Trip on Dolphin

We don't mean trip over the console either, we're of course referring to 3D0 founder, Trip Hawkins!

3DO is definitely going to develop for Dolphin, yet they don't have Development kits yet. IGN64 has the stuff...

3DO's founder and CEO Trip Hawkins told IGN64 today that the company will "absolutely" develop software for Nintendo's next-generation console, codenamed Dolphin. However, gamers expecting a graphically intense take on the Army Men franchise for the console may have a long wait in store for them as no production work has begun yet.

"Nintendo has said that it is going to start supplying [Dolphin] development systems to us in a few months," said Hawkins. "Right now we're thinking about it pretty actively in terms of what we've like to do, but we haven't got the development systems yet."

When questioned on whether or not he thought Nintendo stood a chance of meeting its projected 2000 release date for Dolphin, Hawkins had this to say: "I know a lot less because Nintendo has not revealed as much. The question is, how far behind Sony is it? Sony is shipping in March and we know Nintendo is on a somewhat later schedule. Historically, Nintendo has shipped in Japan and come back a full year later to ship in the US, but it doesn't necessarily have to do that every single time."

Regardless of when the console debuts, though, it seems certain that 3DO will back it extensively. "Looking ahead to Dolphin, it's very exciting because as a DVD-format machine it will be a lot easier for us to think big and make games without the constraints," said Hawkins. "Plus we won't have to worry so much about the inventory risks so we can expand the product line and do more games."
