No Friend Codes on Wii2?
« Reply #3725 on: April 23, 2011, 11:44:35 PM »
Sam Kennedy of 1up.com seems very confident that Wii2 will not have Friend Codes
http://www.1up.com/do/minisite?cId=3172958

he also says this:
-“Not just like a new controller,” implying that there’s something more to the system than simply a new input device.
-It’ll have a “Wii vibe” and high definition graphics, ”plus something,” meaning another feature we’re unaware of.
-Apparently Nintendo fans will be like “wow.”

http://wiihdrumors.com/the-wii-2-wont-use-friend-codes/

the source above also points out some speculation from Variasuit.com about Nintendo having delayed the eShop for that same reason. Something that I speculated on and hope to be true. They are speculating that No Friend Codes on Wii2 and delayed eShop for 3DS leads to Nintendo working out the details of their new Account based system.

So Much for golf and bowling.
Except that you can still use the Wii Remotes (and Motion+) with it. ;)

But developers will use the Wii Remotes as much as they have used Gamecube controllers this generation.
Exactly.

And that's what thrills me to death. Time to get back to basics while reinventing the wheel. It's possible to do this with a more traditionally inclined controller. I'm sick of motion controls. And it seems that developers are, too. Yay.
I like Nintendo more than j00!

What's the point? Even Nintendo have said that the home and portable systems need to be unique. There's no reason to make a console more like a portable, just as making a portable more like a console doesn't really work out.

Maybe I'm just weird, but I'd prefer to play most games on a handheld. Unless it requires specific controls (motion, mouse/keyboard, or a special proprietary controller) or is more of a party game (something like Mario Party or Smash Bros. or Rock Band), I want to at least have the option of playing it on a handheld.

I do. But only if it's the 3DS in some kind of super-cool, innovative way for one or two games. :B

Are you saying what you want is one unified game you can buy and play on both a console and a handheld? I'd be okay with that idea... though the current handhelds can't provide the same games as consoles can. They'd need better tech.

That would be awesome, but I'd settle for just being able to buy handheld versions of the console games. Playing games on a big screen doesn't appeal to me in the same way as watching movies or TV one one would, and since that's the one real advantage consoles have over handhelds, I'd rather just play handhelds. I'm really interested to see what comes of Sony's NGP, which seems to be a handheld PS3. If the thing gets real software support, I'll definitely buy one.

I like the idea that's been brought up of a console that can stream games to the controller with the screen. Even though I prefer handhelds, I spend most of my time playing them in my own home. I just like to be able to play them while I or someone else watches TV, or to take it from one room to another without much hassle. The streaming capability would give me the option of playing the same game on either my TV or on the handheld unit, presumably carrying over save data and all that between the two. I really hope that rumor is true.

You wouldn't presumably carry over save data if you're streaming the game to the controller, as you would be playing the game on the console but just viewing it on the controller. It's still the same game being played on the same system.

I just hope this means the new console will keep a Wii remote like controller in addition to whatever new controller is included. I think it's crazy that Nintendo would do away with the control scheme. They have to know it works very well and is the better control method for certain genres. Include both controllers (more buttons on the motion controller) so developers will make control schemes for both.

It appears that the Project Cafe code name may have some truth behind it.
This is as close to a confirmation of one of the rumors we will get until it comes out of Nintendo's own mouth, which will hopefully be 12am pst/3am est Monday nite during the Nintendo Investors meeting @4pm JPN Time on the 26th.

How long is a while?

It's also possible that they are finally working on more than one project at the moment too. So when they say they won't be working on one for a while, that could mean we won't see it for atleast a year, or maybe this rumor is just BS. We won't know either way until someone official starts talking . So maybe Late Monday nite or the usual "Wait till E3"

« Reply #3749 on: April 25, 2011, 12:19:25 AM »
Everything 01net has said so far
- Wii2 = "Project Café"

- Developer quotes: graphics capabilities "roughly equal to those of the Xbox 360", performance "over the Xbox 360, but just a notch".

- custom IBM PowerPC CPU with three cores

- RAM: unknown. 01net speculates: It would be logical that it is a unified RAM, like the 360, with a minimum of 512 MB

- Graphics processor: AMD (ATI) - probably a series R700, with a shader (for managing the effects) more recent than the Xbox 360 (probably version 4.1).

- controller has a 6" touch screen; 16:9, Single Touch, Sub HD with a resolution of ~800 x 500

- a front-facing camera

- Standard set of buttons (D-Pad, two bumpers, two triggers (4 face buttons?) & IR lights (like a sensor bar)

- Wireless streaming of video content to controllers w/o need for TV.

- Controllers are clients, all processing is done on the console then streamed in HQ with no lag

- Another Surprise feature

- To be revealed at E3

- Launch in June 2012

- Rockstar among 1st to recieve SDK's and have a game planned

- Controller Mockup closest to actual controller according to their source "looks like a close cousin of the uDraw Tablet":
