Justin shares his thoughts on how the game is doing 17 months later.
When Pokémon Go released in the summer of 2016 it turned into an international phenomenon. It seemed like I couldn't go anywhere without running into people, often large groups of them, playing the game. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if Pokémon Go happened to be the most simultaneously played video game of all time at its peak.

From a ringside seat, we report back on the experience of the latest Nintendo sporting event.
Last weekend, Nintendo held their second modern stab at the Nintendo World Championships in New York City. Some of the staff were on hand to watch it live and after a fun evening of excitement, laughs, and taking pictures for the site Twitter while leaning over a balcony, I’m here to lay out some of the neat things I took away from my first-ever live viewing of an eSports event (however weird and offbeat Nintendo does it).

The list is subject to change depending on solar flares and stuff, but here's one version of it.
I've spent the last week with the Super NES Classic. You can read about it here. The little SNES is adorable and filled with merriment and fun. Additionally, it's filled with 21 different games spanning the life of Nintendo's second home console. As of the days before the Super NES Classic is available to all, here's my personal ranking of all 21 games, as they are presented on the Super NES Classic.

After finishing Samus' latest journey, Neal ponders where it might fit in the 2D Metroid hierarchy.
As I’m writing this, I finished Metroid: Samus Returns several days ago and have messed around with harder difficulties while trying my best to 100% my initial save file. As you can read in my review, I adored Samus Returns and I think it’s a brilliant game and remake that is a worthy entry in... Read more...

Blink and you'll miss the chance to play Splatoon 2's new mode, as it's available less than half of the time.
Well that was a fun weekend of Splatoon 2. I got some Turf Wars in, dabbled in Ranked, and fell deeper in love with Salmon Run, the brand new horde-style mode. Now that the weekend is done and I head back to the weekday grind, I'm looking forward to coming home from work and sitting down with some... Read more...

Sorry guys, I need to check my notification tray. I will be right back.
The Nintendo Switch Online application is out. As the official way to interact during Splatoon 2 sessions, Nintendo had a lot riding on it. Would it be anything of note? After testing it for a while, I think that SplatNet 2 adds certain benefits but the same can't be said for its online voice chat functionality.

Nintendo of America says the venerable handheld has another full year ahead of it. Let’s see if they’re right.
Two different discussions emerged about the 3DS at this past E3. One, from Nintendo, was that the 3DS was a full part of their business for at least the next year, as proven by the Treehouse Live announcements of Metroid: Samus Returns and Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga + Bowser’s Minions. The... Read more...

We break down the 21-game lineup of the Super NES Classic.
In three months, we’ll all be walking into an open minefield trying to get a Super NES Classic as, even with the foresight of the supply issues of the NES Classic, the stock of this new mini console will likely be challenging to find on its September 29 launch. So, as we await the reckoning of this system’s launch, let’s break down the lineup.

A much-needed feature is faulty on Nintendo's premium console controller.
When people ask me what Nintendo's greatest gaming innovation is I often respond by mentioning the D-Pad. The simple input device, designed by the legendary Gunpei Yokoi, has made playing a large variety of games much easier. It’s even possible to use a D-Pad on portable devices without taking up... How Nintendo has been taking advantage of their brands.
Many gaming fans will look at Nintendo and see a major entertainment company that’s known for manufacturing gaming hardware and software. They’re not wrong, as these two areas are what the company considers their core business. However, there is more than the core business when it comes to Nintendo and their synergized strategy.

The E3 debut of the Switch will be very interesting.
There is no question the Switch has got off to a tremendous start. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has raised the open world genre to another level, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold the fastest of any in the series and we still have ARMS, Splatoon 2, and Super Mario: Odyssey to look forward to in 2017, just to name a few.

You've got some tough decisions ahead, this article can help you spend your eShop money.
The release of a new console recreates, for me, that feeling of excitement and anticipation that is normally reserved for Christmas morning. The countdown of how many sleeps are remaining and not getting sleep the night before are just a couple of the symptoms of new console fever. For most of us... Read more...

The NES Classic Edition was likely discontinued to make way for an SNES Classic, but Nintendo should aim higher.
Now that the sun has set on the NES Classic Edition, rumours of Nintendo’s next nostalgia project have begun to surface in the form of the SNES Classic. The appeal of the classic systems is that Nintendo wants consumers like myself to relive their past memories of joyfully playing Nintendo games... Read more...

Switch is a remarkable leap forward in the company’s portable gaming technology.
It’s been nearly thirty years since Nintendo brought portable gaming to the masses with Game Boy. For many adults, it was their first direct exposure to video games. Never before had video games been so public, yet so private, yet so easy to share. The battery-munching gadget reached older audiences,... Read more...

Do you sometimes think that many gaming genres have fallen into a rut? Thinking they're generally not as challenging as you'd like? Have you considered roguelikes? If you haven't you're missing out...
I may have been a little late to the roguelike party in the PC gaming space. Once I finally got a taste of it thanks to incredible indie titles like Rogue Legacy, Nuclear Throne, and of course The Binding Of Isaac, I found I couldn't get enough! Perhaps it is the old-school arcade gamer in me but... Read more...

The 3DS and the Switch are standing side-by-side in Nintendo’s plans, but for how long?
A lot of the discourse around the reveal and release of the Nintendo Switch has been focused on what exactly is the young system’s future legacy. Is the Switch a home console or a portable? Is it the successor to the Wii U? The 3DS? Both? Both sides have staked their claims in what they think Nintendo’s plans are, whether it’s using past precedent, reciting Nintendo’s own recent words, or because they believe in a one-console future.

Over the years the quality of what you could expect out of independent game studios has evolved greatly and we're in a sort of indie renaissance at the moment. Have you noticed? Here's a list of reasons why they matter
Writing this is a bit odd since I'm convinced that the vast majority of people who will read it will be the already converted. I'd imagine the next most likely people to read it would be those who are determined to dismiss it immediately, reading primarily for the purpose of scoffing at it to then... Read more...

Is it for the fame? The vast fortunes? The prestige? The accolades from an adoring public? What? We do this for free and generally nobody cares? Well why would we do it then, and what does it take? I'll speak for myself at least...
While I took a pretty substantial break in the middle of things, and stopped doing it for over a decade and change, I started writing reviews of various kinds probably almost 25 years ago. Back then I didn’t have enough money to just buy a ton of games so I was really into downloading game demos... Read more...

The changes made to the company's online presentations are strong. Now, it is time for advice.
Back when the Nintendo Directs first came on the scene, there was excitement filling the air. A more open Nintendo was both what we needed and what the company became under Satoru Iwata's leadership. Nintendo spoke to fans directly, started posting on more social media channels and showcased a lot... Read more...

Remember that time Nintendo launched a popular product and then immediately ceased production?
Nintendo has ceased production of the incredibly hard to find NES Classic, and I can't stop laughing. I should be mad at a company that made it very difficult to find a product that I absolutely wanted, but instead I'm so beyond incredulous that I can't be mad. Nintendo has made possibly the most Nintendo-like move of all time in ceasing production of probably its best-received product since the original Wii.
