IE Magazine runs a story about Nintendo franchises and their future on GameCube.

Although no real news is disclosed in this report, this story shows that the mainstream press is starting to take Nintendo seriously. Bellow are a few quotes that best capture the story's message:

Peter Main: "We combined more than a dozen lush backgrounds from the most popular Nintendo games and enhanced them with state-of-the-art graphics and special features to create a frantic, frenzied romp that will leave players wanting more."

Shigeru Miyamoto: "Thinking about what would be fun is our fundamental aim, and with the very imaginative Pikmin adventure, we have created a new genre of gameplay unlike anything players have seen before,"

George Harrison: "GameCube was built to bring games like this [Pikmin] to our customers."

"There's no real cost difference to market an original game versus a game based on an existing franchise. It's all a matter of the approach we take. Our marketing budgets are based on what we feel the potential of the game is. The games we believe will sell one million units or more obviously receive the largest marketing and advertising budgets."

"We need to offer games that are truly unique to our systems in order to give consumers the best reasons to purchase our systems. The cost of developing new games is extremely high. It's less of a risk to release a game that already has an established following, but Nintendo understands the need to experiment by developing and releasing entirely new types of games,"

"...Pikmin, however, is the only truly new and original game, with all new characters, that we've created thus far for GameCube. I think as the developers become more familiar with the machine, many more unique and new types of games will follow in the future..."

Nintendo is really trying to underline its goal of originality. Mr. Harrison points out that Pikmin is the only fully original title on the GameCube so far, which is quite amazing, as up until now, Nintendo seemed to be ignoring the fact. Harrison has also displayed that Nintendo does understand the financial situation around unique games, and assures Nintendo fans everywhere that money will not be a problem for unique titles. At one point, the story even states that Pikmin will be backed by a large sum of advertisement money.

Nintendo's compromise of original as well as classic gameplay options on the 'Cube should make everyone happy. Let's hope Nintendo can convince some 3rd parties into following Nintendo into uncharted territory.
