Some information on the 64DD's network. Could it be a testing ground for what Nintendo is planning with Dolphin?

In Japan, Nintendo is planning to launch an online community with the ill-fated N64 add-on the 64DD. Their ambitions are high for this network and if it is a success we may see a similar approach to the Dolphin's network capabilities. Thanks to Core Magazine for the story.

As most of you already know, Recruit and Nintendo are currently working on an N64 online community for the 64DD dubbed Randnet. The network, which is currently set to begin on December 1st in Japan, is currently being tested in Japan.

From what we were told this morning, Nintendo is planning to begin taking preorders for a special Randnet 64DD starter kit in Japan. The kit itself will include an 64DD system, N64 modem, 4MB ram pak, and a special 64DD - Randnet access disk. Thereby, users can go online and access an exclusive 64DD online community. The special online 64DD home will feature special 64DD downloads for titles like FZero Expansion Disk, Mario Artist, and other assorted 64DD launch titles.

Preorders for the special starter park are set to begin on November 11th in Japan, with the network scheduled to go live on December 1st. At the moment, Nintendo still hasn't confirmed the price for the special starter pak. Nevertheless, Nintendo representatives have confirmed that Randnet monthly charges will be as follows:

1,500 yen per month - For 64DD/Modem hardware owners

2,500 yen per month - For people who rent just the N64 modem

3,300 yen per month - For people who rent the 64DD/Modem

Furthermore, Nintendo representatives have confirmed that they're currently planning to release the special 64DD-Randnet starter kit in limited quantities. Some insiders have suggested that initial quantities through January 2000 would be less than 100,000 units. Stick to Core for continuing coverage including 64DD reviews as we await our own respective units.
