Kamiya Would Like to Return to Viewtiful Joe Series

The former Capcom director relishes the opportunity to continue the celebrated series himself.

Game Informer recently caught up with Platinum Games' Hideki Kamiya, former development director of Capcom classics Viewtiful Joe and Okami. While he is currently working on Bayonetta for PS3/Xbox 360, he was asked about which of his former franchises he'd like to revisit if he could. While stressing that his previous creations are properties of their publisher, he did express an interest to return to the Viewtiful Joe franchise.

As to why he would choose Viewtiful Joe over Okami, Kamiya explained that, "Up until very recently I really felt someday I wanted to make a sequel to Okami, and there were others who wanted me to as well. But then the other day I heard the announcement that someone else would be making a sequel and now I'm just not interested in it anymore. Once someone else touches a world that you yourself created it stops being yours. There is no point in making a sequel when the world doesn't belong to you. Viewtiful Joe is probably all I've got left. That story is incomplete so I'd like to finish it someday. But that would probably be the most difficult one to do [laughs]."

Kamiya is referring to Okamiden, a Nintendo DS sequel to Okami that picks up a few months after the original left off. Its protagonist will be Chibiterasu, a younger version of the first game's Amaterasu.

You ruined what you created.  Let it die.

Correction, Capcom meddled and he had no choice but to ruin it.

"There is no point in making a sequel when the world doesn't belong to you."

Huh, he's an all or nothing guy. Wonder if his sentiment is shared by other developers, eastern and western.

As for a Viewtiful Joe sequel, I would like it! I never had the chance to check out Viewtiful Joe 2, Red Hot Rumble, or Double Trouble so I wouldn't know how those games messed things up. Still, I think there's always a chance to fix things. Hmm, maybe by starting as a downloadable title first?

Viewtiful Joe WiiWare sounds like a perfect fit for the title.

Oh, VJ2 sucked all right.  Its technical qualities were held back due to PS2 co-development, the on-screen presentation was overloaded with flashy crap like too many marshmallows in my Lucky Charms, the challenge level was off-balance in a "casualized" way, and the bosses and puzzles that made little sense with HARD minibosses or WAY TOO EASY character bosses depending on using Joe or Silvia  (some bosses didn't seem to put up a fight).  The vehicle stages sucked too, the ocean-crawling submarines was just uninteresting.

Viewtiful Joe is probably my favorite GameCube game. Viewtiful Joe 2 was not. I played about five minutes of Red Hot Rumble and didn't like it at all, and I played half of VJoe DS and kind of liked it.

Talk about a degradation of a series.

I'm all for this VJoe WiiWare proposition. I don't think it would happen, though. At least not with Kamiya involved.

It's funny how a TV show, game based on the TV show, and a DS game don't cause the leading developer to be upset about other hands on his franchise, yet one unreleased DS game does.

Weird.

i have VJ2 but have yet to play it. i wish i woulda known a bout th is before spending like $2 on it at gamestop.

I heard VJ2 was still great which is why I bought it (it's in the backlog) Obviously, a couple bad games don't kill an IP. A new game should definately come out.

can't trust that Mike fellow.

I thought Atsushi Inaba (who produced MadWorld) was the one who directed the original VJ for the GCN.

Am I wrong?

VJ2 was more of the same, but I enjoyed it a lot. And it ends on a total cliffhanger, so I definitely wouldn't mind a proper continuation. As for the other games, the VJDS was decent (but not as good as the console versions), and Red Hot Rumble was actually kind of awful.
