Letter From The Director: Easy Going Nintendo Fan

Seriously, I'm not really a Nintendo apologist. Maybe.

I've been musing lately about how, on the past few episodes of NWR Newscast, I've settled into the Nintendo apologist role. I'm kind of bothered by this a little bit. Listen to the episodes (#54 and #52) in question to catch up.

My love for Nintendo is vast, and it really stems from the idea that they make games I like. Do I hate games such as Halo, Call of Duty, and Portal? Not at all. I enjoy them when I play them, but they don't get me as excited as your Zeldas, Marios, or even your Punch-Outs. Those are the games I grew up with, and those are the games I still enjoy immensely. Nintendo's design style just works for me, generally.

After many years of following the company, I just accept that they're not perfect. They're going to make head-scratching moves. They're going to crap out Excitebots in North America, leaving it to die. But then, on the other hand, they give a team like Monster Games the resources to make a game like Excitebots, which is without a doubt my favorite racing of the past decade not named Mario Kart.

There's no grand point to this, other than I guess you could just call me an easy going and complacent Nintendo fan. I'm not too downtrodden about what they do, and I usually accept their faults and move on. I might, on occasion, be easily excitable, but at the end of it all, I just look forward to games that I'll likely adore. That being said, if they don't bring that Kirby Wii and DS game over to North America, I'm going to be pissed.

Anyway, here's what you can look forward to this week on Nintendo World Report:

  • Aaron checked out The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D recently, and he got to chat with Nintendo's Dan Owsen about a bunch of cool things. Coverage of that will start very soon.
  • James Charlton and his merry band of Cafe dreamers (yours truly included) have brainstormed several ways to use the system's potential touch screen controller.
  • Zach Miller, Pedro Hernandez, and I are doing the first-ever week-long Extra Life. We're looking at five Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles games. You've likely heard of most of them, though we'll do our best to surprise you. Cowabunga and make sure you always pick Donny since he has the best range.
  • On the review front, we have a couple 3DS reviews in the pipeline. Josh is playing Dream Trigger 3D, Andy is adventuring through LEGO Pirates, and Matt Blundon should be digging into Spongebob Squigglepants.
  • Andy's also playing some tennis in Sega's Virtua Tennis 4, which oddly enough doesn't feature motion controls on Wii. Danny Bivens is rocking LEGO Pirates on Wii, but he'll likely be sidetracked by Pandora's Tower, coming out on May 26, since he's all cool and living in Japan. Jerk...
  • We'll also start having PrE3 coverage starting up very soon. We'll be making predictions and recapping what we know about games likely to be at the show.

The way I see it, Nintendo is like that passive/aggressive friend you have. At times, they piss you off to no end and make you wonder why they act that way. Then they do these neat and great things and things are forbidden for a while, and you just enjoy their company. I too love video games so I don't dive into the whole console war issue, but I will agree that games don't get me excited as much as Nintendo's own entries. They mean a lot to me and I am always wondering what they will do next.

This looks to be like a solid week of content!

The last few episodes of Newscast have really started to grate on my ears, not because you guys are cutting Nintendo too much slack, but more because of the incessant negative tone of the show.  God knows that Nintendo has a lot they can be criticized for (and should get), but you might want to sit down and actually try and listen to one of your last few episodes.  It sounds like one of your hosts had to watch while Nintendo kicked their puppy.

Clarification, Virtua Tennis 4 doesn't feature motion controls in 98% of the game, but they do have their own separate mode which basically contains nothing but exhibition play.

That's a fair point, and one that I'm pretty aware of as well. It's a fine line that we tread when we try to get excited about the new console only to end up shitting on the current one. Appreciate the feedback though, and I for one will attempt to be a little more aware of that as I record.

That said, it's kind of hard to deny that most of my love for Nintendo (and perhaps gaming in general) is strongly rooted in nostalgia, which means that whatever they're doing nowadays will just never stand up.

AilingforaleMay 23, 2011

I spend a good chuck of my work day, sometimes, supporting Nintendo to P60 fanboys and parents who really only know what thier kids ask for.  It does drive me nuts to really (and this is just myself probably) only have a few handfull of games to point out to people when they are considering buying a console.  That's how other people tend to take it.  Personaly, all those Marios and the Twilight Princess (plus others) were well worth buying the Wii for me, I loved those games, even if there wasn't enough of them.  I just don't see the games on the other consoles like those that Nintendo makes.  I really think this "Project Cafe" (if done right) could really be the shot in the arm Nintendo would like to get those other gamers out there that maybe aren't as impressed with the Halo's or God of War games when they could be play'n Mario or Kirby when they are done frag'n people on Modern Warfare 3.

CericMay 23, 2011

I just got Jungle Beat and its hard now not to be negative at the Wii after playing it.  I mean the game is within spitting distance of Galaxy but thats not why I'm posting.

It be cool if you got a Mii of each of the contributors then Put their predictions by it like this, I couldn't find my Mii pic so a place holder and I can't seem to get borders on this table...

Before E3...

Secret Feature is that it will go beyond Revultions axed Waffle capabilities and make toast

"Cafe, Wohooo" in a Mario Voice, with optional others for keypress combinations.  Will be the Startup sound.

Sluggy Touch, the Feel a Slug Feel control game will be at launch.

The Controller are really motion enabled Konga's.

After and During E3 as things get proved Disapproved but with X and Checks instead of Smileys (or something else more thematically correct for the site.)

I get the apologist label whenever I talk about how there are a lot of (sometimes flawed) Wii games that interest and attract me.  That's ok though. I'd rather be an apologist who celebrates what he enjoys than someone who craps all over the games that other people enjoy though.

Wii: The graphics kind of suck, motion control is terribly over-rated, and third party support is limited at best. Yet it's still a sweet console with enough awesome games to keep me busy for years!

StogiMay 23, 2011

Can't wait to hear what you guys think about the Cafe's possibilities. Should make for an interesting read.

There has to be a middle ground between apologist and hater. I think the Newscast crew, and the staff in general, does a good job of staying in that zone. It's just that at the moment there's really no reasonable way to be positive about the current state of the Wii.

The Wii is a Backog Play Motivator with Savor Enhancer :D

...by being positive about Skyward Sword. I still don't understand the overwhelming negativity over this game.

Skyward Sword isn't coming out for 6 months (not confirmed, but I don't see any chance of it coming out before November), and we haven't had any real info on it in almost a year. I'm very positive about it, but there really isn't anything to say about it right now.

I have a feeling it's going to get a lot easier to be positive about Nintendo in about 15 days.

Mop it upMay 23, 2011

I understand how you feel, it is kind of annoying to be labeled as an apologist just because you don't spend every waking moment complaining about what went wrong with the Wii and just want to enjoy the games on it. I'm not happy with some of the choices Nintendo made with the Wii, but at the end of the day, it still has by far the most games I want to play.

For what it's worth, I think I'm the only one on staff who genuinely really enjoyed Twilight Princess (and hasn't erased that fact from their memory).  Seems that the game takes a TON of flack in retrospect, which is probably where a lot of the negativity on Skyward Sword comes from.

I really wish I could get past the opening and replay Twilight Princess. I've tried many times. It doesn't work. I just get bored.

Hey, I loved Twilight Princess to death, regardless of what people say about it :p

You know ironically I think I could do the First half again.  I really liked the First half felt motivated and invested but, the second half was just a chore.

Wait wouldn't that make us Protoman?

I like Twilight Princess too. If it weren't for the art style and a few slow and tedious parts, it would be right up there with Ocarina of Time.

AilingforaleMay 24, 2011

I put my support behind Twilight Princess.  That game was great and now for $20 I feel kind of angry that it's not selling well enough to stay at the $50 mark.  That was a very fun game, another in the line, I know, but I will be picking me up some skyward sword whenever they decide to put it out without hesitation.

No game that released in November of 2006 should still be selling for $50 in my opinion.  That's one of my biggest frustration with Nintendo is that they rarely drop prices on games.  I'm thrilled to see a budget line, although I would be pretty surprised if they added anything to the lineup anytime soon.

NeoStar9XMay 24, 2011

I've listen to the Newscast several times now and generally I think the show is okay. However count me in as another that finds the overall tone to just to negative. Not that Nintendo doesn't do things that they shouldn't be called out on. Sometimes though I get the feeling that the various host just don't want to be doing the show at times. That they rather be talking about something else. It's this reason I can't listen to the show regularly as I just don't want to deal with it on a constant basis.

I generally listen to Nintendo podcast because I find that Nintendo offers most of the games and styles I tend to like. I grew up on the NES and SNES. For a while I really into the PS1 and PS2 but once I got a Cube most of mine time was there. I have a Wii, 360, PC, and PS3 but the Wii has the most games and has gotten the most play. I'm not against other topics but the constant negativity is why I've tuned out other Nintendo podcast and generally every other system podcast. Especially because after the negativity starts it evolves into actual insults aimed at actual Nintendo fans. Other podcast about other systems just seems to take insults toward Nintendo and it's fans as a must have. I'd like to point out IGN's Nintendo podcast. After Matt C and Mark Bozon left (negativity had really started in their final shows) the next set of host just outright started insulting Nintendo fans and not in a joking manner (in their minds they thought they were joking) that it caused a mini-meltdown in regard to how people viewed that podcast and that section of IGN in general. Do I think that'll happen with the Newscast? I don't think so but really I see what it could lead to.

As suggested I do think those on the Newscast really should sometimes site down and try to listen to some of the episodes.

CericMay 24, 2011

I think they Newscast needs to break out with more of its own formula and features to keep things interesting.

Yeah, the Newscast at times falls into the rut of being "RFN Jr." which is not flattering to the show.

Aren't we all 1UP Yours Jr?

I've never actually listened to that one so I wouldn't know.  Their really isn't much you can do to tweak the podcast format at times.  Though I'm still waiting for my Newscast Zelda Smackdown Special and maybe a Church of Pikming Service.
