Nintendo to Offer WiiWare Demos

Nintendo hopes the initiative will help WiiWare and DSiWare market grow.

At a recent Q&A session at an earnings briefing, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata confirmed to investors that they would begin a test program for WiiWare demos later this month.

According to Iwata, Nintendo hopes that this initiative will get more players to invest in WiiWare and DSiWare titles. The president admits that the current market for downloadable games on the Nintendo systems is small, filled with players who invest in games they already want. Iwata, however, believes that this isn’t necessarily the solution to the problem. The test will apparently only apply to certain titles.

Nintendo has yet to officially announce the program, and it is currently unknown whether or not it will be available in all regions.

THREE. YEARS. LATE.

About fucking time.  This capability was built-in from the beginning, but Nintendo wasn't using it/allowing it.

Now Nintendo is testing us too!? http://i38.tinypic.com/4zvvpg.jpg

Nintendo is testing us too!?

Welcome to 1995, Nintendo.

Still this is good news.  Better late than never.

vuduNovember 03, 2009

1995?  I don't seem to recall Sony offering downloadable demos for PlayStation games.  In fact, I don't seem to recall any sort of online service for the original PlayStation.

More like welcome to 2005.

StratosNovember 03, 2009

They had demo discs in 1995. And Nintendo could very easily have distributed discs of WiiWare demos in stores. Imagine that, packing in a demo disc with every points card including demos for WiiWare and VC titles. Then they could update the disc periodically so that people who buy the points are given some taste of what they could spend those points on.

I'm glad it is finally happening.

Now I get to play games I'm not going to buy, just like I did with the DS demos when I had one.

They made a demo disc with VC games, it is called Super Smash Brothers Brawl.

vuduNovember 03, 2009

Why would they make demo discs of WiiWare games?  If you're able to download the game you'd obviously able to download the demo!

To get new people to try them. They could give them out at stores with instructions on how to go online with your Wii so that people will get connected and buy the full games.

Maybe send out a collection of WW demos with new Wii SKUs.

Yes, this. If WiiWare demos came with the Wii then maybe it would encourage people to connect it to the Internet. They could also give a ticket for one free download of a Virtual Console game as another incentive.

THREE. YEARS. LATE.

Technically, its ONE year late. This is about WiiWare games, not Wii games in general. The WiiWare service has been around for a year now.

TJ SpykeNovember 03, 2009

YES!!!

There have been a lot of WiiWare games then interest m, but I don't buy them unless I am sure I will like them. Once you buy a WiiWare game you are stuck with it whether you like the game or not, and you have no way to sell it.

broodwarsNovember 03, 2009

About time, Nintendo.  Nice of you to finally join the rest of the Industry.

AVNovember 03, 2009

remember when Dr. Mario gave out a demo to people you knew. I hope it's not that system of demo

I'll take that over the current demo system...which is nothing.

I can virtually guarantee you that it's not going to work like XBLA demos, where the demo is the full game with restrictions and buying it just gets you the unlock code; Nintendo is too afraid of piracy to do that. They'll be two separate downloads.

Most WiiWare games cost between $5 and $10.  That's a relatively low cost.  If you buy a retail game--even a used copy--and then sell it back because you don't like it it's going to cost you more than you would lose by purchasing a WiiWare title that you didn't like.

I was referring to the old Playstation demo discs.  Nintendo has been super stingy with demos this whole time.  So by finally embracing them they're catching up to what has been an industry standard for almost 15 years!

D_AverageNovember 03, 2009

Awesome. Now I will must begin a season of prayer and fasting that they add retail demos as well.  Need to test Spyborgs before I just take the plunge as #501.

Ah, the PS demo discs. A poor mans fantasy fulfilled.

Those were a great idea, well, at least in selling magazines I would normally never buy.  I think thats how I discovered Day of the Tentacle.

Day of the Tentacle/Maniac Mansion need to come to WiiWare and VC. Maybe after Monkey Island we'll see yet another classic LucasArts license picked up and resuscitated.

There are also rental services. My point is that I shouldn't have to buy a game just to see if I would like it, especially if I will be stuck with a game if it turns out to be crap. For those of us with a tight budget, even $10 is a lot to basically gamble on the game's quality.

As for demo discs, the demo of Psychonauts in Official Xbox Magazine convinced me to buy the game, so I was always disappointed Nintendo never did them. I guarantee that subscriptions to Nintendo Power would have increased if they included GameCube/Wii demo discs with it.

Pfft, I have 5.25" diskettes that came with magazines. Welcome to the 80s, console gamer!

Here's an epic bump since Nintendo put up some more demos out of nowhere.  One is a game for those of you with a balance board and zapper.  It's called Horizon Riders.  I have neither and the game played kind of crappy with just a wiimote.  Another game is Fast - Racing League.  I already bought it some time ago.  It's kinda like Wipeout without weapons, or the newer F-Zero games without taking down other cars.  It's pretty and plays well, but I didn't find it too exciting.

The other is a game called 3D Pixel Racing and I quite enjoyed it.  It's motion controls only and it felt really over sensitive at first.  But after a lap or two (and used my Mario Kart wheel shell for the first time ever) it was really fun.  For only $5 I would've already picked it up if I didn't just buy a hand full of games on WiiWare/VC.  I have points left over though so I'll probably get it sooner or later.

I've noticed it has got some really bad reviews.  But from what I've read they all seem to have problems with the controls.  I wonder if they're trying to play like ExciteTruck with the dpad and button facing the ceiling as opposed to Mario Kart where the dpad and buttons face you.  Because that's how I tried playing at first and it was really bad.  But like I said switching to the correct position and even using that wheel shell really helps.

Has anyone else tried this game out?

I played the 3D Pixel Racing demo. The presentation reminded me of Legos except without the charm, so I couldn't get past how terrible the game looked to really notice what it controlled like.
