Square Enix reveals the U.S. name of their next big DS release.

Today, Square Enix's Slime Knights website revealed that the game's U.S. title will apparently be Dragon Quest IX: Defenders of the Skies.

They also reveal a few gameplay hints, describing the 4-Player Wi-Fi gameplay as likely being "active battles with characters...controlling their own movement. " They also describe how random battles will be replaced with enemies that can be seen in the game world, and offer links to YouTube game footage and a DQIX teaser site.

Nintendo World Report will have more details on this hugely anticipated game as they become available.

At least the title is smaller than what they've got for dragon quest swords.

4 player co-op + online = massive faping.

As long as there is offline mode I will be even happier.

CericDecember 12, 2006

As mentioned before I'm sort of sad to see the menus and random battles go away.

Bill AurionDecember 12, 2006

Missing random battles is akin to missing an ulcer... =|

Action/RPG + NO RANDOM BATTLES + 4-player-onrine for the win!

Defender of the Skies: Fight evil corporations that emit greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere! Only you can stop Global Warming! You are Captain Planet!

CericDecember 13, 2006

Dud I want to be Capt Planet.

Anyway..

Bill: Shouldn't it be Action/RPG - Random Battle + 4 Player-Online + French Lady of Service = Happy Bill!

The DQ games are as classic as they come. Lots of random battles, hard ass boss battles, backtracking in order to revive a dead ally etc. Such stuff would not fly over some gamers, so I wonder how classic the new DQ will be.

mantidorDecember 13, 2006

I liked more Defender of the Stars, not that I care for DQ anyway, but the fact they are no longer turn based interest me, I might even try DQ8.

IceColdDecember 13, 2006

Yeah, an action RPG is a lot more appealing to me..

I think you are mixing Dragon Quest IX and Swords up... face-icon-small-smile.gif

First FF:CC, now DQIX. Both sound like online SoM. Could there possibly be a better time to be a gamer? Well, maybe if they actually ever do make another good Mana game...

Your right. I should get rid of 4 Player Online...

(yeah I know its swords... Have I mentioned I'm excited about that game?)

Being able to see the enemies is always a good thing. That's pretty much why I love Super Mario RPG so much but can never quite get into other RPGs. Still I wonder how the hardcore DQ fans in Japan will take it. DQ has remained very traditional. DQVII was a huge hit in Japan but in terms of gameplay it supposedly was quite dated. Dragon Quest is in some way the old style RPG for people that want RPGs to continue to play like something on the NES. But then I don't know much about DQVIII so maybe major changes have already been made and the fans were acceptant of it.

KDR_11kDecember 14, 2006

They should take Fallout, put it under the Final Fantasy name and release it in Japan. Maybe then the Japanese will develop some taste.
