ASH Rated by ESRB

Nintendo looks to bring Hironobu Sakaguchi's DS strategy RPG to America.

Nintendo's ASH was rated E 10+ today by the ESRB. Since acquiring an ESRB rating is a typical step in gaining release for the American market, ASH is probably being localized into the English language.

Listing from the ESRB Website

Released in Japan last October, ASH is a strategy RPG developed by Racijn / Mistwalker Studios and directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, father of the Final Fantasy series. It features full voice acting, FMV sequences, and pre-rendered visuals for its battles. The game garnered fairly strong reviews upon release, receiving a 33/40 from Famitsu for instance, but achieved relatively weak sales.

ASH (short for Archaic Sealed Heat) chronicles the journey of Queen Aisha to unravel the mystery behind an ancient flame. This flame is responsible for destroying her kingdom and transforming her people into living ash.

Currently there is no official release date for ASH, nor are there any details about release in other territories.

Glad to see this coming to America, I will probably take a closer look at it when some more official information is provided.

I was SO ready to instabuy this. Then I saw that it was an SRPG... T_T

Oh goody, another SRPG, just what the DS has been lacking!

With no Fire Emblem game yet, yes, it's been lacking them. :D

There's no DS fire emblem?

Not yet. One was announced late last year (set in the universe of the first three games; it's been assumed to be a remake of the first or third, based on screenshots showing Marth, but I don't think it's been officially announced), but there's been little news about it, much less a release.

Kytim89July 02, 2010

I have heared that the cartridge for this game is around one GB in total size. I was wondering if they could release it in America as a 3DS title since those games for the 3DS will be around 2 GB each. It just makes sense.

I thought this was a new topic. Thanks Kytim for getting my hopes up.

Gb, as in Gigabit; not GB, as in Gigabyte. ASH: Archaic Sealed Heat is 2 Gigabits, which is about 250 Megabytes. The largest DS game is the upcoming Level-5/Studio Ghibli game Ni no Kuni: Shikkoku no Madōshi, which will be about 512 MB.

StratosJuly 07, 2010

So DS cards can now equal N64 game sizes.

I had hopes this was finally going to come out. It's been over two years so I've given up hope.

RIP ASH and Soma Bringer and Tact of Magic...  :'(

"now" equal N64? The largest N64 game was 64MB (which was done by only two games: Conker's Bad Fur Day and Resident Evil 2), so DS passed it years ago.

I could have sworn Ogre Battle 64 was 512 MB.  Or was it 512 Mb?

EDIT:  Nope, 40 MB.  Anyway, can we let this thread die now?  Being reminded of yet another promising DS game that never left Japan is just depressing.

TJ SpykeJuly 07, 2010

Must have been Mb, a lot of N64 games sizes were described in megabits rather than megabytes. The N64 never had a larger game than 64MB.

StratosJuly 07, 2010

It was Mb then. For whatever reason the numbers are burned into my memory. Yoshi's Story was 128, Ocarina of Time was 256, Resident Evil was 512.

It still amazes me that Super Mario 64 is 8MB, and yet it has similar size and scope as recent games like Super Mario Galaxy 2, which can use up to 4.7GB. That could mean any number of things...

KDR_11kJuly 08, 2010

That means it looks ugly as hell with a few blurry textures plastered all over its blocky environments.

Most of the space in the recent games is used up by (poorly compressed) movies and (streamed) music.  For instance, SMG2 takes up 3GB less than SMG1 because it doesn't have movies.  Take out the music, and you're only left with 500MB.

ThePermJuly 08, 2010

it means that mario had like 50 polygons and small stretched textures in smb64 and mario in mario galaxy has like 4000 polygons and a 2-4MB texture, the trees are not blurry sprites, plus the music was really simple midis in 64, whereas it was orchestrated in galaxy. I could go on and on...it all adds up eventually.

Sounds like a motto that Kojima lives by. Wasn't he the first to run out of room on a Blue-Ray?

TJ SpykeJuly 08, 2010

Blu-ray (well, technically Blu-ray Disc).

And that's largely because he didn't bother compressing movies or music.

Mop it upJuly 08, 2010

I knew it meant current games could have more content than they do. It really goes to show that a 50GB disc is currently largely unnecessary.

YmeegodJuly 08, 2010

Actually the DS did have a FE game, FE Shadow Dragon which was a remake of the orginal FE game.  In fact the upcoming FE game is just another remake, FEIII, and should be coming this year I think.

Any date for Ash?  Might look into it.

Check the date for when the thread happened. Kytim89 bumped a 2-year old thread (from May 2008), that was before Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragons was announced.

Kytim89July 12, 2010

Would it be for Nintendo to localize this game and release it as a wiiware title? If they are nervous about selling it as a stand alone title, why don't they just make into a wiiware game? There is less financial risk because they do not have to manufacture game cartridges and deal with retailers. Charge 1500 wii points for the game.

Then they'd have to port the game to Wii in addition to localizing it, and they'd be selling to a much smaller market. It'd be a bigger risk than just bringing the DS game over.

StratosJuly 13, 2010

Maybe DSiWare? It's probably too big for that but I could see smaller titles come out on the Shop service.

Bringing sorrow to Nintendo gamers, one necro-thread-bump at a time.

If I remember correctly, this game was notable for using a 256 MB card, the largest at the time, which you'll note is the same size as the entire internal storage of the DSi.

TJ SpykeJuly 13, 2010

And is also six times the max size for WiiWare games (the WiiWare cap is 40MB).

SarailJuly 13, 2010

I find that so ridiculous that Nintendo won't raise the cap for WiiWare games.  So much more could be created (innovatively speaking) that I find it crazy that Nintendo would restrain devs from ideas.  Especially when Nintendo is so new idea centric to begin with.

Mop it upJuly 13, 2010

I'm fairly certain the cap is due to technical limitations, and not just some arbitrary number.

broodwarsJuly 13, 2010

With SD Card support, those technical limitations are much less, though.  Sure, we still have a maximum possible space of 512 MB, but with the ability to store those files on an SD Card (until needed) we could at least see a cap size increase to 100-200 MB.

Mop it upJuly 13, 2010

Well, half that internal space is reserved for system updates and the message board, so there's actually 256MB of available space for games and saves. Plus, VC and WiiWare games are loaded into the system's RAM when played, so the absolute max would be 88MB, I believe. Though I think I heard that half that space is used for... something... so that's where 40MB comes from.

TJ SpykeJuly 13, 2010

This could be solved if Nintendo would let people play games right from the SD cards (right now you still need the space on your Wii system so it can create a temporary file on your system).
