Podcast Discussion / Episode 893: It's Very Disney Police+
« on: September 22, 2024, 11:35:23 AM »

If you think of Disney, you're now disclaimed from suing in court.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/68640/episode-893-its-very-disney-police

This week: The "Iron Man" Jon remains absent, but Greg returns. And, at his suggestion, we started the show with Listener Mail. This week we have three emails: when and why do you throw yourself into gaming marathons (00:06:40), a missive from the future on the Game2ube and its IR Camera/ocular decimators (00:33:29), and identifying unexpected "breakout" characters (00:59:09).

After a break, James is abducted (this is explained before the segment), but Greg and Gui continue with New Business. Greg has a report from the final Splatoon 3 Splatfest, and its big concert blowout (01:27:32). Greg also has moved onto the extra mode of Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow, in Castlevania Dominus Collection (01:32:54). Guillaume is looking for his brawler kick with Double Dragon Gaiden: Rise Of The Dragons (01:49:10) and his continuing Kamurocho adventures in Yakuza 0 (02:04:25).

After the end music, James and Greg record a supplemental segment on Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club (02:15:43). James has completed the latest FDC game and has some really complicated thoughts on what it all means. What was planned to be a 20 minute, spoiler-free, segment blossomed into nearly 90 minute deep dive on the game.

As a reminder, James will be out for the next two weeks. So, if you don't want him to ruin your question, now is your chance! Send it in today

Podcast Discussion / Episode 892: The Sound of One Hand Mario-ing
« on: September 15, 2024, 03:59:37 PM »

Privately, in your own room, please.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/68560/episode-892-the-sound-of-one-hand-mario-ing

This is a sad and lonely episode.

Greg: Gone.Jon: Missing.James: Present.Guillaume: Impersonating everyone else.

Did we plan for a two-man show? Absolutely not. Is it what we would have wanted? Nope. Did it happen? Only you can decide if that was Greg "ahoy-hoy"-ing or if Guillaume is a great impersonator.

We're very New Business today. We decided to alternate due to (hand waving). James kicks the show off with Mario Run (00:06:18). It is...a respectable effort. It's also not very fun. Guillaume continues to control the roaring 1980s with Yakuza 0 (00:37:52). James teaches the controversy in the alarmingly improbable Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club (00:56:45). Guillaume closes us out with the relaxing vibes of Natsu-Mon: 20th Century Summer Kid (01:29:14).

I know that's the DS Game, just bear with me here...

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/68452/episode-891-bangai-o-spirit-this-game-out-of-your-house

Jon is out this week, so GG+J launch into an all-email bonanza.

...they did three emails.

Why are we so bad at this?

THIS WEEK: we play GX's dumb Kairosoft LOWER or HIGHER (00:02:25) , not brought to you by PrizePicks (or inbox is open, as is our wallet). Then, we explain away the dirt that soil our political campaigns (00:35:15). Pressure washer not included. Lastly,we are on the hunt for Rondo of Blood and Symphony of the Night! (00:55:09) We also talk about DS collections we're still missing (it's Layton)

Send your emails, or else.

What's this? Oh, just only the best Nintendo analysis and commentary on this forsaken internet.

I don't know what segment spawned this, but I'm pleased it was before we went on 2 weeks of Theodore Rex commentary.

Thank you. It was a fun one to record.

Critics call it a brisk two hours and forty minutes.

Jon and Guillaume are both out this, the week of the Non-E3. So instead of Greg and James reading the front page of the site, we brought in the people most responsible for the front page of the site: NWR owner Neal Ronaghan and director John Rairdin! The four discuss the challenges present in "games journalism," the evolving expectations of the audience, SEO's overwhelming power, and how the current news cycles force new approaches in covering the industry. We dive just a little bit into the specifics of NWR, and offer something of an inside look into how this now-ancient website works.

After this long segment, Neal and John had to bounce. Greg and James stick around to run a little New Business. Greg gives his final thoughts on Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. James gives his thoughts on...Disneyland Adventures? I never thought I'd say this, I hope Jon is back next week.

You can send your questions here.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 877: THE RaDio FREE NINTENDO LEGEND
« on: June 02, 2024, 04:14:54 PM »

I hAtE sQuArE eNiX.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/67308/episode-877-the-radio-free-nintendo-legend

This week: we remain Jon-less and are preparing to be Guillaume-less. It's a fraught situation but we have four days to figure it out.

Those are next week's concerns; this week we start with corrections and finally make our way to NEW BUSINESS.

James has two games: The Duck Detective: The Secret Salami (00:10:09) and Chants of Sennaar (00:20:09). Both games are about solving mysteries and plugging words into slots in your journal, but Chants of Sennaar is excellent. Duck Detective is... Duck Detective. Greg hasn't made as quite as much progress with Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (00:41:30) as he'd like, so look for more next week. Guillaume closes out New Business with the ridiculously cased COLLECTION of SaGa FINAL FANTASY LEGEND (00:48:26).

Only one Listener Mail this week, because James had a minor emergency to tend to, but one listener's been broken by Iggy's Reckin' Balls (01:13:27). You can... uh... not this week... by sending us an email.

Our guest list is pretty restricted.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/67258/episode-876-jedi-knights-in-pits-fighting-rancors

Running late with the article this week, so here's a summary!

Jon is out. Gui has For a Vast Future and Huntdown (00:01:30). James take a second pass at a description of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, this time it actually has information (00:12:23). Greg received, but hasn't spent much time with Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (00:34:08). He's spent most his time on Kirby's Return to Dreamland Deluxe (00:40:29).

We come back from the break with news: Nintendo's Shiver acquisition (01:00:35), Atari acquires Intellivision (01:36:15).

Listener Mail demands we Invent a new Metroidvania evolutionary branch (01:48:13) and what shade of black the Switch successor will be (02:22:39).

Send 'em.

CORRECTION: During the episode, James attempted to rattle-off all the companies Embracer is splitting into. He misnamed a publisher that is also an "and friends" but is not related. The three companies Embracer is splitting into are:

  • Asmodee Group
  • Coffee Stain & Friends
  • Middle-earth Enterprises & Friends

We regret the error.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 870: Bipedal Anuses Remastered

Am I boiling the frog? Nah, this is lava.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/66867/episode-870-bipedal-anuses-remastered

This week, Jon has an unplanned day off and we dive head-first into the inbox. But first, we talk about the continuing weirdness that is Nintendo Switch Online's classic offerings.

  • (00:00:00) New SNES NSO games and Arcade Archives: Sunset Riders.
  • (00:22:15) Listener Mail: Highs and Lows of 3DS/Wii U controller gimmicks.
  • (00:44:00) Listener Mail: Memories of Wii U and 3DS online.
  • (01:02:26) Listener Mail: If analog triggers ARE available on Switch, why don't devs support them?
  • (01:23:07) How did Felix the Cat happen and what other old games will NEVER happen?

According to the devs, prior to release PEGI issued an 18+ for gambling, at which point the devs protested. After the protest PEGI changed the rating to 3+. THEN, after the release, PEGI re-re-rated the game to 18+. This is the third rating.

Podcast Discussion / Episode 859: Switch U Marketing
« on: January 28, 2024, 02:51:30 PM »

Sometimes a good idea comes back around.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/66093/episode-859-switch-u-marketing

This week it's predictions another episode Jon missed, delaying predictions!

First, we cursed more Smash spirits into existence, and then email! This week: why so many GBA remakes, more GBA Switch remakes, and will the Switch successor kill the music all over again?

As always emails go here.

Gui also has a little New Business:  EGGCONSOLE SILPHEED PC-8801mkIISR and the Tekken 8 demo.

The worst thing said about an RFN Co-host is uttered this week.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/66040/episode-858-dalle-draw-anime-lea-thompson-holding-a-rectangle-sword

I hope you didn't miss it, because Smash came back with four new spirits last week. Greg and James have claimed Rarau, Noah and Mio, Deep Cut, and Oatchi to preserve their status as "collection complete" gamers. 1517 spirits means their company is elite... in terms of free time. Greg also spent some time with the demo for Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. It's 2D like the old-old-old-old Prince of Persia games, not 3D like the old-old-old Prince of Persia games. No word if the final game will contain Godsmack, like the old-old Prince of Persia game or not like the old-old-old Prince of Persia game. James is still playing a bit of The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero. By a bit, I mean nearly 20 hours. The mission-based structure is scratching a dopamine receptor in his brain in a very dangerous way. Guillaume is now exploring the depths of the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe DLC Wave 2, having played all of the tracks in reverse. He'll have to do 200cc on his own; it's just too chaotic for Karen.

After the break, we attempt to probe the inbox. Sadly, we're almost instantly knocked off-center by a "collaboration" between former host Jonny Metts and Mad Catz.

Also this week: unhinged elemental systems (looking at you Kingdom Hearts) and Nintendo's [bad] way with words.

I demand a pay raise for this.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/65951/episode-856-we-are-not-calling-the-game-hitlers-resurrection-top-secret-stop-asking

Welcome to 2024. We're back, except Jon.

This week Gui leads 2024's New Business with his holiday exploits. Included are conversations about Switch Sports replacing Wii Sports Club, the Jackbox series, Tears of the Kingdom, and Tents and Trees. Greg spent the holiday with old favorite Super Mario Galaxy, now no longer available on Switch.

After a break, James demands emails and then the crew picks games for: stuff to emulate on a Steam Deck and the next "hey you need to play this" now that Ghost Trick is out.

Jonathan Swift could never!

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/65652/episode-851-for-sale-baby-hands-never-worn-and-gator-skin-headwear

Week two of Jon's Sojourn kicks-off with New Business. James skips, but Guillaume and Greg have plenty to cover.

Guillaume has some impressions of WarioWare: Move It!, but mostly he's been playing Super Mario Bros. Wonder and Castlevania Advance Collection.

Greg is focused on the just-released remake of Super Mario RPG, but he saves some time for the just-updated F-Zero 99.

After our regularly-scheduled 15 seconds of "Men of Leisure," it's time for Listener Mail. As always, your questions go here.

Topics this week: a mysterious and haunting Kong rendering, the future of PlatinumGames, and the launch date of the next 3D Zelda.

Time is very much close on our next RetroActive, The 7th Guest.

Post your thoughts on the forums or in the NWR Discord.

Your doctor (me) recommends doing it in one sitting.

The future of the Metroid Prime series is in safe hands.

Recorded without the presence of Jon Lindemann or Lon Jindemann, and on an American holiday, this episode is a quick inbox cleanser.

This week we get: an apology, name Mario Kart, replace the Joy-Con, fix Prime 4, and put a screen on a thing we don't even know exists.

As always, you can undo our efforts to clean the inbox by sending questions here.

RetroActive: The 7th Guest is just two weeks away. It's short, so you can get through it pretty quick.

Send your comments to the forums or the NWR Discord.

It's a work in progress below the surface.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/rfn/65390/episode-847-aggressive-worming

Jon is out this week, so once again we're running a three-man show.

The returning Greg kicks the show off with some post-completion thoughts on Super Mario Bros. Wonder. This is probably pretty close to our definitive segment on the game - you could call it "smooth." We do. About 100 times.

Guillaume is playing Sparklite. It's a roguelike action game available on Switch.

James closes out New Business with Dave the Diver. You're Dave. You're a diver. You hunt fish, you serve sushi, you make money, and you...cheer on an idol? Hey there's more beneath the surface here, if you'll excuse the pun.

A short break gives way to a single Listener Mail segment: could a remake be game of the year? You can send us your questions or fill our last-call for RetroActive suggestions here.

I'm still trying to get the feed stuff sorted. Sorry bout that.

Stoked to participate in the upcoming Retroactive! Where is the best place for discussion these days? Discord? Here in the forums?

My top 3 picks for the game in question:

  • Super Mario Bros Lost Levels
  • Gargoyle’s Quest (GB)
  • Ninja Gaiden

Who's with me?!

Discord is more active but here or there, I'll see it. We'll make a thread in both.
