Podcast Discussion / Episode 889: Fungi Have Sex
« on: August 25, 2024, 05:06:13 PM »

...unlike other, lazier kingdoms.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/68293/episode-889-fungi-have-sex

Our gaze has laid low another Nintendo mobile game, by reminding Nintendo that Pocket Camp is a thing that exists. (00:00:00) For this, we accept no blame.

Instead we have New Business! James thought trying out the latest[ish] Arcade Archives game would be a good idea. It turns out that The Final Round is truly an awful boxing game, despite it's infinitely better (and inaccurate) Japanese name: Hard Puncher: Bloodsoaked Glory (00:11:26). Guillaume has embraced his inner 80s Japanese businessman with Yakuza 0 (00:35:17). Greg got his hands on the first couple chapters of Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club, this year's least predictable game (00:40:31). Jon returns to hell with Diablo 2: Resurrected (00:52:23).

After a break, we LISTEN TO MAIL! This week we build a better Nintendo Museum and figure out what Nintendo character is a secret fertility god. You can fertilize our inbox by clicking here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 888: Waifus? More like "Why Not, Fus?"
« on: August 18, 2024, 04:28:16 PM »

It is a moral imperative that we milk these Wa...wait...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/68227/episode-888-waifus-more-like-why-not-fus

It's Triple-Eight, and for my next trick it's us reaping the rewards of last week's email exhortations. First up, we chart a path for a chastened Nintendo in the world of mobile software, and immorality (00:07:43). Then, we rely on Chibi-Robo to assassinate Sonic and his Shitty Friends (00:42:37). Lastly, it's Thank Goodness for hyper-local games (00:52:47). FEED THE BEAST!

After a break, we tackle some New Business. Greg's been talking about Mameda no Bakeru for a few weeks, and now we know it's coming to the west very soon (01:29:39). We also spent a little time on the demo of Shadow of the Ninja - Reborn (01:40:35). Guillaume has been trying out things to play, but struggling and instead talks about giving kids pornography in Yakuza 0 (01:47:26). Lastly, Jon has impressions of DOOM + DOOM 2 (01:58:30). That's a single game.

The flatulent horns really stand out with the reverb.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/68144/episode-887-i-listen-to-groosewave-you-havent-heard-of-it

This week we start the show with Listener Mail. Send something we've "never seen before" here. Does Toon Link have a future (00:09:51), our favorite iteration of the Zelda characters (00:36:14), and our IRL save point (01:19:12).

After a break, we go through some New Business. Greg's been playing Pinball Quest (01:43:28). We've been replaying the remaster of the remake RE (01:43:28). Guillaume is still exploring the 1980s Tokyo in Yakuza 0 (01:47:38) and he and James have been exploring 1980s Yorkshire in Thank Goodness You're Here (01:52:59). Lastly. James has been shifting the earth in Arranger (02:05:09).

Podcast Discussion / Episode 886: Price Shaggers
« on: August 04, 2024, 04:40:32 PM »

Everybody hates Kerry.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/68077/episode-886-price-shaggers

Oh! Thank goodness you're here, James and Gui have been playing Thank Goodness You're Here! (00:02:48) and wanted to tell you about it. That's right, James has new business. Jon is being a right tosser...in Street Fighter 6 (00:28:28). You know, grappling. Guillaume finally finished PowerSlave Exhumed and has now moved onto Turok: Dinosaur Hunter (00:55:46). Lastly, he has thoughts on Yakuza 0 (01:08:15).

After a break, and a counting adventure, the gang tackles a duo of Listener Mail. We advise people what to play (Bubsy 3D) on Switch, and what not (Chrono Trigger) (01:23:01) and regale our adoring listeners with tales of our favorite adaptions FROM video games (01:40:07). As always, you can send us your questions.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 885: We Stand Out as Exceptional
« on: July 28, 2024, 05:33:51 PM »

All two of us.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/67982/episode-885-we-stand-out-as-exceptional

This week we spend 15 minutes making you think we live in your skull, and also in sharing with you the latest business opportunities for Radio Free Nintendo. The Intelligence has never been so artificial.

The rest of the show is nouvelles affaires. Jon has a look at Epyx Rogue (00:16:45), which evolves into a larger chat on the dawn of gaming. Guillaume slaps everyone with Streets of Red (00:52:21) followed by shorter looks at River City Girls and Asterix and Obelix: Slap them All! XXL (01:02:32). Lastly, he shares some more thoughts on PowerSlave Exhumed. Greg wraps French New Business with an update on Mameda no Bakeru (01:15:41).

Email us your scams.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 884: Kirby In the Meat Dimension
« on: July 21, 2024, 07:04:49 PM »

It feels like... meat

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/67899/episode-884-kirby-in-the-meat-dimension

This week we have a New Business starter. Gui gives an update on PowerSlave Exhumed (00:01:26) before talking about mystery game The Case of the Golden Idol (00:07:21) - just note that it's got major issues on Switch. Greg gives a quick update on (00:29:05) Mameda no Bakeru before moving on to talk about Starfy on the NSO Expansion pack and Theathrythm Final Bar Line expansions.

After a break we take our turn at being BUSINESS BUSINESS with our own (00:48:31) Nintendo Investors' Q&A.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 883: No, No, No: THE Meg

Meg Ryan with huge teeth. Or in them.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/67881/episode-883-no-no-no-the-meg

This week we're all-in on Listener Mail. We make some licensed games (00:2:26), reboot Casstlevania (00:55:08) and Goemon (01:26:25), and explain why the NES isn't the worst (01:36:04).

Send us your investor Q&A here.

No idea.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/67747/episode-882-rushing-the-final-boss-hopped-up-on-opioids-and-pbr-in-my-2-star-pants

James is out for the start of the show celebrating FREEDOM. Largely by exploding things and drinking AMERICAN MADE.

Greg leads what is nominally a "New Business" episode. I say nominally because this RFN and RFN Stuff happens.

Guillaume has returned to Tears of the Kingdom (00:01:57), and made a run at the boss in a bit of an under-dressed state. He's also killing demons in Doom-like PowerSlave Exhumed (00:31:33), a late 90s shooter now on modern consoles. James returns here to disrupt everything, demanding Jon produce a book report on Theodore Rex, making this the third week in a row we've talked about a movie with talking dinosaurs living alongside modern humans. He then pivots to talking about Diablo IV (01:11:21), presumably on the first of twenty systems he will eventually buy this game on. Somewhere around here we took a break, but I don't remember, so lets say it was here. Afterwards, Greg gives impressions of Perfect Dark (01:18:28), now on the NSO Expansion Pack. We don't spend a ton of time on it, because we did a RetroActive way back when. Lastly, we talk about the latest additions to the NSO - which just happen to be a bunch of Rare games and some black box stragglers.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 881: Battle Pass? Hard Pass!
« on: July 04, 2024, 08:53:53 AM »

James's recovery from a bike accident caused the article to get delayed a few days.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/67730/episode-881-battle-pass-hard-pass

Note: Due to Audacity living up to its name, James's audio is rough for the second half.

A little late for the article, but here's what awaits in this week's episode of the Horace Hagiography: Guillaume has been fighting the entire solar system for everlasting peace in Mega Man V for Game Boy (via the newly-Mega'd Game Boy NSO app), then provides a report from the west coast of Canada on their arcade scene complete with pinball on the half-shell and Baby Pac-Man, before closing the book on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Jon is back on the Diablo IV grind, while Greg provides a bookend with a recent GBA library addition in his 391st playthrough of Metroid: Zero Mission. (We exaggerate. Barely.)

Listener Mail never really gets on the rails, with the first question being how in the hell the Baten Kaitos I & II HD Remaster ended up coming out on Steam with uncapped framerates and the ability to soft-lock on the pause screen. Then the show goes into a stream of injury-fueled "yes, and" as the crew tries to figure out a new name for The Legend of Zelda which somehow contains multiple references to Whoopi Goldberg's biggest mistake before casting various and sundry platform fighters. Obviously, Wilford Brimley is the Fox in the 80s action movie realm, given how busted his oatmeal spoon is.

If you think you can follow any of that, you're more than welcome to send your attempts in.

(00:02:44) New Business - Game Boy Mega Man V.(00:11:07) Arcade games: Baby Pac-Man, TMNT pinball.(00:19:18) The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.(00:32:50) Diablo 4.(00:44:21) Metroid: Zero Mission.(00:57:04) Listener Mail - Baten Kaitos I & II Remaster on Steam.(01:20:15) The Legend of Zelda needs a new name.(01:51:39) Imagine a worthy Smash Bros competitor.

Directly hunting hobbits.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/67594/episode-880-gollum-is-the-fourth-most-accomplished-hobbit

The mid-year Nintendo Direct is here, and RFN is here to give you...a delayed reaction.

36 segments, featuring over 40 games. With the whole RFN crew for the first time in a month, we dive deep into the announcements. We talk Metroid Prime 4, Mario & Luigi: Brothership, Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom, and the most important title - Ace Attorney Investigations Collection.

After a break we tackle two emails: Why doesn't Square Enix remake Chrono Trigger and has Nintendo "won" the "console wars." You can ask us unanswerable rhetoricals here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 879: Frequently Discussing Showponies
« on: June 16, 2024, 04:58:21 PM »

It's just what we do around here.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/67427/episode-879-frequently-discussing-showponies

Jon's back this week, but Gui is still out.

Not a lot to say about this week's show. James has left his mark on Google's AI Overviews, a "leaker" is the subject of an international investigation, and RFN "leaks" Nintendo's upcoming Direct. Remember, anything we're wrong about is just them changing it to spite us.

Gui's back next week, maybe send him a welcome back message.

Have a weird video.

12

Never again shall a disembodied, but enthusiastic, voice try to introduce some rogue-lite platformer about the power of love or some garbage by inflecting every sentence like its a question.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/67193/episode-875-we-put-tomonobu-itagaki-in-charge-of-nintendo-direct-production

James is back from his short career as a cast member, and resumes hosting duties for a jam-packed episode full of Nin... we spend ten minutes talking about hostage videos. I don't even know why I'm pretending.

At least for the first half, things are significantly less unhinged. New Business has Greg looking at Metroidvania maze game Animal Well. He also leads a discussion of the latest wave of Game Boy NSO titles: Mario Land is finally here, ruining our favorite joke, and also more Breakout is available. James has been over-exposed to Star Wars, and decided it was finally time to play Jedi: Survivor, a different type of Metroidvania. Jon and Gui are down the indie cat game hole, with Little Kitty, Big City. Lastly, Gui found the RPG he's been looking for in For a Vast Future.

After a break, its a single email: Sony now has two CEOs, why can't Nintendo? Why not three? Why not 32? Send your complaints here.

13

Consider this an announcement of the announcement.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/67115/episode-874-announcement-world-championships-switch-edition

James has the week off, so Jon takes over as host and infuses the proceedings with an unfamiliar level of discipline and professionalism. Greg and Gui are here as always, with our fourth chair occupied by Syrenne McNulty, who in turn brings her familiar lack of discipline and unprofessionalism. And we wouldn't have it any other way.

We start off discussing the announcement of the Switch 2...announcement, as well as the incoming Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition. New Business then sees Syrenne diving into Hades 2, Lorelei and the Laser Eyes, and a bevy of other hot takes. Gui discusses the Promenade demo, while Greg has spent some time with Extreme G. Lastly, Jon makes Syrenne squeal with glee by completing the base campaign of Final Fantasy XIV eleven years after the fact, still faster than he took to complete Chrono Trigger.

After the break it's reader mail about how Hollywood and video games have both slipped into boring AAA blockbuster mode. This of course leads us into a spicy discussion about Xbox, industry layoffs, and late stage capitalism. Revolution isn't just a codename for a console!

If you'd like to tell us how much better of a host Jon is, you can email us right here. Don't worry, James will never find out.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 873: Cobra is Rated R for Respectable
« on: May 05, 2024, 05:36:00 PM »

Take Cobra to your R Home.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/67074/episode-873-cobra-is-rated-r-for-respectable

Greg is back, and Guillaume has all the NFL Draft hot takes money can buy. Also we talk about a movie you might have never heard of: Cobra.

James does New Business on the Stories from Sol: The Gun-Dog trailer, because that's where things are going in his life. This is 30 minutes into the show and he's not even talking about something he played. What are we doing here? Well, what we're doing is having an existential crisis trying to follow along with Jon's impressions R-Type Final 3 Evolved, and its absolutely manic R Home to the R Museum and R Social Mixer.

SENDHELP

James thought he'd have all the idiocy firepower detailing how Limited Run Games not only decided to reissue old 3DO games, they did it on CD-Rs that 2/3 of 3DO units wont be able to read. We've really gone through the looking glass.

After a medically necessary break, Greg has played through Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna ~ The Golden Country, bringing him almost entirely up-to-date on the Xenoblade lore. Last, Gui has dropped Dropsy, and Crackdown. He is now a bit put off by Eiyuden Chronicles: Hundred Heroes.

As always: email us. We're lonely.

15

You just make me feel so safe.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/67016/episode-872-pack-me-like-one-of-your-faberge-girls

Greg is out this week for the 2024 World Association Kickball League Draft. James is both exhausted and sick, so his presence is theoretical at best. Jon is... Jon. So that leave Guillaume as the only person who can be defined as present and accounted for.

Topics covered this week are: pondering Ignatius Theophorus' destructive balls (00:00:00), Jon's old-new-old-new Business with Final Fantasy XIV and the Endwalker expansion (00:08:54). Guillaume is solving crimes in a world where crime does not exist as the titular Frog Detective (00:20:29). He's also on a quest to give the world a hug in Dropsy (00:26:16). Lastly, what's old is old again in Crackdown (00:39:17), a game I believe came out in 1782. James conclude New Business by colonizing exploring the horizons in Sagres (00:51:20).

After a break, a trio of Listener Mail are worked through as best as this wounded crew can. We start by becoming one with the Atari Jaguar controller (00:53:43). We then give into our special edition FOMO (01:03:02). Lastly we try to AI your Nintendo (01:19:00). Unable to just end the show, we instead indulge Syrenne's request for RFN's resident fashionistas to render a verdict on haute couture for Pokémon and children (01:26:38).

Greg will be back next week, so get your questions in now.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 871: My Hands and My Nose Are Clean

The elder doth protest too much, methinks.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/66936/episode-871-my-hands-and-my-nose-are-clean

This week we only talk about cocaine twice. I'm going to tag Horace Showpony accordingly. You use Benny Franks, he uses carrots. We are not the same.

Our primary focus this episode is on Wednesday's Indie World Showcase. We talk about a lot of games, but focus our attention on games with demos: Antonblast and Europa. Gui and James are both also playing games that were featured in the Japanese showcase: Sagres and The Exit 8. Every game shown is at least given a mention, but there are just too many cats, and not enough reverb to list them all here.

Traditional New Business follows the Indie World talk with impressions of Game Center CX Arino's Challenge 1 + 2 Replay from Greg, Super R-Type (from Jon), and the new Fallout tv series (from Guillaume).

And that's it! No Listener Mail this week. But next week? We'll be down Greg, so flood the inbox with your creative writing exercise.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 869: What Part of Dr. Mario?
« on: April 07, 2024, 05:21:00 PM »

It's just "a little bit," and I think that's a rude thing to say.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/66827/episode-869-what-part-of-dr-mario

This week, you emailed us. We said some things. Some of them were good. Some of them were dumb. We suggested five sequels to Disaster: Day of Crisis. None of it makes much sense, despite being asked if Nintendo is Disney, if numbers belong in titles, and if Zelda's evolving art style is unique. You can add to the Shrove Tuesday bonfire with your own questions.

After a break, the BUSINES IS NEW. But not "New" in the Nintendo sense. This isn't New New Business, or New New Business. It doesn't really work without the logo denoting where the Nintendo new is, versus the standard new applied to the "Business" part of our normally-opening segment.

Let's agree that New NEW Business would be a spectacular segment, where we talk about games that don't exist.

But, these games do exist, and we played them!

James isn't so sure his game should exist. He's been playing the new demo of SaGa: Emerald Beyond. Specifically, the Switch demo, as SquareEnix made CONSOLE EXCLUSIVE DEMOS. It's the least nonsense thing about this demo.

Greg is taking in some handheld retro gaming on Switch. He has some more thoughts on F-Zero Maximum Velocity (for Game Boy Advance) and on the collection Retro Game Challenge 1 + 2 Replay (for Nintendo DS).

Jon has fallen down a soccer hole with many iterations of FIFA, including 23 - the last one before EA got sick of paying a bunch of Europeans who never did anything in their life beyond grift. Jon embraces the grift, and rejects FC 24.

Lastly, Guillaume is still playing Mortal Kombat, this time 11. He's also got a small dose of Dr. Mario. But who's side is he on?

(00:07:58) New Business - Mario Golf (GBC) and other NSO games.
(00:12:16) F-Zero 99 and F-Zero Maximum Velocity.
(00:23:27) Titanfall 2.

Xbox's foray into your kitchen continues with the MOST POWERFUL BLENDER EVER.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/66709/episode-867-microsofts-big-dick-blender

This week we dive into the inbox. FOUR EMAILS are answered, sort of: why doesn't Nintendo explicitly name second-party partners on their games, are the Nintendo Direct fields lying fallow for good or ill, and what is the future of Sony and AAA games writ large?

You can put your inbox contributions here.

Because we spent so much time on business business business business we didn't have a lot of time for New Business. That means we turn the keys over to G+G, and boy did that car get plowed directly into the catch-wall. Guillaume tries to talk about A Little to the Left, but instead reveals his failure to understand addiction. He then tries to throw J+J off the trail by pivoting to Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen, which he grabbed just before the Wii Shop Channel died, but only exposed more questionable economic choices. Greg has spent a little bit more time with Splatoon 3 Side Order DLC, largely focused on a Virtual Boy reference, but devotes the vast majority of the time to Wii U savior New Super Luigi U.

This week we got a bunch of games: Worlds of Final Fantasy Maxima,  Ufouria: The Saga 2, Mortal Kombat 1 and 11, Splatoon 3: Side Order, and Unicorn Overlord. I'll let you guess who talked about what.

After the break we managed a paltry two emails: Mario Kart Cross and Nintendo Games too "off model" to release in 2024.

You can take us "off model" by sending us an email.

A lot of New Business to get through this week, so we're just going to do A RUNDOWN.

  • (00:02:18) Princess Peach: Showtime! - Greg, Guillaume, James
  • (00:20:28) Helldivers 2 - Jon
  • (00:44:19) Akira Toriyama's passing
  • (00:46:07) Balatro - James
  • (01:05:31) Unicorn Overlord demo - James
  • (01:25:51) Star Wars: Dark Forces - Guillaume
  • (01:31:08) Ufouria: The Saga 2 - Guillaume

Not a lot of Listener Mail, so please send it to the inbox. This week we look into why the team that was developing Switch emulator Yuzu folded under legal pressure from Nintendo so quickly.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 864: We're Getting Roody-Sued!
« on: March 03, 2024, 09:16:12 AM »

We're going to have to flee the country...all of them.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/66472/episode-864-were-getting-roody-sued

James is missing. We're concerned.

We're not actually concerned, because honestly...who cares?

Also, he's the one writing this article, so he was probably fine.

Also he shows up a few minutes after recording started, but I like to imagine that you are concerned.

And yes, that sentence contains first, second, and third person.

Technically, not true - I'm projecting my thoughts on "you" rather than writing from that perspective.

What were we talking about?

Right, New Business.

Greg kicks the show off with a look at the remake of Mario vs Donkey Kong. Then James returns and wants to turn RFN into Lethal Leap Year. Justice for The Assassination of Tex Ferguson['s arm] by the Coward Chad 2 Badd. Greg then resumes his, irrationally interrupted New Business with a look at Blast Corps, now on the Nintendo Switch Online service. James still hasn't got into Unicorn Overlord, because Trails to Azure literally refused to end. Instead he lead a conversation on the new Smash spirits that didn't happen and the Pokémon Presents that did. Jon dives into Cyberpunk 2077's DLC that "fixes" the game, and into the weirdness that is Kid Dracula on his very official copy. Lastly, Guillaume has impressions of two old games now on Switch: Arcade Archives: Mystic Warriors and Star Wars: Dark Forces.

Somehow we only answered a single email, yet again. This time, we explore what a world where "AAAA" games exist means for "BBBB" games. Also, we violate all of Mr. Johnson's recently-acquired IP.

You can send your C&D here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 863: Jaws 5: This Time It's Professional

Oft predicted, never foreseen.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/66367/episode-863-jaws-5-this-time-its-professional

It's Partner Direct season, and the RFN crew is here to breakdown all the news from Nintendo's... I assume people with sources will say "delayed" Direct. We got a few Microsoft Games and not just old ones from Rare. We also got some updates on known titles, and a bunch of unexpected sea creatures.

You know what's in the Direct, and if you don't - take a listen. We cover it all.

After a break, we handle some New Business clean-up. James is done with the Trails from Zero/to Azure combo. Guillaume is ready to render final verdict on Actraiser: Renaissance and has returned to Yoshi's Island. Greg has some thoughts on Mother 3's return to circulation in Japan. He's also completed Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, and begun Mario vs Donkey Kong. Lastly, Jon's investment in Ninja Five-O has gone up in smoke, thanks to Limited Run Games.

Send us your final verdicts on Actraiser: Renaissance here.

This podcast tastes weird.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/66286/episode-862-tasting-the-clown-ketchup

This week: Gui has Actraiser Renaissance, a remake of Actraiser that he isn't sure if he's recommending or not. James quizzes you on the state of the eShop (answer: poor). Jon is exploring the Mario Land games on Game Boy via his Analogue Pocket. Greg got to try out the "hidden" stages of F-Zero 99 and has detailed impressions of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown.

After the break, James delays the start of Listener Mail by accidentally starting a conversation on last week's Xbox news and last week's no Nintendo news. We then tackle two Listener Mail questions: incoherent and disjointed entries in entrenched series, and playing games while unwell.

You can make us unwell by sending your emails here.

Look forward to the first AAAAA Game, coming fourth quarter, 2020s.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/66228/episode-861-planet-of-the-apes-kountry-of-the-kongs

This week, I'm rushing to write the article, so buckle-up!

James starts the show by not talking about Legend of Heroes: Trails to Azure, or trying to at least. He then spends the majority of his time on Captain Toad, a port of a Wii U game that he has never played. Turns out its not a great game to marathon.

Greg has some early impressions of Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which is seemingly on sale already. He then gives thoughts on Yooka-Laylee, a 3D platformer from early in the Switch's life, featuring the work of a number of long-time Rare developers.

Gui and Jon opted to skip New Business, leaving time for LISTENER MAIL!
