PREVIEW: Pac-Man Museum Preview

Pac-Man Battle Royale coming to a Nintendo system near you.

Do you remember the "Namco Museum" collections? Namco would slap Pole Position, Galaga, Galaxian, Pac-Man and Rally-X on a disc, create a little "virtual arcade" to explore, add some original materials from the games and call it a day.

That same philosophy seems to drive Pac-Man Museum, a paltry collection of three Pac-Man titles: the original arcade game, Pac-Man Championship Edition and, available for the first time on home consoles and handhelds, Pac-Man Battle Royale. Details are scant as to whether more games will be later announced or if there are plans to make them available through DLC, but for now, what you see is what you get.

NEWS: Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies May Still Have a Physical Release, Fans Asked to Speak Up

Head over to the Capcom-Unity forums to chime in!

Due to a number of requests for a physical release of Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney - Dual Destinies, Capcom has "mobilized [their] US team to put together possible options that may address the concerns," according to Producer Motohide Eshiro.

What this means is that anyone who wants a physical release can post on the thread Eshiro opened on the Capcom-Unity forums to have their voice heard. After he is able to gauge demand through the forum, he says he "may be able to present an option that puts the ball back in the fans' court."

BLOG: The 'Not at E3 Bystander' 1st Annual NWR Unofficial Awards

Zack was not included in the planning for the NWR E3 Awards, so this happened.

So apparently
since I wasn’t at E3 I wasn't allowed to help with the E3 awards. Well I don’t
subscribe to that “logic” and decided to make my own. Yep, I gave out these
awards in a secret ceremony that happened in my head. Expect to see them listed
on the box for said games when released.

Best use of a Kirby: Super Smash Bros.

The new Smash
Bros. has Kirby in it. It was the only game at E3 with Kirby in it. Kirby is
much better a character than Mega Man; I would actually prefer a Kirby variant
character instead of Mega Man.

INTERVIEW: Interview with Harvest Moon Creator Yasuhiro Wada

Find out about Wada's new game - Hometown Story - and how it differs from Harvest Moon.

Alongside his new game Hometown Story at E3 2013, Toybox President Yasuhiro Wada told us all about why he is diverging from his Harvest Moon roots and more, including touching on his love for The Legend of Zelda series.

After creating Harvest Moon close to 20 years ago, Wada is using his years of experience to create Hometown Story, a game in which players must run a shop and interact with villagers (all in their hometown!). This 3DS game, set for release this fall, is a joint venture from Wada's new Toybox studio, Harvest Moon publisher Natsume, and Rising Star Games.

MAILBAG: The Return of Mailbag: E3 2013 Edition

You've got qualified questions, we've got educated guesses.

So you watched the Nintendo Direct, went to Best Buy to play Mario Kart 8, but still don't quite understand what Nintendo's got up their sleeve? No problem! We're here to help.

The oft-neglected, but never-forgotten NWR Mailbag is here to save the day. If you've got something you'd like to know about E3 2013, why not ask the guys who were actually there? We'll be fielding questions for the next few days for an all new edition of Mailbag sometime later this week.

So feed the bag! We'll get back to you just as soon as we finish this Triforce hunt we're working on...

With new shading and updated graphics, Wind Waker HD makes the GameCube classic look like it probably does in your fuzzy memories of the original version.

NEWS: Club Nintendo Celebrating Launch of New Super Luigi U With Double Coins, Pin Giveaway

Nintendo is giving fans a bigger reason to go digital with New Super Luigi U.

Club Nintendo is celebrating the launch of New Super Luigi U with two promotions. First, Club Nintendo will give members double the coins for taking the New Super Luigi U registration survey, after they purchase the game, earning 40 coins instead of 20. Second, every Club Nintendo member that downloads New Super Luigi U will be entered in a random drawing to win one of 980 Luigi pins.

The “Year of Luigi Pin”, as Nintendo is calling it, may not be as rare an item as the contest makes it out to be. It appears identical to a pin that has been sold at the Nintendo World Store for years now. However, we will only know for sure if someone is able to compare the two after winning.

IMPRESSIONS: Wii Party U Impressions

GamePad games make for a bigger, more fun party. (Updated with off-screen video)

Not content with having players mash a button or rotate a control stick as quickly as they could, the mini-games would have you try to deceive your opponents, or use the Wii Remote in some novel ways to offer games that could be played around the house and not just on the television.

NEWS: 3DS System Update Brings Save Data Backup and New Camera Features

No word on when NA will receive the Mii Plaza games.

Nintendo has released system software version 6.0 worldwide, giving North American 3DS owners access to save data backup and new features for the 3DS camera app.

The save data backup feature allows users to backup save data for download titles to the SD card. The utility can be found in the System Settings, and allows users to backup one title at a time, for up to 30 titles.

Some of the software that are unable to be backed up:

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon

Cubic Ninja

Monster Hunter 3G

Reel Fishing 3D Paradise

Pokemon Rumble Blast

Freakyforms Deluxe

Pokemon Dream Radar

Senran Kagura Burst: Guren no Shoujotachi

Sengoku Musou Chronicle 2nd

Animal Crossing: New Leaf

NEWS: Sakurai Considering Mewtwo for Next Smash Bros. Games

Mewtwo may return in Smash Bros., possibly with his new X and Y form.

Masahiro Sakurai is considering having Mewtwo return in the next Smash Bros. games.

During last week’s Pokémon X and Pokémon Y Developer Roundtable at E3 there was a Q & A session with Tsunekazu Ishihara, President and CEO of the Pokémon Company, and Junichi Masuda, Director at Game Freak. I was fortunate enough to ask the men the following question:

“Can you go into more detail on how Mewtwo changes forms, and would you like this new form to appear in the new Smash Bros.?”

Upon asking this question the audience burst into laughter. Both Tsunekazu Ishihara and Junichi Masuda also had a surprised look on their face and appeared to not know how to safely answer the question. Sakurai was also in the audience and looked as if he were thinking, “Oh man, not this again!” after the question was asked.

NEWS: Nintendo's Free-to-Play Game Is Steel Diver

Nintendo enters the free-to-play market with Steel Diver.

Nintendo's first free-to-play game is going to be Steel Diver.

First talked about during Nintendo's E3 Analyst Briefing, Shigeru Miyamoto, creator of Mario and Steel Diver, revealed to IGN that Nintendo's first venture into the realm of free-to-play gaming would be Steel Diver. Not a direct port, this Steel Diver game will feature a new four player battle mode, and in his words, "It’s going to be very fun."

It is not yet known how Nintendo will profit from the game, whether it be micro-transactions, or membership, but the game will eventually be released in a packaged form, though no system has been announced. Even though no release date was given, Miyamoto says, "It's something that we're hoping to be able to show relatively soon."

REVIEW MINI: Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine Review Mini

Dropping beans and blowing up machines.

Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine on the Sega Genesis was my
entry point into the world of Puyo Puyo, a popular style of puzzle games.
Before diving into the Game Gear version on the 3DS Virtual Console (reviewed
here), I didn’t even really know a handheld version existed. After spending
time with the well-emulated release, my takeaway is that it’s a fun Puyo
experience and a good representation of what makes the series great.

However, using the Dot-to-Dot screen size, the game is hard to
play. Mean Bean Machine is a falling block game, and as the blocks fall faster,
the shrunken down view becomes more and more of a hassle. If you can deal with
playing it a little stretched out or zoomed in, then Mean Bean Machine is still
a good portable form of Puyo Puyo. The diabolical Scenario Mode takes you
through 13 stages against the computer, Puzzle Mode, exclusive to the Game Gear
version, gives you specific tasks to complete, and Endless Mode is, well,
endless.

REVIEW MINI: Sonic the Hedgehog Review Mini

Slow and steady.

I
know I'm in the minority on this one, but my favorite classic Sonic
stage from the first game is Marble Zone. Why? Because you
can't gain speed: it's all precision
platforming.

Perhaps this is why I enjoy this
Sonic the Hedgehog on Game Gear so much. While it is faster than the
average platformer, your time is not spent watching Sonic going through
loop-the-loops, but doing more careful, methodical
platforming.

REVIEW MINI: The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons Review Mini

'Tis the season for a Zelda game on the 3DS Virtual Console.

Playing Oracle of Seasons on the 3DS Virtual Console for the very first time is a surreal experience. I didn’t own a single Game Boy system until the original gray brick was past its prime, so I ended up missing out on a lot of key titles, like the portable Zelda games. I went into this game thinking that it was going to be a cute, bite-sized Zelda experience, unlike its bigger console counterparts. I was not only proven wrong, but was proven ill-prepared for the grand adventure I was about to embark upon.

NEWS: Sega RPG Hero Bank Announced for Nintendo 3DS

In the Hero Bank world, the keyword is "money." Just like the real world, then.

Hero Bank, a "battle life RPG" from Sega that centers around building an enormous financial fortune, has been announced as a Nintendo 3DS exclusive.

The prime component of this game is the Hero Battle, a hugely popular cyber sport in which competitors enter one-on-one fights with virtual avatars based on world heroes. Monetary management will also play a significant role, with each victorious battle yielding a large cash reward, and according to Sega, the ultimate aim of the game is to become a billionaire.

FEATURE: Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate

The Metroid Prime guys are making a 2D Batman Metroidvania. So far so good.

Our ears perked up when Armature Studios, a company founded by the leads from the Metroid Prime games, was announced to be making a Metroid style Batman game on 3DS. While the E3 demo only showed the opening area, which was light on exploration and heavy on proving they can make a 2D Arkham game, the potential is there, and a great number of the NWR staff is excited by their promise.

As we find out more before the game's October 25 release, our tune might change, but for now, check out this clip from Jonathan Metts' E3 2013 impressions and see our optimism.

FEATURE: Shin Megami Tensei IV

After a great RPG start in 2013 on 3DS, the next Shin Megami Tensei game continues the trend.

The demo for Shin Megami Tensei IV at E3 2013 was something that took a little while to get into, but it showed fantastic promise for an epic adventure that is coming to North America in less than a month. Our general consensus was that of "well damn, I need to square away a month or so to get into this game."

Shin Megami Tensei IV is a game that, as Guillaume put it, is usually believed to be "impenetrable and probably not for you," but don't worry. This Atlus-made game coming to 3DS on July 16 looks to just be a damn fine Japanese RPG.

FEATURE: Cloudberry Kingdom

One Wii U eShop game took most of us by surprise at E3 2013.

We here at Nintendo World Report seem to usually have a predilection for hard-as-nails platformers. It's not a total staff-wide phenomenon, but if you show us an interesting and challenging platformer at E3, chances are we'll probably include it in some sort of awards. It should be no surprise that Cloudberry Kingdom impressed the hell out of us.

From their Kickstarter origins to their Ubisoft-backed final stretch, Pwnee Studios has put together what seems to be a delightfully difficult platformer that can work for a wide audience.

FEATURE: The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds

The Link Between Worlds demo is equal parts Link to the Past and new, interesting stuff.

The demo for the newly christened The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds was very similar to the demo that Carmine played back in April, but it was nonetheless impressive at E3 2013. Wandering around the Link to the Past-inspired overworld, finding secrets and using Link's array of items was familiar and fun, and the snappy combat and puzzles present in the multi-tiered dungeon was wonderful to experience.

A Link Between Worlds was close to a unanimous addition to our best of E3 2013 list, and our E3 team all seem to be anticipating this November 2013 3DS release.

FEATURE: Pikmin 3

The flying Pikmin are pretty sweet.

Pikmin 3 made its second appearance at an E3 after debuting last year, and the second time around, it was even more impressive. Highlighting the mission mode in both single-player and co-op forms, as well as the neat one-versus-one Bingo Battle, a lot of the NWR staff finally came around on this game and hopped on the Pikmin hype train.

While the GamePad controls are still rough, the Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk controls are, as far as we can tell, spot on. With new Pikmin, three astronauts to work with, and plenty of challenges, Pikmin 3 looks to be an impressive experience at a glance. We'll find out for sure on August 4 when it hits Wii U.

FEATURE: Bayonetta 2

From what we've seen, Bayonetta 2 looks to be more of the same awesome insanity.

It was somewhat of a shock to see Bayonetta 2 playable during E3 2013, and it was a welcome surprise. The titular character had her new short haircut, but the same frenetic action-packed tricks. The debut demo was more or less the same gameplay present in 2009's original Bayonetta. It highlighted a few new features, including the new Umbran Climax special move and the weird but workable touch screen controls. Bayonetta 2 will hopefully continue to delight when it comes out in 2014 on Wii U.

Check out a snippet from Kim Keller's E3 2013 impressions below:

The 3D Land experience moves to Wii U and we dug it.

Super Mario 3D World was the long-awaited 3D Mario reveal and while it might not be the epic Galaxy experience we all dreamed of, 3D World's debut was damn impressive. With a number of Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario World references, ranging from the four-players including Peach and Toad to the Mario World goombas, and some fun, inventive level design, most of our E3 team came away mighty impressed with Nintendo's December 2013 Wii U release.

Here's a snippet from Justin Berube's E3 2013 impressions:

We picked out our seven favorite games. See what rocked our E3s.

Instead of doling out awards for best graphics or gameplay or Pac-Man Vs. clone, we decided to just highlight seven games we thought were exemplary at E3. These are games that impressed us, and caused some of our staffers to excitedly tell the others "yo dude, you have got to play this!"

The deliberation involved our E3 team, including myself (Neal), Jonathan Metts, Michael "TYP" Cole, Alex Culafi, Guillaume Veillette, Andrew Brown, Jared Rosenberg, Justin Berube, Kim Keller, and Aaron Kaluszka. So if you think we're crazy, you can blame us.

Staff Sez starts with a single question posed to each of the NWR

NEWS: Reggie Fils-Aime Talks Wii U As a Next Generation Platform, Third Parties

Is the Wii U a next generation platform? Reggie Fils-Aime says it is.

Reggie Fils-Aime, Chief Operating Officer of Nintendo of America, had a recent interview with CNNMoney about the Wii U as a next-gen platform saying “Nintendo is next generation, Wii U is next generation.”

Since the launch of the Wii U there has been some debate over whether or not it should be considered "next gen"; Reggie disagrees because of the innovation he believes the GamePad is bringing to the marketplace. When it comes to low hardware sales he says that there is “one truism about this business, software sells hardware,” and he believes the many popular franchises being brought to the Wii U will make for a strong holiday season.

BLOG: Smash Bros. Online: An Odyssey

One man's journey into that abyss that is Brawl Online.

Late last week, after watching the Super Smash Bros E3 trailer for the fourth or fifth time, I got the itch. So I dug out my Smash Bros. Brawl disc, and put it, for the first time, into my Wii U. I hadn't played Smash Bros. since being forced to abandon GameCube controls by virtue of transferring my save to the Wii U. Thankfully, the Classic Controller Pro is a capable substitute. I played a few matches against the computer to warm up. Afterwards, for a laugh, I hopped online and tried to play a random match.

Show off your town to all your jealous friends!

3DS owners can now take advantage of Nintendo's Image Share service in English by going to http://i.nintendo.net in their 3DS browser and following the instructions.

This service, which has been available in Japanese for a few months already, allows users to upload screenshots from Animal Crossing: New Leaf to Twitter or Tumblr. The service automatically tags Tweets sent from this service with #ACNL.

Screenshots can be taken from within Animal Crossing: New Leaf by pressing the L and R buttons together; they're then automatically saved to the SD card.

BLOG: The Quest for the Perfect 3DS XL Case

How I found the Holy Grail of 3DS XL cases.

If you’re like me, you like to keep your electronics in the best condition possible. Of course, this typically means buying some sort of case to protect them. Usually, it isn’t hard to find cases for say, an iPhone or even the original 3DS, but finding anything that fits the 3DS XL without doubling its size has been difficult, even nearly a year after its release.

Before I upgraded to the 3DS XL, I went through several 3DS cases that varied in quality. For a while, I was very satisfied with a Zelda-themed case manufactured by PDP. The case had a soft lining that absorbed shocks and kept it from scratching the system. Other than the fact that the artwork rubbed off over time, the case seemed to do exactly what I wanted it to. It protected my 3DS without being too bulky.

RADIO FREE NINTENDO: RFN at E3 2013: 1,001 Spikes Interview and Final Thoughts

We close out our podcasts from the show with one more interview, plus a series of one-on-one conversations with the NWR staff.

For our last episode recorded at E3 2013, we have a string of short clips, most recorded on the final day of the show. But first, there's an interview with Samu Asada and Tyrone Rodriguez, the developer and publisher of 1,001 Spikes. It's coming to Wii U and 3DS later this year, and this super-difficult, retro 2D action game might be worth keeping on your radar. The remainder of the episode consists of Jonny's E3 wrap-up chats with Jared, Neal, Andrew, Justin, Guillaume, Alex, Kimberly, and TYP. Find out what these NWR staff members thought of E3 in the final moments of this year's show.

NEWS: WayForward: Ducktales Remastered Will Include Extreme Difficulty Mode and New Final Stage

Mount Vesuvius added as final stage.

In a recent interview with Kotaku, WayForward Technologies revealed some new details about DuckTales Remastered: the game will now include a new "extreme" difficulty mode as well as a new final stage that will take place on Mount Vesuvius.

They also said that the game includes "about 40%," new content, and that most of the changes included were made to expand the shorter segments of the game.

DuckTales Remastered will be available on the Wii U eShop later this year.

You can read our impressions of the game from the E3 show floor here.

IMPRESSIONS: Phineas and Ferb: Quest for Cool Stuff Impressions

Or in other words, the quest for originality.

Phineas and Ferb: Quest for Cool Stuff is a new hybrid action/adventure game currently in development by Majesco for 3DS, DS, Wii, and Wii U. Though the game is split between the adventure-game type "Exploration" mode, platforming sections where Phineas and Ferb control an upgradeable giant robot called the All-Terrain Transformatron Vehicle (A.T.T.), and stealth-platformer segments starring Perry the Platypus, the Wii U demo I played focused on the latter.

The Perry segments I played where I controlled Perry as he infiltrated Doofenshmirtz's lab (in order to stop evil schemes and whatnot), the platforming was very by the numbers. Jump the same way you have thousands of times before, platform the same way you have a thousand times before, collect items to upgrade your experience the same way you have a thousand times before, and stealth segments that everyone (except the child-focused audience) has probably seen before.

PREVIEW: Zumba Fitness: World Party Preview

ZumbU.

Zumba Fitness World Party is a new entry in the Zumba series coming in October to, among other platforms, the Wii U for the first time. For those out of the loop, the franchise carries a focus on fitness through dancing. While Xbox One and 360 offer camera options, the Wii and Wii U versions of the game are played via a belt with a Wii Remote attached to it that reads your movement.

The game gauges how successful the player is dancing by attempting to determine how accurate the players movements are and giving a star ranking. And as the player is more successful in their dancing, the environments (of which there are eight -- I saw a tropical one) become more interesting. The Wii versions appears to be practically flawless at registering movement, which makes sense given the number of opportunities Zumba has had to improve over the last several years. That said, the Wii and Wii U version appear to be identical, but offering the GamePad as an alternitive screen to view the game from.

IMPRESSIONS: Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze Impressions

We get our monkey paws on the new Donkey Kong Country for Wii U from Retro Studios. (Updated with some new off-screen video!)

Based on some hands-on time with the E3 demo, DKC: Tropical Freeze is a very straightforward but fun sequel to the popular Wii and 3DS title.

The basic gameplay and controls are very similar to DKC Returns when using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. You grab and jump with the buttons, and shake the Remote (or Nunchuk) to perform a roll, and the Kongs can team up to combine their powers. Diddy’s hover pack is back, as is DK’s ability to ride Diddy. If Diddy is on DK's back, the big guy can roll forward over very long distances as long as you keep waggling. Some demo stations at E3 featured off-TV play for single player, in which you control the game using more traditional button-based controls. Many fans will be happy to hear that when using the GamePad, you can perform a roll and pound by pushing a button (Y) — it controls pretty much as you would expect a DKC game to control. Unfortunately, I had to use the analog stick to move — there was no option to use the D-pad in the E3 demo, which felt a bit strange for a 2D platformer but certainly not enough to be a problem. Classic and Pros controllers were not supported in the E3 build, nor was the GamePad an option for the two-player stations; the Nintendo representative at the demo kiosk could not comment on whether the final game will support these options.

NEWS: Wii Party U Releasing This October, Wii Fit U December

According to Nintendo, Wii Party U will release this October with Wii Fit U just a couple of months behind in December. Originally Wii Party U was slated for a summer release, which makes it a month later than expected, and Wii Fit U was originally listed as "launch window."

You can check out our impressions from the E3 show floor of Wii Fit U here and Wii Party U here.

Although the Wii U version wasn’t available at E3, we were shown a presentation that utilized the PlayStation 4 and a lot of gameplay.

The demo took place in a highly accurate version of Chicago, complete with citizens, traffic, and an open world environment that allowed ample side-questing. The amount of detail that has gone into the environment was amazing. Every citizen has a basic biography assigned to them which you can view through a facial recognition feature. You can listen to conversations, read emails, and even hack into their phones and steal their money.

RADIO FREE NINTENDO: RFN at E3 2013: First-Party Impressions and Armature Studios Interview

The entire "away team" talks about Nintendo's main offerings, and Jonny talks to one of the highly qualified developers of the new Metroid-style Batman game for 3DS.

At the end of a very long first day, the E3 away team gathered at TYP's home to discuss the biggest games from Nintendo. As much as we were frustrated by Nintendo Direct early that morning, playing the games themselves is naturally a more satisfying and exciting experience. We did observe some pitfalls, though, and there are some overall evaluations of the lineup as well. Nevertheless, if you're lacking for positive perspectives on Nintendo at this year's show, our comments on Super Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Bayonetta 2, etc. will surely help.

PREVIEW: Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Blacklist Preview

We played co-op multiplayer Splinter Cell Blacklist at E3 on Xbox 360, which is also coming to Wii U.

The multiplayer level on display at E3 asked players to infiltrate a building without being spotted. We could take cover behind vehicles and other obstacles, and had a variety of gadgets at our disposal, such as radar vision and devices that can be used for reconnaissance or to distract enemies with noise. The environment provided obstacles for cover, and we could move amongst nearby cover locations with the press of a button to hide from snipers and other enemies. We could also climb on ledges to avoid land mines on the ground.

BLOG: Toppling the Nook Empire

Something must be done, we cannot put up with these injustices a moment longer.

As a veteran Animal Crossing player, I was ecstatic to pick up New Leaf. I can say this is definitely the best Animal Crossing yet, and I've spent countless hours mining the depths of its content. At the same time, I've also contemplated the game’s economy, and I've come to some shocking conclusions. What I'm about to say may disgust some of you, even cause some of you to recoil in horror at the veritable truth of these claims. But soldier on, dear villagers, because the truth must be told.

IMPRESSIONS: Batman: Arkham Origins Blackgate Impressions

The dudes who made Metroid Prime are now making a Metroid-inspired Batman game on 3DS. Sorry, I can't be subtle about such an awesome pairing.

We were pleasantly surprised to find that the 3DS version of this handheld Batman game is playable at E3. The demo takes place early in the game and is entirely outside in the city of Gotham. Apparently, most of the full game is set inside Blackgate prison, which will feature non-linear exploration and branching paths. Batman will find important upgrades along the way, while boosts to health and other basic attributes are hidden everywhere (much like missile expansions in Metroid). Though exciting, none of those elements were shown in the E3 demo.
