"Minus an M, this Jordanian capital was once referred to as a miserable little pile of secrets." "What is Amman?"

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61168/nintendo-downloads-august-11-2022

Things we missed last week: Dig Dug (the OG) joined the Archives, and another NeoGeo Pocket Color game dropped in Mega Man: Battle & Fighters which is essentially the Mega Man 2D fighters made portable.

I didn't think this week would be all that busy, but I also thought that about last week and there were more shadowdrops than games listed on Sunday so who knows at this point. (This does seem to be the window where an Indie World would fall anyway.) The biggest games of the week are Cult of the Lamb - Devolver's sheep-based cult simulator which seems pretty on brand for them - and arcade compilation / simulation Arcade Paradise, though it got a bomb lobbed in late last week when it got announced that the game previously known as Shin Chan's Summer Vacation is getting localized.

Going through the release list, one other item stuck out: Sony Pictures is self-publishing something called "Jeopardy! PlayShow" which apparently lets you play classic episodes of the show (mostly ones hosted by the late, great Alex Trebek) to see if you COULD actually win from the fourth podium. Note that if you play off the Jeopardy Archive, you're a dink.

TalkBack / Tactics Ogre: Reborn Announced For Switch
« on: August 04, 2022, 03:18:48 AM »

I guess you could call this a concentric remake.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61131/tactics-ogre-reborn-announced-for-switch

One of the worst kept secrets in the industry has finally been made official by Square Enix.

After multiple trademark filings and a listing on the PlayStation store, SE has announced Tactics Ogre: Reborn - a remake of 2010's Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together, itself a remake of the 1995 Super Famicom RPG later released on the original PlayStation in North America - will release on November 11, 2022 on Switch.

The second title in the Ogre Battle series of strategy RPGs, Reborn combines traditional strategy/RPG elements with added features such as a tarot-based stat system.

Another game that will feature Jokers, just not the kind you're used to.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61129/all-elite-wrestling-licensed-game-coming-to-switch-published-by-thq-nordic

The first licensed professional wrestling game on Switch since 2017 has been announced.

A long-discussed game based on the new All Elite Wrestling (AEW) promotion, known as AEW Fight Forever has finally revealed its platforms which include Switch. No release date was given for the game, but the publisher was announced as THQ Nordic - in its original iteration, THQ published games based on the now-defunct World Championship Wrestling (1996 - 1998) and World Wrestling Entertainment (previously the World Wrestling Federation) from 1999 - 2012. Fight Forever will be developed by Yukes, who previously developed WWE games for THQ.

Match types in Fight Forever will include barbed wire death matches and AEW's trademark Casino Battle Royale (a battle royale where twenty competitors enter in timed groups of five based on card suits, then the final competitor enters alone as "the joker"). Tag team matches will also feature online co-op.

A gameplay showcase for AEW Fight Forever will air on August 12.

TalkBack / Pokemon Presents Unveils More Scarlet And Violet Details
« on: August 03, 2022, 05:33:00 AM »

How crystalline will Cryogonal get now?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61127/pokemon-presents-unveils-more-scarlet-and-violet-details

Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have revealed new Pokemon, variants, and a new battle element along with returning Sword and Shield features in the latest Pokemon Presents.

The new region, dubbed "Paldea" will be themed around a term at a Pokemon school with three elements of "independent study": one of which will be the traditional challenge of gyms, but the gyms can be challenged in any order (how levels will be set is not known). One of the gyms is Ice-typed.

A Paldean variant of Wooper (Poison/Ground types) was shown, along with the new Pokemon Fidough (a Fairy type) and Cetitan (Cetitan being used in the Ice gym battle). The version legendaries Koraidon and Miraidon will be the player's primary form of transport, with motorcycle, flight, and sailing functions.

The region does offer a regional battle gimmick known as "Terastal", in which Pokemon will gain a crystalline appearance which in certain forms can actually change the Pokemon's type (such as an Eevee directly becoming Water or Grass-typed without evolving to Vaporeon or Leafeon). Raid battles will return for Pokemon with different Terastal types, and a Pikachu that knows Fly and can Terastallize into a Flying type will be the game's traditional early purchase bonus.

In other news from the presentation: Pokemon Go and Unite will appear at the 2022 World Pokemon Championships in London, and the Sun and Moon Ultra Beasts will spawn in Pokemon Go on August 27 (10 am - 6 pm local time).

Considering gas is $7.30 a gallon if the News Editor had a car, is it any wonder North America is down?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61128/nintendo-releases-financial-results-for-first-quarter-of-2022-fiscal-year

The publicly-traded Nintendo released their official financial results for the April to June quarter a few hours ago (the first quarter of the company's fiscal year), with recession fears causing another company to report lower than the same time last year.

All financial indicators reported in yen, a rate of 133.103 yen to 1 US$ is used for comparison only.

Financial Indicators

Operating income: 101.647bn yen (~$763.671m US), down 15.1% year over year

Ordinary income: 166.723bn yen (~$1.253b US), up 29.6% - this is due to currency differences (weak Japanese yen)

Revenue: 307.460bn yen (~$2.31bn US), down 4.7%

Digital sales: 88bn yen (~$661.1m US), up 16%

Mobile revenue: 10.9bn yen (~$81.9m US), down 10.8% - notably, the planned closure of Dragalia Lost was announced nine days before the quarter began

Hardware Shipments

3.43m Switches - 1.52m OLED, 1.32 standard, 590,000 Lites - were shipped in Q3, for a new LTD total of 111.07m units (7.61m units required to pass the Game Boy / Game Boy Color). European shipments were actually up compared to the same quarter last year, though this was offset by precipitous drops in North America and Japan.

Software Highlights

Four titles shipped more than a million units in the quarter, with Nintendo Switch Sports (April 29) scoring an impressive 4.84m shipments in April - notably a $40 or equivalent game. Mario Strikers: Battle League (June 10) shipped 1.91m units. Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes (June 24) did not reach a million units shipped as the other Nintendo software launch, though they would only be reporting sales outside Japan (as the game is published by Koei Tecmo in Japan).

For previous releases, Kirby and the Forgotten Land shipped another 1.88m units in the quarter (new LTD 4.53m, the highest shipments since the original shipped 5.13m copies on the Game Boy) and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe tacked on another 1.49m shipments (new LTD 46.82m). The full Switch top 10 can be found here, with Animal Crossing: New Horizons looking to join the 40m unit club before the end of the year.

Other News

Nintendo reported no changes to the upcoming release schedule, with the Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp remake still TBA for Europe / Australia and not listed at all for Japan. There were also no changes to their projections for the fiscal year released in May.

Regarding the slowdown in hardware specifically, the company cited the ongoing semiconductor shortage (and related "delays in procurement"), but expects to ramp production back up through late summer and into autumn to set up for the holiday season. They will also "leverage appropriate means of shipment", suggesting the holiday season will see more air freight used to move systems from production to distribution where possible.

It's a quiet week, unless you're into narrative adventures.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61122/nintendo-downloads-august-4-2022

Things we missed last week: Roller Jammer is the Archives title.

It's not too busy a week - which after last week's 85 hours of JRPG is good for my free time if nothing else - though there are a few titles worth looking into. Frogun (which is also getting a Limited Run physical release) represents the 2D platformer, while 11-Bit (Children of Morta, This War of Mine) has a new release in South of the Circle, and we have a former Indie World game in Hindsight from Annapurna.

There's also a new Picross title coming which appears to be online multiplayer, but it's only listed for Japan for now.

Nobody tell Marik that he's not going to have a monopoly on an army of Steves.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61086/steve-and-alex-smash-amiibo-announced-for-september-9-launch

After an unexpected delay, we finally have a launch date for the delayed Steve and Alex Amiibo in the Smash line.

The blocky duo will launch on September 9 - the same day as Splatoon 3's launch. The two base characters were originally slated to launch alongside the Min-Min Amiibo (the first DLC of Smash Ultimate's second Fighters Pass) but was delayed for unannounced reasons.

As of now, there has been no indication on launch dates for the remaining fighters in the second pass (Sephiroth, Pyra/Mythra, Kazuya, Sora) nor if the last one will even happen.

The second DLC wave for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is about to take the green flag.

Launching on August 4, the pack will include a brand new course for the series - Sky-High Sundae - that will be added to Mario Kart Tour later. It will be joined in a "Turnip Cup" by Mario Circuit 3 (Super Mario Kart), Kalimari Desert (Mario Kart 64), and Sydney Sprint (Mario Kart Tour).

The Propeller Cup will add Waluigi Pinball (Mario Kart DS/7), Mushroom Gorge (Mario Kart Wii), Snow Land (Mario Kart: Super Circuit) and New York Minute (Tour).

The only store we ever ran sold branded merch as opposed to, y'know, copies of games we reviewed.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61031/nintendo-downloads-july-28-2022

Things we missed last week: Redout 2 (racing sequel) and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II (multiplayer RPG) dropped, and the Archives title was Taito's Chack'n Pop.

There's one game most people will really be feeling this week, as Xenoblade Chronicles 3 does a chain attack on your free time. However, that's just the lead for a big load of games; we don't have a price for Digimon Survive outside of Japan, but we get the third Azure Striiker Gunvolt game in the main series alongside recent Partner Showcase cameo Captain Velvet Meteor and horror title Madison. If you actually understand the Touhou universe... congrats I guess, but you also get platformer Koumajou Remilia: Scarlet Symphony.

A couple of older titles hit this week, as a modern take on Avenging Spirit (the old Jaleco platformer) is joined by a couple of Turrican compilations that when purchased in their totality become more than a normal game. Why. Meanwhile, Japan has a grip of games going into their summer holidays including a remake of Vanillaware's Grim Grimoire and the recently-announced-for-localization Anonymous;Code (the follow-up to Steins;Gate and Robotics;Notes).

TalkBack / Nintendo Switch Sports Update Coming July 26
« on: July 22, 2022, 05:11:00 AM »

Clearly the next step after S is to flip it on its side and make it infinite.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61029/nintendo-switch-sports-update-coming-july-26

A "summer" update for Nintendo Switch Sports is coming soon.

The free update will release July 26/27 (Tuesday night/Wednesday morning) and will include expanded support for the Leg Strap accessory in soccer matches (4v4 and 1v1), plus new volleyball moves. Post-update, volleyball will include new "Slide Attack" and "Rocket Serve" moves.

New tiers for the online leagues will be added, known as S Tier and ∞ Tier. It will also be possible to create rooms for matches outside of the friends list.

And a game that launched at least one lawsuit.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61028/kirbys-avalanche-headlines-new-additions-to-super-nes-and-nes-libraries-for-switch-online

Three more titles have been added to the Nintendo Switch Online NES and Super Nintendo libraries.

  • Kirby's Avalanche (1995), aka Kirby's Ghost Trap, is now available - a branded version of the Puyo Puyo puzzle games that was last released in 2007 on the Wii Virtual Console.
  • Fighter's History (1994) is a 2D fighting game from Data East, perhaps best known for being so similar to Street Fighter II that Capcom sued to attempt to block the game's sale (the lawsuit was unsuccessful).
  • Daiva Story 6: Imperial of Nirsartia is a strategy title originally released on the Famicom in 1986 and never localized. Originally published by Toshiba/EMI, the game is the sixth of seven games in a series that tells the same story from seven different perspectives.

TalkBack / TMNT Cowabunga Collection Delivers August 30 Release Date
« on: July 21, 2022, 08:03:22 AM »

Pizza time comes earlier than we thought.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61026/tmnt-cowabunga-collection-delivers-august-30-release-date

Although not originally dubbed so, 2022 has ended up with the Summer of Turtles.

Konami's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Cowabunga Collection, the compilation of pre-1995 TMNT games from 8/16 bit systems and arcades, has announced an August 30 release. The date was given in a new trailer released by IGN.

The collection follows the launch of TMNT: Shredder's Revenge on June 16.

The first update for Mario Strikers: Battle League has added a couple of fan-demanded characters - and in one case, highly demanded.

Launching on July 21 at 9 p.m. ET, the update will add Daisy and Shy Guy as playable characters, new gear ("Knight Gear") with a focus on strength and shooting, and the Desert Ruins stadium.

Two more updates are promised before the end of the year.

TalkBack / Dates Given For Closure Of 3DS And Wii U eShop Functions
« on: July 19, 2022, 03:16:29 AM »

The hammers will fall later in their respective months.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/61020/dates-given-for-closure-of-3ds-and-wii-u-eshop-functions

Nintendo has confirmed the final dates for adding funds and purchasing from the 3DS and Wii U eShops.

According to an update of the original Nintendo support article, eShop cards will no longer be available as a funding option directly on August 29, 2022 (Pacific time: the shutdown was announced for 1:30 p.m. JST on the 30th in Japan, which would technically mean 12:30 a.m. ET on the 30th if applicable). Purchases of software on the Wii U and 3DS stores - which would require adding funds on a linked Switch or via the Nintendo webstore with a linked Nintendo Network ID - will close on March 27, 2022 at 8 p.m. ET.

The only exception to this will be 2016's Fire Emblem Fates, which offers a version that forces the version purchase after chapter 6 of the game's story: it will be removed from the eShop a month prior on February 27. This is to allow for last-minute purchasers to reach the story point and buy route(s) before the eShop's closure including the download-only Revelations route.

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - July 21, 2022
« on: July 18, 2022, 04:00:00 AM »

You know, it IS technically possible to beat this week's big RPG before next week's drops.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/60995/nintendo-downloads-july-21-2022

Things we missed last week: Dragon Saber from Namco was the Archives game.

Time travel will be the order of the weekend next weekend as Live A Live - in its HD-2D remake glory - comes out on Switch Friday. If you're worried about the timing - specifically, "can I squeeze this in before Xenoblade Chronicles 3" - How Long To Beat has a "completionist" run of the game at 27 hours; as a demo exists with save carryover, that should be doable in a brisk weekend. If you're passing on a Shimomura soundtrack... good news, you can still get one via the Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium that includes a couple of Street Fighter titles in its number (along with multiple Darkstalkers titles if you bought the Capcom FIGHTING Collection from last month).

Indie World titles are also well features this week with fox-focused scrolling adventure Endling: Extinction Is Forever joining adventure Hazel Sky and hardcore shooter Bright Memory: Infinite alongside one of the more popular attempts to make some of Pokemon's billions of dollars in Coromon. Also, we have another take on "what if Kunio-Kun but in ancient Japan" with River City Saga: Three Kingdoms. And in speaking of the Warring States Era"... holy crap, that Nobunaga's Ambition game in Japan is expensive.

TalkBack / Nintendo Sales Panic: June 2022 US NPD Group Results
« on: July 15, 2022, 06:20:19 AM »

A big month for soccer and soldiers.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/60978/nintendo-sales-panic-june-2022-us-npd-group-results

The top of the hardware and software charts from the NPD Group seems unchanging, but there's a lot of action down below in this month's survey.

All data based on sales from May 29 - July 2 in dollars, unless noted otherwise. Digital sales for select third parties are included.

The Switch was the best selling console in the US by units in the period, and also maintained the lead for the first half of 2022. The PlayStation 5 was top of the charts in both categories based on revenue.

For software, Nintendo's two debuting games both made the top 20: Mario Strikers Battle League (June 10) placed 3rd in the period, while Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes (June 24) claimed 16th place. Third parties with new software - or in one case, expansions - also benefited in June with Monster Hunter Rise ascending to 13th (from 30th in May) thanks to the Sunbreak expansion, Sega's Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba just behind in 14th following its Switch launch, and Sonic Origins landing in 17th.

For catalogue software, Nintendo entries placed as follows: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe 6th, Nintendo Switch Sports 7th, Kirby and the Forgotten Land 8th, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate 15th, and Pokemon Legends: Arceus 18th. For third parties, LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga retained 2nd place in June (trailing only Elden Ring for the second successive month), MLB The Show 22 4th, Overwatch 5th (following an Overwatch 2 beta), and Minecraft placed 10th.

The top 10 selling games on Switch:

  1. Mario Strikers: Battle League
  2. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  3. Nintendo Switch Sports
  4. Kirby and the Forgotten Land
  5. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  6. Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes
  7. Pokemon Legends: Arceus
  8. LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga (WB Interactive)
  9. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  10. Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba (Sega)

TalkBack / MLB The Show 22 Switch Online Trial Announced
« on: July 14, 2022, 05:06:24 PM »

A good way to still get the baseball fix in during the All-Star break.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/60975/mlb-the-show-22-switch-online-trial-announced

Hot off the heels of Mario + Rabbids, the next Switch Online trial for North America will feature the boys of summer.

MLB The Show 22 will be available for free play for NSO subscribers tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern, with the trial ending on July 22 at 2:59 a.m. ET. (Note that the download will contain the most updated version of the game, which takes up 22.6GB of Switch memory.) During the trial period, the game will also be 50% off (US$29.99/C$39.99).

With the online trial and the game being included in Microsoft's GamePass subscription service, the only console platform where the Sony San Diego-developed game is not available with a subscription is Sony's; this is due to the game being published on Switch and the Xbox platforms by MLB Advanced Media.

A rare example of an "acqhire" from Nintendo, since they're going in-house.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/60954/nintendo-announces-acquisition-of-former-development-partner-dynamo-pictures

Nintendo has made a small acquisition in order to create an in-house visual content creator.

In a statement on the company's investor website released this morning (NA time), Nintendo announced the acquisition of Dynamo Pictures Inc.: when the deal closes (expected in October), the company will be renamed "Nintendo Pictures Co. Ltd." and focus on enhancing "the planning and production structure of visual content in the Nintendo group".

Dynamo's previous work with Nintendo included being a part of the "Project M" team for Metroid: Other M, as well as assisting with the Pikmin Short Movies that released alongside the original launch of Pikmin 3 in 2013 (2014 outside Japan). In recent years, they have focused on CG and modeling work for anime series.

TalkBack / Bayonetta 3 Finally Arrives October 28
« on: July 13, 2022, 05:13:00 AM »

Grand Platinum opening, grand Platinum closing.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/60951/bayonetta-3-finally-arrives-october-28

After a nearly five year wait, we finally have a date for the witch's Switch return.

A new trailer for Bayonetta 3 has confirmed the action game will finally launch on October 28, following its return in the general Nintendo Direct last September. Retail and digital preorders are both available now.

Several new characters are named in the trailer. The game received an M rating yesterday, along with a note of "ingame purchases".

Nintendo have confirmed that the original Bayonetta will receive a retail release on September 30 as well, and Bayo 3 will have a limited edition on the My Nintendo store and at "select retailers".

That's not very specific, though we can probably rule out the next couple of weeks.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/60949/kirbys-dream-buffet-new-multiplayer-kirby-game-revealed-for-summer-release

Although it won't have a Mouthful Mode, Kirby's next Switch adventure will still involve mass amounts of eating.

Kirby's Dream Buffet is a 4 player (local and online) competitive game in which players race around food-themed environments collecting food in order to make their Kirby as big as possible. It will be possible to use larger Kirby to knock other players off the course.

The game is slated for a "summer" release, and at least for North America will be available at retail according to a Nintendo press release.

UPDATE 1:21pm ET: Nintendo has clarified that the "available at retail" refers to prepaid code cards for the game (similar to other Nintendo games with purchasable codes), and the game will be considered eShop exclusive.

Acronymphomania is running wild this week. (That doesn't work for me, brother - HH)

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/60945/nintendo-downloads-july-14-2022

Things we missed last week: Apico, the beekeeping RPG, dropped at the end of the week.

The second of a couple of weeks before The Gauntlet 2022, it starts with a few interesting indie titles. Time on Frog Island is a good relaxation game, while there's a couple of smaller RPG entries with Pascal's Wager and XEL, or if you prefer quirky side-scrollers WayForward's Spidersaurs is coming over from Apple Arcade.

Dumb name of the weeks go to bad backronym Forged In Shadow Torch (FIST, geddit), while the sole game you might find in stores (in fact, it was in a local GameStop yesterday) comes in the DC Super Pets game. Which is probably still more enjoyable than any DC movie post-The Dark Knight.

The list of announced games may have been exhausted, but the N64 library for Switch Online's Expansion Pack has room for surprises.

Pokemon Puzzle League has been announced for a July 15 (likely night of the 14th Eastern time) release. The 2000 puzzle game is a branded version of Panel de Pon (present in the SNES library), with new gameplay options including a "3D" mode where the playfield is a cylinder. The original voice actors for the Pokemon animated series will be in their roles as well. This is the first time Pokemon Puzzle League has been available since the closure of the Wii shop, as its sole release previously was on the Wii Virtual Console.

As Puzzle League never originally released in Japan, the Japanese app will add the original N64 versions of Custom Robo (both games being unlocalized thus far).
