expansion to Wii U and different geographical areas, such as Ubisoft's work with Nintendo in bringing the series to Wii in Japan, will bring sales back up.

The last Nintendo release in North America was last year's Just Dance 3. Just Dance 3 is being brought to Japan in July with help from Nintendo as Just Dance Wii 2.

NEWS: Lost Planet Spin-Off Coming to 3DS From Capcom

EX Troopers is a shooter that is curiously also coming to PlayStation 3.

EX Troopers, an anime-inspired "beginner's shooter" from Capcom, is coming to 3DS later this year in Japan, according to a Famitsu article.

The game is related to the Lost Planet series, and is being overseen by Shintaro Kojima, who previously worked on the Monster Hunter series. Kojima is hoping that this shooter will introduce players to the Lost Planet series courtesy of lighter gameplay and an accessible school setting.

The main character is Bren Turner, who is newly enrolled in an academy on EDN-3rd, the main location in the game. At the outset, players choose one of three unique bases for their version of Bren to hail from. In addition to the shooting action, players will also progress through the story using interactive cut scenes.

NEWS: Kirby's Star Stacker Coming to Japan eShop Next Week

Yet another Kirby title makes an appearance on Nintendo's downloadable platform.

Kirby no Kirakira Kizzu, otherwise known as Kirby’s Star Stacker outside of Japan, is coming to the Nintendo 3DS eShop in Japan next week. Originally released in 1997 on the Game Boy, Kirby’s Star Stacker is a puzzle game where players must earn as many stars as possible by matching corresponding blocks.

In Japan, Kirby’s Star Stacker was also remade on the Super Famicom and released about a year after the Game Boy version. While both games are nearly identical, the Super Famicom version includes a story mode where Kirby faces off against opponents from previous Kirby titles.

CONNECTIVITY: Connectibites News Digest - May 16

The dynamic duo discuss Capcom's E3 presence, Pikmin 2, Xenoblade sales, and more.

Neal and Patrick sleuth it up in this latest issue of Connectibites News Digest (yes, we have a name courtesy of The Famicast's James Charlton) as they try to figure out the case of the missing Capcom 3DS and Wii U games at E3.

Next, they try to get to the bottom of Pikmin 2's June release in North America, while wrestling with the demons of Xenoblade's unreported North American sales numbers. After they solve the mystery of Order Up's North American delay to eShop, they talk about Jason Rohrer's Kickstarter and posit how trite LEGO Lord of the Rings sounds. Neal brings up the Nintendo-published Wii U and 3DS title LEGO City Stories in the eleventh hour, leading to a possible E3 sequel where the boys find out where the game has been since being announced during Nintendo's press conference last year.

There's certainly been no shortage of Poké-news lately.

Pokémon Black and White is still set to come out this fall in North America and Europe, confirmed Nintendo, after releasing the box art and more information.

In recent European and North American press releases, it was revealed that the starting city, Hiougi City, will be called Aspertia City in western territories. In addition, it was also revealed that like Black and White, the sequel's version mascots (Black Kyurem and White Kyurem) will be version exclusive. Also, Black Kyurem and White Kyurem's signature moves, Ice Burn and Freeze Shock, will be ice type rather than fire or electric type.

NEWS: Capcom to Have No Playable Nintendo Games at E3 2012

There will be no Street Fighting or Resident Eviling on Wii U or 3DS this E3.

Capcom won't have any games for Nintendo's systems playable at E3 2012, a company representative told us earlier today.

Previously, there have been rumors of a new Resident Evil 3DS game and the localization of Monster Hunter Tri G being unveiled at E3. While this does confirm the games won't be playable, this announcement does not completely rule out the possibility of an announcement about either game at E3 2012.

The only two projects that Capcom is officially developing for Nintendo systems are Monster Hunter 4 and Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney. Both games are supposed to come out on 3DS in Japan later this year.

NEWS: Order Up!! Demo Hitting eShop on May 24

There's no word on the full release yet, but you'll be able to try out the restaurant simulator in less than two weeks.

Order Up!! is getting a demo on the eShop on May 24, according to developer SuperVillain Studios.

The game was initially set to be a retail release, and actually did come out as a retail release in Europe last December. However, SuperVillain Studios and publisher Ignition decided to release the game as a download-only release in North America. The date for the full release on the eShop is still unconfirmed, but it should be coming soon.

Order Up!! previously appeared on Wii, and you can read our review of that version here.

NEWS: Jason Rohrer's DS Game Diamond Trust of London Now on Kickstarter

The developer of artistic games such as Sleep is Death has a new DS game on the way, with a little help from his friends.

A new DS game by independent developer Jason Rohrer has been approved by Nintendo, and has appeared on Kickstarter.com as a way of raising the manufacturing costs to produce retail cartridges. The game, which has been in development since 2010, was at one point to be published by Zoo Games. It seems as if that deal is now off, with Rohrer self-publishing the game.

According to the development blog, Rohrer wasn't interested in pursuing a digitial distribution due to the limited availability of DSiWare among gamers. Rohrer noted in his blog: "I did some research about DSiWare and was disappointed: it had a narrow reach (only 10 million units) and poor sales numbers. Not only would my game likely not sell well on DSiWare, but my existing fans would be unable to get the game without buying DSi units. You know, everyone has a DS lying around. Very few people have a DSi."

EXTRA LIFE: Super Battleship

Does this interpretation of the classic game float or sink?

Alex:

Developed by Synergistic Software for the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis in 1993, Super Battleship goes for a simulation of the classic Milton Bradley guessing game experience, while also incorporating a twist on that conventional formula.

In honor of the release of the new Battleship—the game based on the movie based on the game—I thought I would dust off the old Super Nintendo and grab a used copy of the game. Although I don't necessarily get as hardcore into the game as some, I have decent experience with simpler versions, and still remember some tricks from when I was younger. For instance, arranging your ships in a tightly packed cube in the corner of the grid makes getting hit much tougher (at least in my experience).
