NEWS: THQ Explains the Proportions of uDraw's Collapse

1.4 million unsold units and $80 million in potential sales are collecting dust in THQ's inventory.

THQ CFO Paul Pucino revealed that the uDraw performed $100 million below expectations in sales during a February 2 investor's Q & A.

According to the corporate officer, $80 million was lost from the 1.4 million units unsold in THQ's inventory, and the remaining 20 can be blamed on major discounting placed on many of the units that did sell.

At the investors meeting, the publisher has announced a $55.9 million dollar loss for the quarter. According to Pucino, $30 million of that can be directly attributed to the uDraw.

NEWS: THQ Laying Off Up to 240 Personnel, CEO Takes Salary Cut

The move is part of a "plan of restructuring".

THQ is initiating a 'restructuring plan' which will result in up to 240 job losses and a one-year 50% pay cut of company CEO Brian Farrell, as reported in a recent company financial document.

For the most part, many of the planned cuts will be implemented by March 31, with some being pushed to September, and the aforementioned salary cut (from $718,500 to $359,250) beginning on February 13. THQ expects the restructuring plan to cost as much as 11 million dollars, with $8 million to go into severance costs, $500,000 into contract terminations, and up to $2.5 million into charges related to other fixed assets.

BLOG: Sakura Samurai Freezing Issue

Having trouble loading Nintendo's latest eShop game? We might have a solution.

So you bought Sakura Samurai despite my lukewarm review and it won't load? That sucks.

But seriously, I ran into the same issue when I was reviewing the game. I booted the game and it would just start with a black screen with "Loading..." spazzing out in the bottom right-hand corner of the system. It effectively froze my system, as the only way to restart is to hold the power button down and do a hard reset.

When I asked our Nintendo representatives about this issue, they had no idea. Fortunately, I was running out of SD card space at the same time, so I bought a new SD card, replacing the one that came with the system. After moving the files over to the new bigger SD card, Sakura Samurai worked fine.

Xenoblade Chronicles will be releasing in North America on April 6, according to the game's North American website.

Previously given a tentative April release date, North Americans can breathe a sigh of relief that the game's launch is finally almost here. As previously revealed, the game will be available only at Nintendo's online store and GameStop.

Xenoblade Chronicles was released across Europe in September 2011.

NEWS: Hulu Plus Still Coming to Wii, 3DS

The service was originally promised for the end of 2011.

Hulu Plus is still unavailable for 3DS and Wii owners, but Nintendo has re-confirmed the release of the application in a recent video.

Although no details have surfaced about the application since its announcement, it was featured alongside Netflix during a video posted by Nintendo regarding the benefits of connecting to the eShop. Under the Hulu Plus logo, the words "coming soon" are visible.

When the service was announced in October, the original promise was to have it released as an application by the end of 2011. However, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime also updated the release date to "coming soon" during the October 21 edition of Nintendo Direct.

FEATURE: Terror Terminology

No need to take notes, they're all here.

There have been a number of complicated terminologies in the Resident Evil canon, so many that it may be hard to keep up with them all. Here's a list of some of the most commonly used words, names, and acronyms.

Umbrella Corporation

The evil pharmaceutical corporation that started the whole Biohazard mess. Umbrella was founded by three college friends in the 1960s and became world famous under the guise of a pharmaceutical and technological research conglomerate. They had multiple company branches and research facilities all over the world, secretly engaged in grotesque viral experiments on human test subjects, creating undead monstrosities for the purpose of chemical and biological warfare on the black market, including super soldiers. They were eventually exposed and shut down by Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield.

FEATURE: Viral Vocabulary

The biological troublemakers.

Here's a list of all the nasty infections the series has spread across humanity like so much rancid Vegemite of death. We'll go into the kind of abominations each one is capable of producing as well.

Progenitor Virus

This was the virus that started it all. Borne from a rare species of flower found only in Africa, this was discovered by the founding fathers of the Umbrella Corporation, who used it as a base for all of their evil genetic research. Its most successful animal implementation was the humble leech which--under the influence of the Progenitor Virus--banded together to form large, horrifying creatures.

RECOMMENDATIONS: GBA Ambassador Games Edition

3DS Ambassadors got 10 free GBA games from Nintendo, but are they all worth recommending?

When Nintendo dropped the price of the 3DS by $80, the company also announced that gamers who had already bought and registered the hardware would get twenty free downloadable virtual console games by way of amends. Nintendo World Report already looked over the ten NES virtual console games 3DS Ambassadors got, and in December Nintendo finished off the set by releasing the ten promised GBA titles for download.

But before we see whether these games hold up enough to earn our recommendations, a gaming public service announcement:

BLOG: Why Do I Play Pokémon?

Why do you strive to be very best?

I recently found my SoulSilver version and decided it was time for me to set out on yet another adventure to become the best trainer. As I booted up the game, erased what data was on there (shedding a tear for some of my old friends) my roommate asked me something.

“Why do you even play Pokémon? I don’t see the appeal of it.”

I stopped for a moment. I didn’t quite know how to answer that.

“It’s not about the story,” my friend answered, “it’s about something else. It’s about the world.”

REVIEW: LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 Review

This Harry Potter isn't a stud in LEGO Hogwarts.

Though LEGO video games have gained a lot of favour over the past few years, the Harry Potter versions have been up and down. Could this be the game to finally translate these beloved movies to an enjoyable video game? Possibly.

Having never played a LEGO or current-gen Harry Potter game, I was excited to finally experience one of my favorite movie franchises in video game form.

I like the idea of tying several movies altogether into one cohesive, continuous story. The simple, non-voiced cut scenes condense explain (some of) the plot, making it palatable to anyone, regardless of age or language. This is quite a feat, considering how complex the stories become in the final few books. Of course, all the nuance and deep explanation is lost, but that’d be no fun at all.

While the Wii saw demos for downloadable titles, up to this point Nintendo has only released demos for retail titles on their 3DS online shop.

The title, which releases next week on February 8 in Japan and retails for 800 yen, is an RPG where you must search for, catch, and proceed on an adventure with humans who are trapped floating around on radio waves. Currently, there is no scheduled release date for Denpa Ningen no RPG outside of Japan.

NEWS: Nintendo Increases Expected Losses for the 2011 Fiscal Year

Nintendo will be losing significantly more money than expected.

Nintendo predicts a net loss of 65 billion yen during the fiscal year ending in March 2012, according to their recent financial briefing.

Originally Nintendo had only anticipated a loss of 20 billion yen. However, in the first nine months of this fiscal year, Nintendo has already experienced a loss of 48.4 billion yen; this increase led to the drastic raising of their net losses.

Net sales for the company were down 31.2% in the last nine months. Nintendo attributed this decline in sales to the decrease of Nintendo DS and Wii hardware being sold. The Nintendo 3DS's price cut also affected sales numbers.

The Sega titles have been officially rated by the ESRB.

Shinobi and Sonic Triple Trouble have been rated by the ESRB for release on 3DS as Sega Game Gear Virtual Console titles.

The release marks the first instance of Game Gear titles releasing for the service, a feature announced by Nintendo at the 2011 Game Developers Conference along with TurboGrafx 16 titles. Triple Trouble is, outside of PC and GameCube re-releases, the only exclusive Game Gear Sonic the Hedgehog game. Likewise, this iteration of Shinobi (sometimes referred to as The G.G. Shinobi) is known as the first game in the series specifically developed for a handheld.

Genius Sonority, the development team behind the Pokemon Colosseum games, has announced a new RPG for the 3DS eShop called Denpa Ningen.

Denpa Ningen (which translates to Radio Wave People RPG), is a game in which the 3DS's augmented reality features are used to generate different RPG party members.
NEWS: Pokémon + Nobunaga's Ambition to Include DSi-Enhanced Features

Unfortunately, the game might be region locked.

The crossover game Pokémon + Nobunaga's Ambition will have DSi-enhanced features.

Pidgi.net recently discovered the product code of the title, which confirms that the final release of the game will feature DSi enhancement. The product code is TSA-TWL-VPYJ-JPN. Each set of letters represents a specific feature in the game (for instance, JPN indicates the Japanese release). Specifically, TWL confirms that the game will use DSi features, though they could simply be limited to smoother gameplay with the handheld's faster processor.

REVIEW: Sakura Samurai: Art of the Sword Review

Cherry blossoms are really pretty, but their inclusion doesn't make Sakura Samurai a great game.

Sakura Samurai is a bit of a peculiar portable game, especially considering it is a download title for the 3DS. It's slow-paced in almost every way, ranging from how the character moves to the way combat unfolds. Saving can only be done in specific areas, making it almost useless if you’ve only got a few minutes to play it. Still, despite the fact that this is a decidedly anti-portable portable game, Sakura Samurai is fun, albeit a little listless.

The gameplay could be succinctly summed up as samurai Punch-Out, as it is predicated on dodging enemy attacks and then quickly striking while there is an opening. There are differences, chiefly the fact that you travel through beautiful feudal Japan lands fighting foes instead of sparring in a boxing ring, but even with the period piece trappings, the game boils down to one-on-one fights with a little outside fluff adding some variety.

NEWS: Activision Struggling to Meet Demand for Skylanders

The highly successful toy-driven game is flying off the shelves.

Activision is having problems keeping Skylanders in stock, but are doing their best to keep up with demand, Activision VP of Marketing John Coyne told Kotaku.

Skylanders has become a massive holiday hit for Activision, with demand for starter kits and more figures going up since its release last fall. The Kotaku article mentions that several stores, which include GameStop, Walmart, and Target, have quickly run out of the game and toys as soon as they receive them and put them on shelves.

REVIEW: F1 2011 Review

Your mileage may vary.

My enjoyment for this game may be entirely due to the fact that, aside from casually watching the random F1 race with friends, I know absolutely nothing about the sport aside from its distinct vehicles and lengthy tracks. This game is the opposite of Mario Kart, which I appreciate, but it also takes a certain amount of patience to learn and actual skill to win. There won't be Blue Shells clobbering the dude in first place, here. You've gotta win by actually driving well.

If, like me, you know nothing about driving an F1 car, fear not—the game includes so many player assist tools that, at a certain point, the car almost drives itself. Auto braking, arrow signals, tire wear, a blue line down the road—these toggles (and more) are optional and readily available for idiots like me. And I really love that, since you essentially customize the difficulty settings, which carry over to each of the many game types.

NEWS: Wii Virtual Console February 2012 Japan Releases Announced

Like January, three titles will be revived, two for Neo Geo.

February's Japanese Wii Virtual Console releases have been announced, and next month looks a lot like this month. Wii gamers in Japan can expect two more Neo Geo fighters and a Kunio-kun dodge ball game.

D4 seems intent in making their entire SNK line-up available on Virtual Console. Just this month, they published Real Bout Fatal Fury on Wii, and next month, they have Real Bout Fatal Fury Special (Real Bout Garou Densetsu) slated. The fighter, which originally debuted in 1997, is the followup to Real Bout Fatal Fury and features new characters and graphics. Like most Neo Geo games, it will cost 900 Wii Points.

NEWS: Iwata Hints at the Future of Micro-Transactions for Wii U, 3DS

He plans to find a balance between flexibility and security.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata explained how Nintendo will use micro-transactions during a recent Q&A with investors at the recent financial briefing.

Iwata stated that Nintendo plans to keep an appropriate level of flexibility in its handling of micro-payments (transactions involving a very small sum of money for things like downloadable content or game enhancements, which are already seen in many social games), but also remarks that Nintendo must keep a similar level of strictness to account for its younger audience.

NEWS: Nintendo Will Make 'Bold' Online Move 'When the Time Is Ripe'

The key to all of this might be in Nintendo Direct, as Iwata aims to "construct a seamless flow" that guides viewers through videos and demos.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata wants to eschew the idea that Nintendo is "cautious, conservative, or even negative about business on a network," as he responded to investors at the recent Financial Briefing Q&A.

"Our answer [to that notion] is, in short, that we will make a bold attempt when the time is ripe," Iwata said. "Unless the timing is right, we will lose the consumers who do not have an Internet connection. We have not gone so far yet because our developers have a belief that our products should be available to as many people as possible."

NEWS: Wii U Controller 'Revolves Around the Original Concept of the Wii Remote'

Nintendo's developers are also "taking into consideration [the system's] network-related capabilities."

The Wii U controller's realization of the original concept of the Wii Remote is one of the main ways the system is unique, according to Nintendo's Genyo Takeda, senior managing director and general manager of the IRD division, who said as much during the Q&A portion of Nintendo's recent Financial Reports Briefing.

Takeda, who worked on the design of the Wii and also directed Nintendo classics such as Punch-Out and StarTropics, followed up the point by saying: "We now have the new controller which revolves around the original concept of the Wii Remote, and the developers can take advantage of multiple screens, which enable them to leverage upon the unique combination of a big TV screen and a smaller screen in player’s hands."

IMPRESSIONS: Rhythm Heaven Fever Impressions

Wubbadubbadubba'sattrue? Yes, Rhythm Heaven Fever continues the series' excellence.

Rhythm Heaven, perhaps Nintendo's greatest overlooked series, is finally coming to Wii in North America. Last week, I had the chance to check it out at Nintendo. If you're a Rhythm Heaven veteran, you'll find the affair very familiar. If not, you're long overdue for the experience.

The presentation features a distinctive Flash-like 2D art style, and most importantly, extremely catchy tunes. Coming from the WarioWare team, the game's style and quirky humor is very similar, but rather than focus quick-fire mini-games, Rhythm Heaven Fever tests players rhythm sense. The game is both endearing and absolutely zany. Seriously, you will
wonder what possessed the creators to combine the elements in the way
they did. It may be nonsensical, but it's musical genius. If music is a drug, Rhythm Heaven Fever is amphetamine.

BLOG: Club Nintendo Rewards: Poster Sets

Here's a look at some of the awesome posters available.

Back before the poster sets on Club Nintendo jumped up in point price, I
ordered myself three of the sets - the Mario, Zelda and Zelda 25th
Anniversary collections. It wasn't too long before I found myself with nine
brand new posters - three featuring Mario and six featuring scenes from several Zelda games. "These are too good to gunk up with blu-tack or skewer with drawing pins", I thought. Framing was the only option.

All of the posters are extremely nice, and
had I the funding and the available wall-estate I would have had every
single one of them framed. Instead, I had to choose between my three
favorites. Surprisingly, the same style of gold frame seemed to match the artwork for all three that I chose. I apologize in advance for the angled photography, but with
the windows and light source positioning it was the best I could do
without direct camera-flash flare on the glass frames.

CONNECTIVITY: Episode 19 - Daily Double Trouble

Somebody is really good at video game trivia.

Pack it up, pack it in, let me begin... this week's Connectivity show notes. We've got the usual news segment starting things off this week, featuring Patrick, Scott and Zach. I'm sure you'll find it quite newsy indeed.

But the biggie this week is the return of Connectivity Jeopardy (Connectopardy?) It's pretty awesome this week, let me tell you. I don't want to spoil it, but somebody is seriously good at this trivia game about video games.

At the end of the show, Andy and Zach wax poetic on the Playstation 2 duo of Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. The only way to finish this segment it to climb to the top of it, jam your sword into its weak spot, and then feel really bad about the beautiful creature you just murdered for your own selfish desires.

We confess the games we've never played in our Video Game Bucket Lists.

New Business is fairly short this week, but a monstrous featuring segment makes up for it. Greg hasn't played much this week in the absence of Resident Evil, but he does address Nintendo's recent financial news. Jon begins to catch up with one of our favorite games last year, Radiant Historia. Jonny has a pair of platformers with Trine 2 for PC and a conjugal visit with Super Mario Galaxy 2. James surprises us with his short review of a tiny DSiWare game called WarioWare: Snapped!

The show really kicks off in part two as we churn through our extensive Bucket Lists -- games we've always wanted to play and hope to experience before we flee this mortal coil. Despite the grim premise, it's a fun-filled discussion as we march through each generation of video games, naming those titles that eluded us in the past and still call out to our senses of curiosity. It's a nostalgic, surprising set of games, and we had a blast with the discussion. Hope you enjoy it too! Be sure to let us know what's on your list with a quick email to the show.

FEATURE: Resident Evil: The Story So Far

A run through the RE lore.

Note: Because it’s currently unclear exactly how the plot of RE: Revelations ties into the larger RE mythos (aside from taking place before RE5), this narrative focuses on the adventures of Jill Valentine and Chris Redfield, who founded the BSAA and are the main characters in RE: Revelations.

When we first meet Jill and Chris, they are running the hell away from zombie dogs outside of the Arklay Mansion. They get inside and bar the doors shut along with S.T.A.R.S. colleagues Barry Burton and Albert Wesker, before all four go about trying to find the missing members of Bravo Team in the enormous building, hidden in the Midwestern woods outside Raccoon City. Jill and Chris eventually discover a basement laboratory and a vast cover-up involving pharmaceutical giant Umbrella Corp. and the development of a dangerous viral strain called the T-Virus, which mutates animals and plants into dangerous bioweapons. Among these test subjects are zombies, reptilian Hunters, giant man-eating plants, and the pinnacle of Umbrella’s experiments, the Tyrant. The two also uncover Albert Wesker’s involvement in Umbrella: he had lured the S.T.A.R.S. team to the mansion to gather battle data on Umbrella’s creations! After revealing his nefarious plan, Wesker is seemingly killed by the Tyrant, which itself is subsequently killed (via rocket launcher—very subtle) by Chris and Jill, who fly off into the sunset.

REVIEW: One Piece: Gigant Battle Review

We are on the cruise, but does it sink or swim?

Before we begin, I'll point out that I am a gigantic fan of One Piece. I've read the manga and watched the series since long before an English <del>castration</del> translation was even heard of, and I have an absurdly excessive collection of figurines and other merchandise. Thus, it's fair to say that I'll review this game from a fan's perspective—the target demographic for the game. If you're not up to speed with recent events in the story, there may be spoilers. You've been warned.

The story goes that Luffy and his Straw Hat Pirates are invited to participate in the Pirate Grand Prix, a kind of battle tournament spanning across several major islands, to get to the mythical goal of Last Resort and claim the championship title. The premise is paper-thin but serves as an excuse to feature many, many characters and locations from around the Sabaody Archipelago, right up to a mid-war Marineford stronghold (as well as a few old favorite locations), and that's all that counts.

NEWS: Resident Evil: Revelations' Box Art Title Misspelled

Capcom has acknowledged and will be fixing the mistake.

Box art of the North American version of Resident Evil: Revelations has a typo, publisher Capcom acknowledged.

Images circulating the internet via Twitter, revealed that the typo is not just an isolated incident. The side of game's box reads "Revelaitons" instead of "Revelations."

Capcom's Christian Svensson responded to the issue, "We're aware that this has affected a portion of the production
run. There's likely to be some news to follow closer to launch on this
topic." A Capcom representative followed up, "It has come to our attention that there was a misspelling on the Resident Evil: Revelations packaging, We apologise for the mistake, which will be corrected for subsequent productions of the game. We are working on a solution to provide affected customers with the correct packaging. Please visit Capcom-Unity for updates."

NEWS: Resident Evil: Revelations Now $39.99

The premium-priced Resident Evil title for 3DS is now 10 dollars cheaper.

Resident Evil: Revelations will now be priced at $39.99, Capcom announced through its community blog.

Originally, Revelations was priced at $49.99 due to the game being on a more expensive 4GB cartridge, making it one of the few 3DS titles to be sold at that price. While Capcom maintained that the value of the content justified the original price, after "weeks of effort," the company was able to lower the game's price.

NEWS: Netflix Cancels Plans for Video Game Rental Service

Netflix is no longer going to offer video game rentals, but they may begin 3D streaming.

Netflix has dropped their plans to offer video game rentals. This comes just months after they revealed that they would not be splitting their DVD and streaming services. The video game rental service was to be part of the new company, Qwikster; however, with it no longer planned, it seems that Netflix has decided to cancel any plans for game distribution in the immediate future.

Additionally, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced that the company is looking into 3D streaming to supplement their 3D Blu-ray rentals, though he did not specifically mention if there would be 3DS compatibility.
