TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - July 25, 2024
« on: July 22, 2024, 04:00:00 AM »

Awful lot of games trying to glom off the lighting of a torch in Paris Friday afternoon (or for our American friends, Friday night)

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67976/nintendo-downloads-july-25-2024

Things we missed last week: A couple of Cosmic Fantasy releases, an early drop of Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus (originally scheduled for August), and a release of the original Rogue as ported by... Epyx. Sure. Football Cup was the Archives release.

The topline of the downloads seems to be focused on RPGs, with Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure* and the somewhat saner localization of Tokyo Xanadu eX+, plus at least in Japan a late Switch port of One Piece: Odyssey. Based on comments from my friends who played it on other platforms, it's the 3rd best ILCA game on Switch. Team17 is even getting in on the RPG act with Conscript.

For those looking to avoid leveling this week, there's adventure title The Star Named EOS and the actual release of Exophobia, or maybe you'd like to dip back into the World of Darkness with a new Werewolf: The Apocalypse game. And it's a... well, crap. At least there's a few track and field focused titles for the Olympics... though maybe those should be next week, and this week should be all of the swimming games.

TalkBack / SNK vs Capcom: SVC Chaos Coming To Switch Monday
« on: July 20, 2024, 02:53:02 PM »

This came from the SNK side so the bosses will be a right pain in the rear.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67900/snk-vs-capcom-svc-chaos-coming-to-switch-monday

Another crossover fighting game is coming to Switch very soon, and though it does run Capcom there's a different dance partner.

A version of 2003 arcade crossover fighter SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos - whose only prior release in North America was on the original Xbox 20 years ago - has been revealed at the EVO fighting game tournament in Las Vegas; it is available now on PC and will launch on Switch this coming Monday.

One of the last games produced by the original SNK, SVC Chaos features 36 characters from both of the contingent company libraries in a one-on-one format. Rollback netcode is expected to be included in the Switch version.

TalkBack / World Of Goo 2 Absorbs August 2 Release Date
« on: July 19, 2024, 04:01:47 PM »

"Goo"d news for this Friday.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67897/world-of-goo-2-absorbs-august-2-release-date

The much-hyped sequel to an early Nintendo indie hit is a couple of weeks from launch.

Tomorrow Corporation have announced that World of Goo 2 will release on Switch on August 2. The game's effective launch trailer will be made available next Friday.

Announced during the Geoff Keighley-hosted Winter Games Fest last year, it originally was announced for a May 23 Switch launch before being pushed back for additional polish. The game's page is not yet live on the Switch eShop.

36 hours of Tricolor Turf War sounds like the ninth layer of hell.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67895/splatoon-3-announces-apparent-final-splatfest-new-amiibo-sets

Splatoon 3 may be coming in for a landing, but it has one last big blowout before it goes into for fun mode.

The final three-way Splatfest event - posing the question of which is more important, Past / Present / Future, will start on September 12 at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT and run for 72 hours (instead of the normal 48). The three idol groups of the Splatoon series - the Squid Sisters, Off The Hook, and Deep Cut - will all pick sides for the show. Two years of updates and Splatfests were promised for Splatoon 3 when it was introduced.

The week before on September 5, Amiibo themed around the Squid Sisters and Off The Hook as they appear in the story modes and DLC for Splatoon 3.

Nintendo has produced a (kayfabe) interview with the three groups as well as aired the trailer for the event:

The only surprise here might be the release date.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67894/nintendo-to-release-modified-joy-con-charging-grip-that-supports-nes-controllers

If your Joy-Con charging grip is about to give up the ghost after seven years, Nintendo will have you covered in a few months.

A new version of the optional Switch accessory will be available on October 17 (the same day as Super Mario Party Jamboree). The new grip will maintain the USB support of the original, but can also adopt different positions (vertical or flat) and eliminates the side pieces present on the original model.

The removal of the side pieces allows the grip to also charge the NES controllers available for Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. The announcement coincides with today's release of Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition, as well as a sale on the controllers from Nintendo's online store.

TalkBack / EA Sports FC 25 Announced, Maintaining New Feature Parity
« on: July 18, 2024, 04:44:21 PM »

If you'd like to see what Argentina v Columbia looks like WITHOUT stadium invasion delays, here's your chance.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67892/ea-sports-fc-25-announced-maintaining-new-feature-parity

EA Sports is not letting off the gas for their second kick at Switch soccer without the mafia FIFA license.

EA Sports FC 25 has been announced for a September 27 kickoff on Switch (and all other active platforms), and it appears that this year's edition will not be a "Legacy" one for Switch. New features such as a 5v5 "Rush" mode, enhanced tactics, and new options for women's leagues in the Career mode are advertised for the game on Switch, though it will also require 31GB of storage regardless of acquisition method (physical or digital).

The game's cover athlete is English star Jude Bellingham, famous for scoring in added time for England in the round of 16 at the recent European championships which allowed his squad to eventually advance to the finals.

Welcome to Sakamoto's world.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67888/new-famicom-detective-club-announced-mystery-of-emio-the-smiling-man-launching-august-29

It's a red hot Famicom summer as a new set of meeting minutes from the Detective Club is coming.

Following a tease last week, Nintendo have announced Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club. The first original adventure in the series in this century, it will launch with a physical version.

Presumably due to themes, the North American release has an ESRB M rating.

The following contest, scheduled for one fall, is for the Nintendo World Championship!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67882/nintendo-downloads-july-18-2024

Things we missed last week: A double dose of Namco as Ace Combat 7 did come out for standard retail price, and also... I swear this is not one of those "fetish" games, but they also added Tinkle Pit into the Archives.

Speaking of the fetish room, let's make that particular wing of horny jail a bit more crowded (sorry Plumeria) and instead focus on the big releases this week. You could make an argument for two things - today's launch of Darkest Dungeon II or the Nintendo World Championships NES Edition launch on Thursday, both of which will leave me depressed for entirely different reasons. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles get back to their indie roots this week with a roguelike, seemingly the last genre they had to tackle following doing Metroidvania exploration platformer in 199-freaking-3, with Splintered Fate as well.

Other titles to watch for our coverage for this week: shadow based 3D platformer SCHiM which was in the same Indie World show as Splintered Fate, the exactly-what-it-says-on-the-tin Hot Lap Racing, and Dutch sci-fi thriller Deliver Us The Moon. The randomly expensive Steel Empire gets a surprisingly inexpensive crossover as well with Over Horizon, and your EggConsole game of the week is adventure title Seilane.

The Game Boy Advance library for Expansion Pack subscribers has picked up new titles - or at least titles brand new to the West.

An update tonight has added three titles in the Densetu no Starfy (The Legendary Starfy) series to the GBA library. The three games, released between 2002 and 2004 in Japan, were Tose-developed platformers with a focus on free movement, and the third game adds some multiplayer minigame support.

The only Starfy game to be localized previously was the second DS release, released in June 2009 in North America.

If this article is late next week, blame Pokemon Go Fest 2k24. If it's late in August, I got five and a game for two-handing an eShop developer.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67748/nintendo-downloads-july-11-2024

Things we missed last week: Ninja Emaki in the Archives, and "Utah Games Presents" which is actually games produced by a Master's program at the University of Utah. There was also a regular-price-US$99-but-97%-off version of AAA Clock, to which I will point out that if the publisher of that "game" is located where their name suggests, I will be in the area in August and there isn't a jury in that province that will convict me.

Although it seems like the big release of the week is the Switch version of Ace Combat 7, we don't have pricing outside Japan for it yet so we have to make do. That pretty much serves as the tail end of a highly Japan-centric week on the store even in NA, with a pair of Muv-Luv visual novels and a remake of Princess Maker 2 (awkward) in the hopper this week as the big costs, with Bubble Bobble III coming in as a budget option for those who care. Or you can spend as long in Soul Society as I do on this article each week with a free-to-play Bleach game.

If you feel like keeping it western, you can work through still simulator Moonshine Inc, or a neat pixel art adventure title whose profile has been on the site for over 4 years (I think it was shown at the last PAX East before the world went to hell) in Night Reverie.

Clearly not resting on their laurels today.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67745/nis-america-announces-date-for-ys-x-trails-through-daybreak-sequel-window

NIS America, not content to rest after today's release of The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak, have announced a pair of localizations of Falcom titles over the next year.

The first announcement of the day was a localization release date for Ys X: Nordics. The latest title in the shipwreck recovery simulating RPG franchise will release on October 25, about thirteen months after its Japanese launch.

Later, NISA also announced that The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II (aka "Kuro no Kiseki -CRIMSON SIN-" in Japan) would be localized for Switch launch in early 2025; although the second game in the current saga of the Trails series did come out on PlayStation consoles in Japan in September of 2022, this localized announcement is the first time a Switch version was ever announced.

This follows the launch of another Falcom remake, Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana by original localizers XSEED on Tuesday.

Now, do you want to take the chance?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67742/nintendo-switch-online-nes-library-adds-six-games-one-tire-fire

Nintendo has unleashed a major update to the NES library for Switch Online subscribers tonight of wildly varying quality.

  • Urban Champion (1984/86) is a rare foray into the 1v1 fighting genre by Nintendo, which was later adapted into arcades. It was previously re-released on Wii and Wii U Virtual Console, as well as being one of the six Nintendo published 3D Classics for 3DS - a baffling decision at the time that only became more baffling with time.
  • Golf (1985/86) was an early (black box) sports title for the Famicom/NES that was built into the firmware of the Switch for a time, to be unlocked by doing the "Directly to you" motion made famous by the game's programmer - Satoru Iwata - on the anniversary of their death (July 11).
  • Mach Rider (1985/86) is a vehicular combat game from Nintendo which includes a course creator, along with its racing-focused cousin Excitebike.
  • Donkey Kong Junior Math (1983/86) is, as the name implies, a math-based puzzle game staring the simian son of the original Donkey Kong.
  • Atlantis no Nazo (localized as "The Mystery of Atlantis", 1986) is a previously Japan-exclusive platformer from Sunsoft with a focus on exploration.
  • Cobra Triangle (1989) is the first of two Rare-developed titles in this update, an isometric shooter that takes place on motorboats and featuring a David Wise-penned soundtrack with game design by the Stamper brothers.
  • Solar Jetman (1990) is the other Rare-developed title, a multi-directional scrolling shooter originally intended to be a standalone title called "Iota" in which the objective is to find the pieces of a golden starship.

The large slate of NES games coincides with the release of Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition on July 18 (two weeks from tomorrow as of press time).

13

No surprise, they were responsible for the last one.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67738/third-ys-title-receives-new-remake-on-switch-next-year-from-xseed

One of the classic action RPG franchises is filling in another part of its history on Switch next year.

Ahead of this weekend's Anime Expo, XSEED have confirmed a Western release for Ys Memoire: The Oath In Felghana will be available next spring. The third game in the series was originally released on multiple platforms including the Super Nintendo with the subtitle "Wanderers from Ys" before being re-released in 2005 as "Ys: The Oath In Felghana". Presumably, this new version is for the 20th anniversary of that release.

XSEED originally published the 2005 remake as part of a long-running relationship with developer Nihon Falcom, before that shifted over to NIS America around the time of the Switch's launch. NISA have published the last three Ys sequels (the 8th through 10th games in the series) on Switch while DotEmu published a prequel in Ys Origins, and the first two Ys games have received faithful releases in the EggConsole line from D4 Enterprise.

With one exception, a week designed to let you slice through your backlog like it's a perfectly cooked fish fillet.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67675/nintendo-downloads-july-4-2024

Things we missed last week: Beyond Good and Evil 20th Anniversary launched for $19.99 US or equivalent, and CJ Gregg is currently performing The Jackal in the Archives (by way of Konami).

Last week had a near-record 66 releases in North America, and we're cutting that by more than half this week - at least going in, who knows what'll happen between now and Wednesday (for NA) or the end of the week (for everyone else). The major release which Jordan has briefed us on is The Legend of Heroes: Trails Through Daybreak as I am forced to rename my post-lottery win Twitch series / attempt to balance out all of the Kingdom Hearts in our VODs with an actual good long-running RPG series with Trails.

Apart from that... we have a follow-up to The Battle Cats Pop on Tuesday and that's it. Still, if you're lacking something to do for this JRPG July, you could do worse.

TalkBack / Atari 50 Expanding In Fall With 39 New Games
« on: June 25, 2024, 05:00:00 AM »

A full expansion about two years after the original game, but that's what happens when you can dance on a grave.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67666/atari-50-expanding-in-fall-with-39-new-games

Atari 50 has announced a major expansion this fall partially to celebrate the end of the "first console war".

Launching on October 25, the expansion will add two new "timelines" to the expansive collection, one focused on the general influence and style of Atari and one focused on the firm's early 1980s rivalry with the Intellivision - a brand that Atari recently acquired. The influence collection will contain 19 new games, while the Intellivision timeline will add 20 additional games for a total of 39. Both packages will be available as separate pieces of downloadable content for those who purchased the original game.

The expansion will also be part of a new physical release, with a standard edition for US$40 and a steelbook edition with art cards, miniature arcade marquees, and a replica business card for $50.

The rare fusion of the two active NSO 99s.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67665/f-zero-tetris-to-reach-198-in-latest-maximus-cup

The next Tetris 99 theme event is going to be hanging out with its younger brother.

A Maximus Cup for Tetris 99 will run this weekend starting on Friday at 3 a.m. ET and running until Tuesday morning at 2:59 a.m. ET. The theme for this event will be F-Zero 99, marking the first F-Zero game to get the Tetris 99 treatment and a rare time when one of the free-for-NSO games promotes another.

A preview of the theme, which unlocks upon scoring 100 points in the event, can be seen below.

With visual novels, "spooky" remakes, and Super (Game) Monkey Ball it's a busy end of quarter.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67619/nintendo-downloads-june-27-2024

Things we missed last week: Wait, they held a Nintendo Direct and only shadowdropped one game (Metal Slug Attack Reloaded) plus the NSO Bethesda's Fault app? Pretty sure that's a record. Also, Rastan Saga II: Mythological Boogaloo in the Archives.

The last week of the quarter is always a busy one, especially when a Nintendo game (Luigi's Mansion 2 HD) draws in, but there is some original software coming out as well. The presence of its DLC suggests that Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania may in fact have a claim to being the Sega Super Game, while the book club gets a couple of meetings with Radiant Tale: Fanfare (the fandisc for 2023's circus-themed romance that I still have to read through) and the latest true novel in the Type Moon universe (Tsukihime) finally coming west. Although it's not listed on the eShop, we can also expect the 20th (or 21st) anniversary edition of Beyond Good and Evil as well.

Less pricey but not any less important are the Switch port of Tchia, the beloved indie exploration game set around New Caledonia and new!Atari reviving Super Sprint with the new Neo Sprint. The EggConsole is getting out of the action/RPG area for a bit with Topple Zip, which has elements of the shooter and the racing game.

Between attempting to revive the cremated corpse of E3 and the whole Plumbers Don't Wear Ties thing they're on the tip of the iceberg.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67570/brand-new-games-revealed-in-annual-limited-run-games-update

More like the 21st anniversary edition, am I right?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67539/beyond-good-n-evil-20th-anniversary-edition-official-launching-next-week

After some false starts it appears Ubisoft is ready to bring back one of its cult hits.

Information has emerged confirming that Beyond Good and Evil will receive a "20th anniversary edition" release next week - June 25. A physical version is rumored to be announced at a Limited Run Games presentation which will air at 2 p.m. ET today.

The December 2003-released action adventure will receive enhanced graphics - though the Switch resolution and framerate are not available - and a remastered soundtrack. A sequel was originally announced in 2008, and later re-emerged in 2017 at Ubisoft's pre-E3 show meaning it is technically older than Metroid Prime 4.

TalkBack / Other News From The June 18 Nintendo Direct
« on: June 18, 2024, 08:13:00 AM »

We got updates, we got shadowdrops, and we got... nothing from Aspyr? Nice.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67508/other-news-from-the-june-18-nintendo-direct

Other news from the Nintendo Direct today:

Shadowdrops

  • The only brand new game of the Direct aside from the Mature NSO N64 app was Metal Slug Attack Reloaded, a tower defense take on the classic run-and-gun with 2 player online battles.
  • As inadvertently leaked and possibly spoiling this Drect's date in the process last week, a new update for Among Us has added new roles to the crew.
  • An update for Disney Illusion Island added "The Mystery in Monoth", in which players have to find clues in the area and solve a mystery in the epxloration platforming style.

Other Releases

  • Darkest Dungeon II, the sequel to the psychologically fraught dungeon crawler, was confirmed for Switch release on July 15.
  • One of the 3DS's quirkier franchies, The Denpa Men, will return in The New Denpa Men on July 22: the game is free to play and a Switch timed exclusive.
  • Plastic action title Funko Fusion will land September 13.
  • Akatoshi Kawazu's campaign to have blackmail material on every member of the Square Enix C-suite continues to pay dividends as Romancing SaGa 2 (1993, Super Famicom) will be remade for launch on October 24: the battle system will change from a turn-based system to a timing-based system as seen in Grandia or Child of Light.
  • After being notably absent from Ubisoft's presentation last week, Just Dance 2025 was announced for an October launch featuring Lady Gaga, Sia, and Ariana Grande among others on the soundtrack.
  • A Looney Tunes sports game - Wacky World of Sports - will introduce anvils and cartoon physics to basketball, soccer, golf, and tennis in the fall.
  • Marvelous announced a hybrid monster raising and farming RPG in Farmagia, launching on November 1 and featuring character designs from Fairy Tail artist Hiro Mashima.
  • Coincidentally, Koei Tecmo announced Fairy Tail 2, an action RPG that is set in the anime's final "Alvarez Empire" arc, launching this winter.
  • The Lego Horizon Adventure trailer from Summer Games Fest ran, with further expansion on the game's story, with only the "holiday" date.
  • Annapurna revealed another previously Sony-funded title for holiday in Stray, a game about a stray cat who has to find their way home.
  • Side-scrolling action RPG Mio: Memories in Orbit will bring the modifiable android to Switch in 2025.
  • Also due in 2025 is Phantom Brave: The Lost Hero, a sequel to the 2004 PlayStation 2 strategy RPG.

Look at it this way, the Switch Sports update means you can't do worse than Luka and Kyrie in the finals.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67504/new-modes-announced-for-nintendo-world-championships-and-nintendo-switch-sports

New modes were announced for a pair of Nintendo games today, one to come and one out for a couple of years.

Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition revealed a pair of new competition methods today in the Nintendo Direct. A "Survival" mode will see you race ghosts of seven other players in a knockout format, while "Legend" challenges involve completing more difficult or extended tasks. The example given for a Legend challenge is completing an "any%" speed run of Super Mario Bros.

Additionally, a new update was detailed for 2022's Nintendo Switch Sports. The free update this summer will add a 2v2 basketball option, with online play support.

After several rounds of killing game adventure, the Danganronpa team is moving into the strategy RPG realm.

Launching in early 2025, The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy stars a student forced to move into the titular school and fend off "school invaders" (monsters) for 100 in-game days. The defense takes the form of a strategy RPG, with the prep work serving as school exploration.

At least we no longer have to hear "when's mahvel".

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/67502/pair-of-capcom-collections-take-prosecution-for-a-ride-this-year

Capcom is continuing their trend of compilations on multiple platforms by filling in two major holes in today's Direct.

The sole collection with a confirmed date is the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection, which will release on September 6. The collection contains the two Ace Attorney spinoffs starring prosecuting attorney Miles Edgeworth, the second of which as a late DS game was not previously localized. A switch will allow for changing from the HD art to pixel art in the style of the DS.

The second collection due in "2024" was Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics, which includes seven games in both the belt-scrolling brawler and crossover fighting game genres. In addition to games such as Marvel vs Capcom 2 and X-Men: Children of the Atom, it will include the side-scrolling beat 'em up The Punisher for the first time outside Japan.
