There won't be a third Pokémon game released after the first two incarnations.

Pokémon Black and White was unveiled recently to the European press. Spanish site Meristation was able to talk to some of the people responsible for the fifth generation of Pokémon. When asked if there would be a Pokémon Gray after the release of Pokémon Black and White, they mentioned that they were done with Pokémon Black and White and that players shouldn't expect another game.

"No, not at all. We are done with this generation with Pokémon Black and White Edition", said Mana Ibe, designer on Pokémon Black/White.

In addition, they were asked why they released the game so close to the launch of the 3DS. Their response was "It was the right time to launch a new game with lots of innovations. While the 3DS is a great system, these games were created with the DS in mind".

I hate the way Americns spell grey.

farnhamFebruary 14, 2011

it makes sense as BW is so close to the 3DS launch

but somehow i think that nintendo still will release a special edition of BW

Normally I am not so cynical when it comes to Nintendo.  But I do not believe this one.

I'm confident there will be a Pokemon "Gray" of some kind.  I wouldn't be surprised if it is 3DS exclusive however.

Not sure on the details... these are just the hunches I get.

Releasing Gray as a DS game doesn't make much sense, and making it for the 3DS would require a lot of work to be at all worthwhile, so I'm inclined to believe this. Based on that, I'd also expect to see the next mainline Pokemon release, a 3DS exclusive, to come sooner than usual; the standard seems to be about a 3 year gap between major releases, but I wouldn't be surprised to see the first 3DS installments even as soon as late next year.

I hate the way Europeans claim to be the most polite people in the world and then go around trashing Americans whenever possible. Grow up please.

EDIT: By the way it's 'Americans'. If you're going to be annoyed by how something is spelt elsewhere you might want to learn to spell yourself.

I share your "hunch" and raise you this......

In title, no "Gray/Grey"........, 3DS exclusive, Black+White 3D........, constitutes as "same" generation, using same assets, slight iteration on story by allowing "simul-play"(play both story arch's with slight cross interaction and the ability to combine rosters after main story)

........sorry..... i'm just dreaming now.......

SilverQuilavaFebruary 14, 2011

Even though the designer said they were done with this generation, that doesn't exactly mean they were done with pokemon games. I would love to see something like being able to go to all the regions in one game. Remember how in gold and silver you could battle the kanto gym leaders after beating the pokemon league? It would be cool to like keep going with each region and each gym leader get slightly harder. Also, beating the other Pokemon leagues would be cool too like the Ever Grande City League in Hoenn and the Sinnoh league. It would be an enormous game, but I'm just saying I would play a game like that.

I've said my piece here, so I'll just say that expecting a company to discuss the director's cut at the original's launch is the height of folly.

That's what Fox did with Avatar. They admitted that the first DVD release would be a turd (not in those words of coarse, LOL) and be just the barebones movie, the real version would be released months later and include stuff that people expect from movies for the last 10 years. Yet somehow the turd version still sold millions.

Nintendo also said they wouldn't make a sequel to Wii Sports, so I'll believe it when I don't see it.

Nintendo saying "No" to a Pokemon Gray is like saying "No" to money.

Oh wait.... it is.

And this is relevant to the discussion...how?

Regarding this news story, I too don't believe that this will be end of Black and White, but I think its going to be far more complicated than just updating the main game. Like its been mentioned already, with the 3DS out there's the temptation of making an updated game for the 3DS, but then why not just make a real game for the 3DS instead?

I hate LOVE it when someone takes an assumption and then goes into a rant about it but they were wrong in the first place and therefore lose the point. Yeah I just forgot to include the second a in American, how disrespectful. Must be my innate European blood kicking in.

ThePermFebruary 15, 2011

I'm an American and I've always spelled it grey. Grey is one of the few words in the dictionary with two spellings. The other one being Disc/Disk/Disque
I spell square disks with a K and round ones with a C. This discussion has come up many times before in the forums...mostly started by former forumer Grey Ninja whose Canadian. This is one of those words thats spelling difference is not attributed to being caused by transatlantic split. Also and even then, things change and different spellings can create different meanings. Its become common to spell a movie theater theater, and a play performance theatre theatre.

Brilliant. Interestingly, Bleach187 uses the (predominately) British spelling of the past tense of spell.

Edit: Go discussion re: predominate vs predominant

Oh.

Derails for the win!

TJ SpykeFebruary 15, 2011

If Nintendo did make a Pokemon Gray, I wonder if they would use that spelling? They used the name "Game Boy Color" in every region (although I still occasionally see someone incorrectly write "Game Boy Colour" just because that is how they spell the word in their country). I don't think Nintendo plans to do this because I think they want people to move onto the 3DS as soon as possible. I know they could put a sticker or something on the box that says "Compatible with 3DS", but that would not encourage anyone with a DS to upgrade.

CaterkillerMatthew Osborne, Contributing WriterFebruary 15, 2011

Can we get to the real topic at hand? As a Pokemon player who tries to raise pokemon competively this means there will be no Dream World Unova Pokemon.  I can only assume this Wii title will contain them, as the data for them exist in black and white, but the sprites don't in the Dream World. At least the dream world that we have up and running now.

What ever the case I sure hope there is no greay. Yellow I was all for, crystal didn't care enough, emerald only did it because of the breeding updates(yeah I know) but I am not in the mood for just more moves and another nonstory.

OK guys, break it up. This is a thread about Pokemon, and not a place to insult or mock one another over spelling.

I spell square disks with a K and round ones with a C.

As far as I'm aware, the difference in spelling refers to the type that it is. A disk with a K stores data magnetically (3 1/2 floppy, hard disk drive, etc), and a disc with a C stores data to be read optically (CD > compact disc, DVD > digital video/versatile disc, etc).

TJ SpykeFebruary 19, 2011

In a interview with GameTrailers, Black/White director Junichi Masuda says he never said there would not be a third version and he was surprised to hear about the rumor. That is not confirmation that there will be a third version, but it seems to move it from "No" to "Maybe" IMO since he is higher up on the corporate ladder.

COLOUR.

Anyway, this is a shocker to me. This will be the first core Pokemon game to NOT have a 3rd "ultimate" edition. Which I'd surely have purchased or have sent to me for review purposes.

CaterkillerMatthew Osborne, Contributing WriterFebruary 20, 2011

Here is the interview TJ SPyke was talking about. http://www.gametrailers.com/video/overview-interview-pokemon-black/710753

To be honest I do not want a Gray version. Just give me a Wii version with a story and stadium mode and all the DW Pokemon. Along with awesome music in the line of Pokemon Colesseum's story mode.

subhasFebruary 21, 2011

Well, didn't Nintendo say they were developing a Pokemon game for the 3DS? So, they might release a side game, like mystery dungeon, or a core game like "Gray/Grey"...

Hidden YoJune 12, 2011

Perhaps he was telling the truth while telling a lie. Executives are trained to do that. There could be a Pokemon Gray/Grey version, only featuring GenVI Pokemon as well as GenV Pokemon. Or, as the did with HG SS they could remaster it later on 3DS. My last hunch is that they will do something only Nintendo would think of. They did it once before. They will pull a Starfox. Wait until a new system is going to be released. (Step 1 complete: They released Black and White 21 days before the 3DS; It took 38 days for Starfox) Release the new version of game on the older system, wait only a couple of weeks, and BAM! Out on the new system. See, this is smart because kids, the main consumer of games, will beg and beg to get a game, then get the new system to play the newest game. Pokemon really carries the Handheld section of Nintendo, so they would make much more money by switching Gray/Grey onto 3DS. That doesn't force anyone to buy a 3DS, just save up for it. Basically, they make much more money by switching the carrier of Handheld Nintendo to 3DS, coaxing the consumer to buy they new system and the new game, they also can buy the more expensive 3DS games. Or he could be completely BSing  like they did for HG/DP/Pt.

I believe that everybody who has to make fun of another country to feel better about themselves/their country is highly unintelligent.  It's rude, and whatever you make fun of is not as bad as showing that you are a rude person.  BOTH of you are wrong, and it needs to stop.  Taking this to a length, you are are being racist.  Racism is terrible, and is a huge problem worldwide.  I'm not writing this because I want you to feel stupid, I'm writing this to educate you and to make sure nobody else will have to be offended by you.  Bottom line, you need to stop.  This is a freaking Pokemon post.

lv100swampertAugust 09, 2011

Europe sucks(:

AdrockAugust 09, 2011

I wonder what the next Pokemon game is going to be called.

And I believe this no grey/gray version announcement. Nintendo needs to focus on 3DS.

BlackNMild2k1August 09, 2011

Why couldn't Grey have been the 3D upgraded visuals versions of B&W.

Nintendo wants to boost sales? Then make all the pokefans rush out and buy a 3DS to get the ultimate version of B&W.

TJ SpykeAugust 09, 2011

I have to agree, I do think a lot of kids would want the 3DS for it.

nick.berry82December 11, 2011

if they do make a pokemon gray it wont be for the 3ds. think about it, if they made it for the 3ds and the 3ds only theyd lose money because a lot of people dont have one. like me lol i still have the ds lite.

TJ SpykeDecember 11, 2011

But the 3DS has picked up its stride, it's even sold more systems than the DS had at this same point in its lifespan.

BlackNMild2k1December 11, 2011

and you will buy a 3DS for it, so that would kinda be the point of doing it.

andrews87January 03, 2012

If they do release a 3rd game to this series, grey (lol) would be good and would be nice to mix in some older regions & pokemon as I was disapponted in b+w cos the game ended to soon for my liking and there just didnt seem like alot to do or was that interested, if they followed some of the older gens by adding a boat or a plane or something to go back a game I wouldnt have minded then if they didnt release a 3rd but just seems like there wasnt enough effort to b+w (tho just my opinion) and as much as I like (and own) the 3ds I would prefer if they didnt carry pokemon onto the 3ds cos then they will work to hard to make the 3d right and f*** up the game itself, obviously you cant change pokemon onto another console even if its the same but only in 3d I dont mind side games like the new super rumble or whatever its called on the 3ds, they dont really interest me but anyway I'd like to see alot more of pokemon on the ds and to carry on the adventure in new and old regions because its a great game and Im sure people will agree with me when I say if I ever have kids I will pass my games along the line

Aprivenbark387February 03, 2012

Are you all ignorant? Releasing an exclusive version on the 3DS is a money killer. Nintendo isn't stupid. Kids are the ones with the 3DS. To me it's a waste of money and a headache. I have a perfectly fine DS Lite that I love and I'd be thrilled if they released a Gray/Grey however the hell you spell it. As for them releasing other pokemon games I doubt they wouldn't. Next to Mario it's one of Nintendo's biggest money makers and the whole reason handhelds are so popular. The mystery dungeon games suck and so do the PokeRanger games. Good ole regular Pokemon is where it's at. I own Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum and always enjoyed the stuff the 3rd games offered.

TJ SpykeFebruary 03, 2012

I can tell I won't be getting along with you.

@ Andrews87
Black and White was a much needed step in the right direction as far as story and presentation was concerned that's for sure. I could see where you feel like you've got nothing left to do. But I've got over 540 hours strong clocked in my game and it's only going to climb the moment I figure out who I want to train next. Did you just catch em all and that was it? Or do you like to train as many pokemon as possible in hopes of some really awesome battles with random folks?

Doing a 3DS exclusive mainline Pokémon game makes sense if Nintendo's trying to drive 3DS hardware sales, because there are people who will buy a 3DS for it, but I'm not sure that's something they want to be pushing that hard right now when they're taking a loss on the system.

SerenaSarahFebruary 05, 2012

Guys, you don't need to fight about spelling on a Poke`mon site. I spell grey grey but I'm American. It DOESN'T MATTER!! Just say something if it's about Poke`mon, NOT spelling errors! I think that some kids would beg to have a 3DS if Poke`mon Grey was a mixture of Black and White and upgraded but I'm happy with my plain old DS Light, with just new games. And I also think that they might not do a Poke`mon Grey, even though I really want it, because it's 2012 now and I haven't heard anything yet.
