The rare time where "a cloud of rats" doesn't refer to a legal convention.

Focus Home Interactive has confirmed that players will not be flying blind into A Plague Tale: Requiem.

A streaming version of A Plague Tale: Innocence has been confirmed for Switch with the free trial download being available on July 5. The sequel "Requiem" was announced for 2022 launch via the same method earlier this week.

One of last year's big reveals has a smaller window

The Pokemon battle arena is only a few weeks out.

A trailer released by The Pokemon Company International has announced that the Switch version of Pokemon Unite will release in July, with the mobile versions to follow in September.

The Timi-developed ten player real time battle game has new footage at the end of an extended CG sequence in the trailer:

The game's website has also confirmed cross-progression and crossplay between the two versions.

TalkBack / Fatal Frame V Returning On Switch Later This Year
« on: June 15, 2021, 08:47:00 AM »

Seems like a good target for Halloween.

The newest Wii U refugee is one of its spookiest.

Fatal Frame V: Maiden of Black Water, originally released on Wii U in 2015, will come to Switch "later this year" according to the Nintendo Direct. No details were given about additional features, nor if the "demo and downloadable content purchase" plan from its original North American release in 2015 will be retained.

Although the original version was published by Nintendo, this re-release will be published by original series owners Koei Tecmo and will be available on all currently active platforms.

TalkBack / Sequel To Breath Of The Wild Coming In 2022
« on: June 15, 2021, 08:41:00 AM »

Did Link just jump through the ceiling?

The still-unnamed sequel to Breath of the Wild is going to take to the skies - next year.

The last item in today's Nintendo Direct was the first footage of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild's followup. Gameplay footage involved Link flying through the sky, using a flamethrower, and leaping into a ceiling.

At the end, a title card confirmed only a "2022" release date.

TalkBack / Advance Wars Returning In 1+2 Re-Boot Camp December 3
« on: June 15, 2021, 08:37:00 AM »

This wasn't the set of strategy remakes most expected from Intelligent Systems...

The Advance Wars series is returning after more than a decade.

Advance Wars 1+2 Re-Boot Camp is a remastered version of the original GBA Advance Wars as well as Advance Wars 2: Black Hole Rising. It will launch on Switch December 3 with preorders opening today.

Finally, our despair is over.

One of the most intense adventure series of the last decade is finally coming to Switch.

"Danganronpa Decadence" is a compilation of the three killing game-focused adventures released in the West between 2014 and 2017, plus an expanded version of the "Danganronpa S" board game featured in Danganronpa V3.

The four games will be sold in a pack later this year, and also individually on the eShop.

It's always Tokyo high school students.

Shin Megami Tensei V will form a pair of monster subjugation titles this fall.

As confirmed by a prior website link, SMT V will launch on November 12 with physical preorders on June 21. The game will continue to use a turn-based battle system but will feature full 3d world movement.

TalkBack / Metroid Dread Announced, Launching October 8
« on: June 15, 2021, 08:16:00 AM »

Finally, we've moved on from Fusion.

Metroid Prime 4 won't be the first Metroid on Switch.

Metroid Dread has been revealed as a side scrolling action game in which Samus uses the traditional wall climbing abilities and melee to fight off aliens and a white robot.

It will release on October 8, and will launch along a themed pair of Amiibo with Samus and the robot EMMI.

What - and we cannot emphasize this enough - the **** is up with that last one?

Limited Run Games held their annual tribute to the physical game today with multiple game reveals - both for new limited physical releases and brand new games.

New Games

  • BloodRayne Betrayal: First Bites is a 2D action platformer set in the nearly two-decade old vampire series, which will feature the vocal talents of Laura Bailey (Rayne) and Troy Baker (Kagan). Originally released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2011, the original game and remaster were both created by WayForward.
  • WayForward also announced a prequel and sequel for River City Girls: River City Girls Zero is an origin story for the girls, while River City Girls 2 is a sequel to the original 2019 release.
  • After being inadvertently leaked for Switch release by Nintendo a few months ago, Republique was announced as an Anniversary Edition. The originally episodic game will come in one package for Switch. (Nintendo World Report founder Billy Berghammer worked on the original game's crowdfunding.)
  • Following their releases of Night Trap and Double Switch, Limited Run's latest full-motion video revival is Plumbers Don't Wear Ties. Widely considered one of the worst video games ever created, it is perhaps the most infamous release on the 3D0 platform.

Known Games With New Physical Releases

Preorders will be opening throughout the next few months for the following previously released or announced Switch games:

  • Axiom Verge 2
  • Contra Anniversary Collection
  • Double Dragon and Kunio-Kun Retro Brawler Bundle
  • DUSK
  • Going Under
  • Haven
  • Huntdown
  • One Step From Eden
  • RetroMania Wrestling
  • RWBY: Grimm Eclipse
  • SkateBIRD
  • Strife: Veteran Edition
  • The Takeover
  • Zombies Ate My Neighbors + Ghoul Patrol

Huntdown is available for preorder now, and the Zombies+Ghoul Patrol pack will be live on Friday per a countdown on the company's website.

For Nintendo fans, it was exactly what was promised.

Capcom's summer showcase has detailed new announcements for the three promised games: Monster Hunter Stories 2, Monster Hunter Rise, and The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles.

For Stories 2, a new story trailer was shown and a demo similar to the original's was announced. The demo will release on June 25, and as in the original the demo's progress will carry through to the final game. Post launch content was also confirmed to be added, with the first item - the egg of a Monster Hunter Rise Palamute - being sent on July 15 (six days after launch).

Monster Hunter Rise laid out the 3.1 update (launching June 24), which will include some crossovers with Stories 2 as well as new event quests.

Finally, we had a new trailer for The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles which details the game's court system - which will include jury trials that literally have to tip "scales of justice".

TalkBack / Leaked Box Art Suggests New Super Monkey Ball Title?
« on: June 14, 2021, 01:08:13 PM »

It's got some elements of the GameCube original, heads up.

Boxart and screens for what appear to be a new Super Monkey are circulating around the internet.

Twitter user @NilsAhrDE first posted boxart for a Switch and PS5 version of what is called "Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania". Screenshots are posted as a reply.

NintendoLife video producer Jon Cartwright also confirmed the validity of the leak and advised features from the 2001 GameCube original are present in the game. At this time, Sega has not commented.

TalkBack / XSEED To Punch Into Switch With Knockout Home Fitness
« on: June 14, 2021, 05:42:11 AM »

Adding to the burgeoning "violent fitness game" genre.

XSEED is picking up a fitness game from Japan for this fall.

Knockout Home Fitness has been confirmed for a fall 2021 release. The exercise title mixes in martial arts and boxing as part of an exercise program, which can be focused on different goals and portions of the body (full body, upper body, lower body, abdominals). Four virtual trainers will also be available.

The game was originally released as "Finc Home Fitness" in October 2020 in Japan.

TalkBack / Nintendo Sales Panic: May 2021 US NPD Group Results
« on: June 14, 2021, 05:30:00 AM »

They say it takes a village.

US sales were incredibly tall in May, but Nintendo still held on for a hardware win in the US NPD sales survey.

All rankings based on dollar sales from May 2 - 29 unless indicated: Nintendo titles are not counted digitally but most third party titles are.

The Switch has now been the top selling console in the United States for 30 consecutive months, as it topped both the revenue and unit charts in May. No figures were quoted, aside from overall game hardware being up 5% overall (likely due to the presence of two new systems with higher selling prices). The Switch is likely down year-over-year.

For software, New Pokemon Snap was the top selling Nintendo title of the period and slipped from 3rd to 5th in the chart due to the addition of Resident Evil Village and Mass Effect Legendary Edition. Other Nintendo published titles in the top 20: Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (7th), Animal Crossing New Horizons (9th), Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (13th), Super Smash Bros Ultimate (14th), The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (19th), and Pokemon Sword/Shield (20th). Other Switch titles in the top 20: Mortal Kombat 11 (6th), Minecraft (10th), and Monster Hunter Rise (18th).

Nintendo's retail release of the month was Miitopia, which did not chart in the top 20 but did make the Switch top 10. Although it can't be determined, it is worth mentioning the game was a slightly reduced MSRP for Nintendo ($50). The top 10 list for Switch:

  1. New Pokemon Snap
  2. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  3. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  4. Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury
  5. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
  6. Monster Hunter Rise (Capcom)
  7. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
  8. Pokemon Sword/Shield
  9. Miitopia
  10. Super Mario Party

For once, Donald added fifty game pages on a weekend and a quarter of them end up in here.

Since apparently everyone is getting out of the way of Tuesday's Direct and the sale that's going to follow it, this is a positively New Year's list - in that it's got very little on it. Unless there's an absolute boatload of shadowdrops Tuesday. Or Sunday, given that Minute of Islands came out in between the writing of this piece and the publication.

I guess the big one in terms of price (if nothing else) is Bakumatsu Renka Shinsengumi, in that burgeoning "otome set in 1860s Japan" genre, or the moderately appealing 7 Years From Now. Bear's Restaurant should not be confused with the Bear and Breakfast game that got revealed this past weekend, either.

TalkBack / New Games And Release Dates Shown In Future Games Show
« on: June 13, 2021, 05:00:00 PM »

The last show of a high-octane weekend.

Sunday's final video presentation was the Future Games Show, which unveiled the following for Switch:

  • Eldest Souls, the action adventure title announced last year, received a release date of July 29.
  • Doug Cockle (Witcher 3) will be the narrator for side scrolling adventure RPG Tails of Iron, coming to Switch later this year.
  • A new stage (Tropical Resort Act 2) was shown for Sonic Colors Ultimate (September 7).
  • After an appearance at the PC Gaming Show, black-and-white swimming game Silt was confirmed for Switch release in early 2022. Notably, Silt's swimmer can possess sea life in order to escape tight spots.
  • Merge Games will publish DeathRun TV, a "game show roguelike" that rewards likes for kills. No release date was given, but the "pilot episode" can be played on Steam now.
  • A Tale of Paper (originally launched last October on PS4) is a puzzle platformer with a character made out paper who can transform itself by origami to solve puzzles. It will launch before the end of the year.
  • Gestalt: Steam and Cinder announced a Q4 2021 release: you can check out Neal's preview here
  • Dice based city builder Dice Legacy reiterated a summer 2021 launch.
  • The subversive side scroller Happy Game is set to launch in fall.
  • Minute of Islands, the side scrolling adventure mysteriously delayed back in March, is out on the eShop now.
  • Overcooked: All You Can Eat will receive a "Happy Birthday" update on August 9.
  • New footage was shown for OlliOlli World, which included plane shifting, grabs, and right-to-left skating.
  • An XSEED reel confirmed Akiba's Trip: Hellbound and Debriefed for July 22, Shadowverse: Champions Battle August 10, and Rune Factory 5 was delayed to "early 2022".
  • New footage and dev chat was shown for Two Point Campus.
  • Mystery adventure Conway: Disappearance at Dahliaview will be out this autumn.

Hey, we take 'em where we can get 'em.

Despite the name, there were actually a few Switch announcements at the 2021 PC Gaming Show.

  • Dodgeball Academia (published by Humble Bundle) is a game that combines dodgeball with RPG elements, including special throws and HP meters. It will be out in "2021".
  • Humble will also publish Next Space Rebels, a rocket building sim in which the goal is not only to get into space, but get all kinds of social media love for it. It's due in fall 2021.
  • A new trailer was shown for Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong, an RPG set in the World of Darkness tabletop universe with three vampires who have different abilities after being turned. It is slated for 2021: it was previously announced for Q1 of this year.
  • FAR: Changing Tides, the follow-up to FAR: Lone Sails (2019), was revealed: it is slated for "late 2021".
  • A Switch version of PC party game Lumberhill will be released in Q4: it's a high-speed construction game with both online co-op and PVP modes.

The follow-up to one of 2019's most disturbing titles is the rare PS5/XBSeries/Switch game.

One of the games announced at Microsoft's showcase today was later confirmed for Switch release along with the obligatory Xbox Series and PlayStation 5 release.

Publisher Focus Home Interactive have announced A Plague Tale: Requiem, the sequel to 2019 horror adventure A Plague Tale: Innocence, would release on Switch in 2022 by way of a cloud version. It was confirmed in the small print of the game's reveal trailer.

The original Plague Tale: Innocence (2019, PS4/XB1/PC) was developed by Asobo Interactive and stars a young woman named Amicia who has to guide her brother Hugo out of a city that has fallen victim to a plague of rats. Neither Amicia nor Hugo can fight traditionally, necessitating stealth to get through the areas.
