New details are out on Square-Enix's new hand drawn RPG

Project Octopath Traveler received new details on its story, style and gameplay today. During the Nintendo Direct, Nintendo announced that the game will release worldwide in 2018 exclusively on Switch. A demo has released on the eShop.

The style of the game is considered a "HD-2D" game, with a combination of CG and pixel art. You can play as one of eight different characters, each with their own special abilities and traits. The stories will also play out differently based on the character you chose. If you go with the Warrior, you can challenge anybody to a battle even if they are an NPC. Should you choose to pick the Dancer, you can use the Allure trait to get other characters to follow you, not only in the world map, but in battle as well.

The battle system is turned-based, along with new mechanics added. One is the boost system where you accumulate points, so you can boost your attack or provide useful aid.

This is a really great demo, I've only played the Bravely Default 2 demo but you can recognise the Bravely Default DNA right away with things like the UI. The brave/default system in the 3DS demo seemed pretty pointless to me, it felt like a zero sum game or maybe giving me too much choice is a better way to put it but Octopath gets rid of defaults which seemed from the 3DS demo to just slow down the game, instead Octopath gives enemies a shield you can break by hitting their weak point a certain number of times. Then you have a window of opportunity where the enemy can't act and you do extra damage. It's already clicking with me more than Bravely Default.

Plus the music is incredible, and the game's story seems varied and not full of RPG cliches as you have the eight different stories to choose from.

I dont like turn based battle RPGs, but I will give the demo a try, just to see what the game is like

I found the art style of the game curious when it was first shown in January but seeing it now I am really impressed by it. The graphics may have sold me more on trying out this game than the actual gameplay. Way to go, Square! You've succeeded in graphics over gameplay again! The footage of the character walking in a cave with the light and darkness moving along that 2D landscape was inspiring. It's got me imagining a re-release of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars in this style. It's like a vision of the future where gaming never went beyond 16 bits and stayed in 2D.

However, the alternate paths and options do sound pretty neat as well and it would seem to create a lot of replay value to try out alternate paths with different characters. I'm definitely interested in this title but I'm not quite fully sold on it yet.

I agree with Khushrenada that this artstyle has great potential for remakes as well as new games. The game looks like something you'd dream would one day be possible in 2D games, back in the early/mid 1990s.

The preview was confusing however. In some ways it made it seem like the game was close to release (such as having a demo). In other ways, the working title aspect (despite having a trademark!) and the survey, make it seem like the game has a good ways to go. I would like to think early 2018, no later than March, but maybe there's still a ton of development ahead.
