Casey's been a bit quiet on the What We've Been Playing front, but not this week. He's got three games to talk about including a good ol fashioned Nontendo. To kick it off we start with Hades, the roguelite from Supergiant Games. Then we move into some Nontendo business with Planet Coaster, the spiritual successor to Roller Coaster Tycoon and to wrap it up, Ys Origin... oooohhhhweeeeee!

It's been a fun trip down memory lane and we bring in a very special guest to talk all about all Galaxy. The final game we'll be covering as part of the 3D All Stars release, but we have plans to continue talking more 3D Marios in the future!

Well he's got an ol' fashioned Mystery History queued up Jerry. It turns out to be a bit of a shorter episode, but don't worry... next week is bound to be a dozy!

After the usual eShop and News goodness, we get into some predictions. We're talking Breath of the Wild 2 and Super Mario 35th Anniversary and boy is Kynan really good at this! Casey and Perry try to keep up, but yeah you won't want to miss what Kynan has to say!

What was once thought to be a short episode, it turns out to be pretty much a normal run time thanks in part to some rambling, but also a bunch of games! This past week was our Patreon Game Night and we put Clubhouse Games to good use rocking out to President. It definitely takes a hot minute to fully understand, but once in the flow of the game turns out to be an absolute blast. Casey also put in some time with Radio Squid, his eShop pick of last week and don't be fooled by its cute exterior, this game is mean and you'll die a whole bunch (that or Casey is just terrible, either or). Then Jerk Jerkum finally remembered to talk about Sunset Riders!

Holy moly, next week is the Big 200 and we're super excited! We fielded some awesome suggestions for the show, but we think we came up with the perfect thing (or things). Hope you guys are all as eager as we are!

The boys are back at it again bringing a few new titles to the table. Casey's never ending quest to see the credits roll in Xenoblade continues, but he's tossing in a little Burnout Paradise to give himself a chance of pace. This remaster runs exceptionally well on the Switch and it turns out, it's also a ton of fun to play! Jerry's been playing something a little more slow-paced when he isn't playing Fortnite. That's right a little game you might not have heard of, Overland. This game packs a punch in the strategy department and is free on Apple Arcade!

There once was a man who had no desire to purchase a 90+ hour game that he had already beaten, but then like the weak man he is, ended up purchasing it on launch day and that man is Casey. He didn't plan on it, but he ended up with Xenoblade Chronicles DE and so far so good. Reliving the game is bringing back a flood of awesome memories and is making the 90+ hour tag not seem to daunting. Jerry... well Jerry somehow stumbled into the Apple Arcade to play some mobile games. BOOOOO. However, he was pleasantly surprised to find that it's actually a great service with a bunch of cool games. He gives us the skinny on Grindstone and What The Golf?

In the downtime he's been playing Golf With Your Friends, although not many friends out there to play with... at least yet. Then we round it out with none other then Animal Crossing.

After a little break Xander runs off to do Xander things... probably playing Luigi's Mansion or Paper Mario. But we are quickly joined by David and Jordan of Thirsty Mage fame to talk about a classic. That's right, we are looking back at the original Pokemon trilogy!

TalkBack / Sunless Sea: Zubmariner Edition (Switch) Review
« on: April 23, 2020, 05:08:53 AM »

Try not to fall asleep behind the wheel.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/53571/sunless-sea-zubmariner-edition-switch-review

Sunless Sea is an exploration based adventure that sets sail around the dark and ominous waters surrounding Fallen London. Survival is key as you venture from port-to-port encountering both enemies and mental obstacles along the way. The world is big and traversing it takes time, leading to a much slower paced experience with heavy amounts of text to read. Combat while present, takes a back seat to creating eerie and isolated feelings.

Instead of a singular goal to work towards, multiple options are available based on the individual captains and their ambitions, offering a handful of routes to take. Once the captain has been chosen it’s time to set off on a free exploration of the map. While docked in port, gameplay is done through a series of text menus. Visiting different areas, shops, and people help to uncover stories within the world and sometimes give hints on where a point of interest might be. Relying heavily on text to drive gameplay isn’t usually my cup of tea, but even with putting my best foot forward, almost all of the dialogue failed to garner my interest. Considering how much Sunless Sea uses dialogue as a driving force, this made the discovery of new ports more of a chore than a reward.

When not reading text at a port, exploration of the gloomy seas is the main objective. Unfortunately outside of being visually appealing, there just isn’t that much too it. Enemy ships do roam around and some wild creatures will attack from time to time, but combat is fairly basic and more often than not I found myself dodging potential threats to avoid any damage to my vessel. Fuel and food are necessities required for survival and keeping enough stock can be relatively difficult, especially early on when your budget is limited. Terror is another status bar you’ll need to keep an eye on because when levels get too high negative events start happening to your crew.

It’s stated early on that death will be a normal occurrence and it most certainly is. Whether it be from enemy fire or lack of food, crew members will die with the grim. Moral decisions come into play as a hungry crew will have to decide if eating a deceased crew member is the way to go, something I thought was a nice touch. After the captain falls you start a fresh run, but there are some elements that can carry over to help make things a bit smoother. I really enjoyed the dark tone and vibe, but sadly it isn’t enough to overcome the mundane gameplay and lack of instruction.

Originally a release on the PC, its translation to Switch is more or less solid. The initial loading into the game is noticeably long, but after that point everything moves along smoothly. There is a bit of jankiness when scrolling through text and choosing options, but ultimately a minor annoyance. One of the biggest omissions is a proper tutorial or guide system in game. Since originally being released in 2015, there are plenty of resources online for help, but that doesn’t diminish the fact you’re mostly on your own in-game when it comes to figuring things out.

Sunless Sea has a really great atmosphere that should be ripe for exploring, but unfortunately it falls flat when it comes to core gameplay elements. Story bits are slow to develop and failed to hook me, while the act of sailing itself is mundane. That’s not to say it’s devoid of good ideas, but it’ll take someone who doesn’t mind a slow burn to fully enjoy.

We got another big boy episode this week featuring a crossover with The Thirsty Mage! But before all that Casey and Perry got a few games to chat about. Casey got to sink more time into Exit The Gungeon and it's been time well spent. He's also squeezing in  some Final Fantasy VI as well. Jerry on the other hand hasn't played anything new, but did play Splatoon 2 for Patreon Game Night!

Ahhh who doesn't love a good crossover especially with it's with David and Jordan joining us from The Thirsty Mage. Last time we took a deep dive into one a Nintendo all-time great, but this week we dive into a littler known series coming by way of Capcom. Gargoyle's Quest is a fun little game for the Game Boy! It was a tough choice, but we decided the show must press on despite the alternative of playing Animal Crossing forever. It was close though because hot damn, Animal Crossing New Horizons rocks. So much to talk about, you won't want to miss it! We managed to squeeze in some other games. Perry's been continuing his conquest of becoming smarter and while not playing Brain Training, he's been into Wunderling.
