The company's shareholders have voted overwhelmingly in favor of the Square Enix buyout.

During a shareholder meeting, shareholders voted whether or not to allow Square Enix to take over Eidos for $117 Million. Over 85 percent of voters voted in favor of the corporate takeover.

Eidos will suspend its shares on April 21st and will be delisted from the London Stock Exchange the very next day. Square Enix will officially own Eidos on May 6th, giving the major Japanese game maker access to Eidos' distribution network in America and Europe as well as possession of Eidos' franchises, including the storied Tomb Raider property.

This still seems strange to me that Square Enix wants Eidos Interactive.

Flames_of_chaosLukasz Balicki, Staff AlumnusMarch 28, 2009

Not really because Square wants to expand to the West even more, Square's purchase of Taito gave them a strong WiiWare and arcade presence, the Eidos purchase will give square popular western franchises, new distribution channels.

TJ SpykeMarch 28, 2009

I know they want to expand, it just doesn't seem like any of Eidos's IPs fit in with Square Enix. Bethesda Softworks seem like more of a company that would fit in with them.

Well, I for one, welcome our new, 80-hour Tomb Raider RPG overlords.

Well Taito's IPs don't fit in with Square Enix's and that's the point they want the company to be more diverse, and business 101 always said to grab more userbase you have to diversify.

Aren't JRPGs shortening their hours in this generation? At least some console JRPGs clock in at 40 hours or so and the new DS Valkyrie Profile runs in at 20+ hours.

Anyway, I agree this is an odd purchase. I don't see what Eidos has to offer to Square Enix other than its name and western connections. On the IP side of things, is there anything besides Tomb Raider?

IceColdMarch 28, 2009

Haha, the title makes it seem like Eidos is taking over S-E..

BlackNMild2k1March 28, 2009

What IP's does Eidos have besides Tomb Raider?

The 2 most well known would probably be Thief and Hitman.

ReverendNoahWhateleyMarch 29, 2009

Eidos published Monster Lab, which was one of my favorite games of 2008.  "Kids game," indeed!

Flames_of_chaosLukasz Balicki, Staff AlumnusMarch 29, 2009

There's also Deus Ex.

That may be the point, diversifying. They can already do long, boring FMVfests without outside help.

This. A thousand times this. The very first thought I had was "...well, this could only be good for Deus Ex 3."

SquareEnixTaitoEidos?  (SETE?)

Flames_of_chaosLukasz Balicki, Staff AlumnusMarch 29, 2009

I think it will be Eidos A Square Enix company, like how we see Taito games in North America. In Japan and Europe it's just outright Square Enix.

LouieturkeyMarch 30, 2009

Does this mean Lara Croft will be in the KH3?

Can anyone else remember any instances of a Japanese game company buying out an American one?  I can't. edit: Retro?

I wonder if there is going to be fat trimming, or the Eidos execs finding a profitable way to bail out. I'm actually betting on a whole lot of nothing getting done

TJ SpykeApril 02, 2009

Retro barely counts in my opinion. Nintendo bought them before they ever released a game.

After some quick checking, I did find another one. Sony purchased Naughty Dog in 2002.

NinGurl69 *hugglesApril 02, 2009

This was Eidos' execs' fantastic bailout plan.  Basically, Square got Eidos like Microsoft got Rare.

These guys deserve to give Hairy Palm High-Fives to each other.

edit: Hairy

I'm not sure this was a good move on S-E's part.

I mean, instead of investing in... say... games for market leading platforms, they are buying a company whose employees are probably thinking now's a good time to get out.  This reminds me of when Microsoft bought the High Heat Baseball license from 3DO's rotting corpse.  They didn't do anything with it, so they just blew a fad wad of cash for nothing.
