Thoughts on the Lack of Character Customization in Pokemon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire 3DS

by Becky Hollada - 10:08 am EST

Becky misses a cool feature introduced in Pokémon X and Y.

Now Pokémon X and Y has its fans and its critics, but arguably one of the best new features in the game was the ability for players to customize their own trainer. At first, I didn’t know what to think of it since my character’s appearance doesn’t make even the top fifty most important things... Read more...

Where are my trumpets?

As an addendum to my other article about why Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire are both great and not-so-great Pokémon games, I’ve decided to specify six things that I think could have made the 3DS remakes even better. What would you have liked to see in the new Pokémon games that didn’t end up getting in? Sound off below.

Smash Bros' Humble Australian Launch

by - 3:23 am EST
Discuss in talkback!

Not quite a graveyard Smash, but certainly not a Poké-Party.

Only a week has gone by since Australia saw the release of the New 3DS along with Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, and next up is the season's other most anticipated Nintendo release: Super Smash Bros. For Wii U. Since I missed the last launch, nothing could stop me from making this one! So off I went to the Nintendo Experience in Melbourne, the usual hangout for events like this.

Australia Parties for Pokémon

by Andrew Brown - 3:40 am EST
Discuss in talkback!

Andrew missed the launch party, but the country is still celebrating!

When the clock struck midnight on November 21st, Australia saw the simultaneous release of the two New 3DS models and both Pokémon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby versions to go with them. In the typical flashy style of Nintendo's launch parties, EB Games was the place to be to catch all the action.

The Great Amiibo Hunt WiiU

by Neal Ronaghan - 4:33 pm EST
Total comments: 13

Neal decided not to pre-order any Amiibo. Here's his report from the retail trenches as he tries to catch'em all.

When everyone was pre-ordering Amiibo a few months ago, I sat idly by. It wasn't that I didn't want the Nintendo figures; it was more that when I got them, I wanted to experience the thrill of going into a store and seeking them out. Instead of just waiting patiently for an Amazon package to arrive... Read more...

Amiibo: An Old-School Toy for a New World WiiU3DS

by Neal Ronaghan - 12:40 pm EST

After spending time with his very own Amiibo, here's what Neal thinks about them.

After having a trio of my own Amiibo with Super Smash Bros. on Wii U for the past week, I still haven’t really figured out how I feel about the concept. Amiibo mostly add up to just being Smash Bros. Tamagotchi that you feed equipment and customize so that way you can fight with them or against... Read more...

Ten Things I Want to See in Animal Crossing Wii U 3DS

NES games, 8-player visits, and more!

It feels like the Wii U version of Animal Crossing is due for an announcement. Thanks to Miyamoto’s recent Amiibo statements, in which he directly suggested implementation into a future Animal Crossing game, there’s very little doubt that the Wii U Animal Crossing is being developed right now.... Comfort Games in the Wake of Death 3DS

How Fantasy Life helped me in my time of need.

My grandfather, my last living grandparent, passed away a few weeks ago, less than two years after my grandmother passed away. It sucks. I'm not going into too much sappy detail other than my grandparents were fabulous, amazing people who will always be a part of my life. Instead, I'm going to focus on how video games helped me through coping with their untimely passings.

Nintendo Needs Apps 3DSWiiU

by Zack Kaplan - 11:39 am EST

Nintendo is lagging behind its competition with multimedia support. It's time for a change.

Whenever a Nintendo system launches, the only thing that truly concerns me is what games will I be able to play. After a while I crave more. That's when applications come in handy. With the 3DS and Wii U, apps have been few and far between, and if Nintendo wants to compete for sales, they should reach out and bring more to their platforms to add more value.

Mapping Out the Next Five Years of Pokemon 3DS

by Alex Culafi - 10:13 am EST

What will Pokemon be like in 2019? We have the answer.

If you haven’t noticed, Pokémon has more or less become an annual franchise. In North America at least, a main series Pokémon game (or set of main series games) has come out every year since 2009.

2009: Platinum

2010: HeartGold and SoulSilver

2011: Black and White

2012: Black 2 and White 2

Excitement for Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy Rising 3DS

by Neal Ronaghan - 7:04 am EDT

Why Neal is psyched to get the first Ace Attorney games on his 3DS this December.

The Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy is coming to 3DS on December 9 and despite the fact that I've played two of the three games already, I'm actually incredibly excited for this collection to come out.

One barrier for the Phoenix Wright series that I've discovered over the years is that sometimes... Read more...

Does Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS Have Enough Content? WiiU3DS

by Alex Culafi - 10:10 am EDT

With the Wii U version on the way, does the first handheld Smash Bros. have enough content to stay relevant?

Before writing this, I wasn’t sure how to approach the topic, or what to base the measure of “enough” on. Should I make my evaluation based on the Wii U version, on the series as a whole, or solely the 3DS version without giving consideration to the rest of the series? For the sake of fairness, I’m going to attempt to do all three.

Five Observations about the New Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Demo 3DS

by Alex Culafi - 7:48 am EDT

Bold colors and dope soundtrack and free movement, oh my!

The demo for Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire is now available in most territories and finally, yes, I have played it. The demo isn’t that crazy because it just features a bit of exploration and a handful of battles, but I still managed to glean some observations from our first taste of the upcoming Pokémon experience. Here are the five things that stuck out the most.

Five DLC Karts Mario Kart 8 Needs WiiU

Other karts that should appear in the upcoming DLC packs.

With the recent reveal of the Master Cycle, Link’s decked out horse bike, I began thinking of other karts/bikes that should make their way over to race with Mario and friends in the latest iteration of Mario Kart. The idea that some of Nintendo’s biggest franchises could share the screen in a... Read more...

On Disagreement and Vilification

by Scott Thompson - 11:57 am EDT

Those for and against GamerGate have created a tumultuous environment that encourages antagonism. It needs to stop.

My 2-year-old daughter is lying on her stomach, feet kicking gently back and forth in the air, watching Mario Kart 8 replays on the Wii U GamePad. Each time Mario drives over a ramp and deploys his glider, she excitedly yells “Mario fly!” and juts her hand out into the air. As she narrates Mario’s... Read more...

The Joys of the Super Smash Bros. 3DS National Tournament 3DS

Last weekend, Nintendo hosted a fascinating Super Smash Bros. for 3DS tourney in New York City.

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of watching a small-scale version of The Wizard live in person. Nintendo hosted a Super Smash Bros. for 3DS tournament at Nintendo World Store in New York City. It was totally radical.

For those who didn't keep up with it, here are the basics. Nintendo hosted... Read more...

Five Nintendo Crossover DLC Ideas

Link’s in Mario Kart. All bets are off. What else could happen?

I think it's safe to say that Nintendo is now swimming in the DLC pool. With Mario Kart 8 and Hyrule Warriors' ambitious post-release content plans, we now truly have Nintendo season passes. So, where do we go from here?

Here are some ideas that I think would be cool and (maybe) possible for recent or upcoming Nintendo games. Let us know what you think in the Talkback thread below.

10 Questions and Observations About the Duck Hunt Duo in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U WiiU3DS

by Alex Culafi - 5:00 pm EDT

I don't even know if I like playing as them but I can't stop playing as them.

Every time I play as the extremely fascinating Duck Hunt duo, I learn another quirk about the character, have one new question, or gain a new observation. In lieu of proper prose with a main point, I figured it would make more sense to cut to the chase and point out some of the numerous things I’ve wondered or noticed about these two.

Setting the Odds on Hyrule Warriors' DLC Characters WiiWiiUGC

by Neal Ronaghan - 10:29 am EDT

Check in with the bookie to see what the odds are that Tingle shows up in the Majora's Mask pack.

So we've heard about the upcoming Hyrule Warriors DLC that will add new characters, weapons, adventure maps, and more. We've even heard about one of the weapons: Epona. Yes, one of the first new weapons being added to the Zelda take on Dynasty Warriors is a damn horse. This furthers my theory of how Hyrule Warriors is so dumb and that's awesome.

The Problem with Nintendo of America's Limited Editions WiiU

by Justin Berube - 9:22 am EDT

Nintendo of America is upsetting fans and losing potential money in the process.

Back in May, we first heard that the Nintendo World Store in New York City would be exclusively selling a Limited Edition version of Mario Kart 8 in North America. This special game variant came with the anticipated Wii U racer and a statue of the most iconic weapon in the game: a Spiny Blue Shell.
