The latest entry in the Intelligent Systems series is getting a 3D facelift.

The next Fire Emblem game will be for the 3DS, Nintendo announced at their 3DS Conference today.

Few details were offered on the latest entry in the strategy RPG series, but the video shown indicated that the game will not stray far from series conventions. The graphics closely resembled the fully polygonal GameCube and Wii entries in the series.

The Fire Emblem franchise has seen many titles released on Nintendo handhelds over the last decade, so the series' move to 3DS is not a major surprise.

No release details were announced for Fire Emblem 3DS.

Here's hoping it will be a brand new game, instead of another remake

It seemed to be.

Big fan of the Fire Emblem series, so this is excellent news.

Shameful admission: I haven't even started the Wii game yet - although I have enjoyed the GBA, GameCube, and DS titles.

Eh, I haven't either. It just came so close to when I beat the GC one I never got around to it.

The GameCube game is my favorite in the series, but these games play best on a handheld.  So I think this new game could be great.

The date is given as spring 2012 in Japan and it is a new game which features 2/d maps with 3/d battles and also includes wi-fi play for co-op which I believe is new to the series.

The bad news is no mention of the remake FE 2 (DS) which has been out in Japan over a year or so.  Might be another Japanese exclusive series at the rate it's going.
