This eco-friendly shooting game is compatible with the Wii Zapper.

In what can only be described as unexpected, Nintendo and Intelligent Systems (creator of notable series such as Fire Emblem and Advance Wars) have combined forces to create a WiiWare shooting game entitled 530 Eco Shooter (or, as a result of a Japanese play on words, Zero Trash Eco Shooter).

530 Eco Shooter Screenshots

As the story goes, the Can Can aliens are stealing cans from a can factory on earth to use for their vehicles, and it's up to a middle-aged worker at the factory named Ossan to get the cans back. This is done by using a Recycle Cannon to turn the cans into "GE" energy, which can then be gathered in order to thwart the alien plans. "GE" also serves as ammunition, with your energy getting drained as you take hits from the alien invaders. Once your "GE" is gone, the game is over.

530 Eco Shooter supports the Wii Zapper and is best described as an on-rails shooter. You move through each environment on a vehicle, collecting energy by aiming at it and clicking Z. Check out the game's official site to see a trailer for this wacky concept.

Priced at 1000 WiiPoints, the game is set for release on November 24 and is rated A by CERO.

"Can Can Aliens"?  I think "Canivorous Aliens" would have been catchier. Oh well. The plot certainely has potential.

Alright, Nintendo doing a game on WiiWare is good considering how it's basically been a 3rd party service for the most part.  My only real problem with this (besides the ludicrous story, which is standard fare for Nintendo really) is that note about the Wii Zapper.  I have to wonder how stupid they think the general public is (obviously, quite a lot), because just about every game on the Wii that doesn't require the classic controller supports the Wii Zapper.  It's a frickin' plastic shell that has no impact on the game's functionality whatsoever!  I'm surprised they didn't put "supports the Wii Zapper!" on the back of the Smash Bros. Brawl box, because it would be just as relevant.

Now, if they said "optimized for the Wii Zapper", that would actually mean something.  That would mean that the controls have been configured in such a way that if you're fool enough to use the Wii Zapper instead of something like the Nyko Perfect Shot, you could actually have a fun time.

...Yay. It's a... rail shooter.

JUST GIVE ME DUCK HUNT WITH A SHOOTABLE DOG NINTENDO

How about a shootable dog and bonus levels with Dick Cheney?  I'd buy it.

I want to shoot women who kick in the air and just don't care.

1000 points can buy you Onslaught which is a proper FPS...

Try hitting A and B together while using the Zapper.

Was that supposed to refute something?  My point was that you can play any Wii game that just uses the Wiimote and the nunchuck with the Zapper.  It's not the device's intended functionality and you'd be foolish to play it that way but it doesn't crash the game or anything.  Besides, I just looked at my Wii Zapper box, and although it requires some uncomfortable hand twisting it's still possible to press A & B at the same time inside the Zapper shell (though when you'd ever do that outside of a QTE is anyone's guess).

KDR_11kNovember 21, 2009

The point is that while it's technically possible to play any game with the Zapper it's impractical with most. I could play The Conduit with my gun shell but since it needs all those buttons on the top of the remote frequently I would severely cripple myself. On the other hand I can play Wild West Guns or Water Warfare without ever reaching for the top of the remote so I can use the gun shell without negative impact.

try brawl with a gun. That could work

Aw, I was hoping this was the return of Battleclash.

StratosNovember 21, 2009

I wanted Yoshi's Safari to make a comeback.

Water Warare is more interesting to me than this.

I found that Elebits plays excellent with the Wii Zapper. The only time I need to use any of the other buttons on the Wii Remote is when I need to confirm selections or pause the game.

From a story standpoint, there is nothing more interesting than this.

There is Disaster.

Though I am worried if this is IS' only current project. I was hoping for a new Fire Emblem on Wii. How big is that studio? Could this possibly be a B Team project?

Sometimes WiiWare games just pop out of nowhere. I can't decide if that's a good thing or not...

I don't want Intelligent Systems going anywhere near Fire Emblem again until they've learned to advance the franchise formula to bring it on par with something like Valkyria Chronicles.

I thought the Wii FE was great. Sure there was some room for improvement, but it was a solid game. I'd like to see a Wii game similar to Sacred Stones with to world map and options of fighting skirmishes or entering those challenge towers along with the option of choosing your units next class.

More the issue with FE Wii was there were all of these great ideas but you rarely got enough time with a number of the units to make much of a difference with those changes. The major chapters with different characters broke it all up too much.

Don't get me wrong: I really liked both Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn (Radiant Dawn is one of only 4 Wii games I still own), but Valkyria Chronicles set a new standard for how strategy RPGs should work and flow.  After playing through an epic 20+ hour campaign in VC with full 3D environments; full character movement; flexible tactics; ease of play; and unparalleled presentation, I just can't see myself going back to Fire Emblem's decades old grid-based by-the-book tactical play.  Path of Radiance/Radiant Dawn introduced small advances that made the franchise much more fun to play (battle saves, height advantages, bonus experience, etc.), but it's long since time that Nintendo took that franchise to the next level.

KDR_11kNovember 22, 2009

My reference for strategy RPGs is Dawn of War 2.

Is that a Strategy RPG, or an RTS with RPG elements?  I only played the original Dawn of War, and it was a pretty fast-paced RTS.

KDR_11kNovember 22, 2009

The campaign in DoW2 is pretty much an SRPG, while the underlying engine is an RTS the campaign has a fixed number of characters that you take to a mission, they have stats (including special abilities) and equipment that you can get from random drops or as mission rewards and many enemy attacks have warnings so you can move your characters out of the way.

So basically it's like WarCraft III (which was a strategy game with RPG elements like experience levels, loot, and sidequests), but with less of the "base building" aspect?  Sounds interesting (especially since I'm a big fan of WC3), but unfortunately I found that series' universe utterly boring from what I played of Dawn of War 1 (singleplayer campaign completed, as well as some of the singleplayer of the first expansion) so it looks like it's just not for me.  I did like what Relic did with Homeworld and Homeworld 2, though.  I just wish Relic would release a Homeworld game that wasn't sadistically difficult (which both Homeworld games are, though Cataclysm is do-able).

StratosNovember 22, 2009

I want a new Homeworld game period. Now I want to go back and play them again. Oddly, I seem to remember having the most trouble with Cataclysm.

What system was Valkyria Chronicles for again?

PS3.  If you have a PS3, you can pick up Valkyria Chronicles for cheap now because Sega was stupid enough to try and release that during the flood of Christmas releases in 2008...and no one bought it.

KDR_11kNovember 22, 2009

DoW2 has no base building at all, your party is dropped onto the battlefield from orbit and then you start moving out. You can take control points which you can retreat to and special buildings that grant you favours throughout the campaign (e.g. the ability to drop defense turrets onto the map) but there's no real territory, resource (beyond items like med kits and grenades) or base you have to deal with. WC3 was an RTS with heroes in it, DoW2's campaign is ONLY heroes. You take four of them and that's the entirety of your force and each hero is a different unit type (Force Commander, tac marine, scout, heavy weapons team, assault marines and dreadnaught). Then it comes down to utilizing cover, special abilities and general strengths and weaknesses to win.

I'm waiting to see Valkyria Chronicles hit the $20 price point on Amazon.

You, sir, are part of the reason why we're stuck with Valkyria Chronicles 2 on PSP.  :P

KDR_11kNovember 23, 2009

No, I believe that's because the PSP has sold about twice as many units as the PS3.

StratosNovember 23, 2009

I'll add Valkyria Chronicles to my list of games to get when I get a PS3.
