Junichi Masuda discusses why 2D was best for the latest generation of Pokémon.

Many people wondered as to why Nintendo decided to release Pokémon Black and Pokémon White on the Nintendo DS as opposed to the Nintendo 3DS. When questioned on the matter, Junichi Masuda, the director of the most recent generation of Pokémon games, explained why his team decided to go with the Nintendo DS instead of the Nintendo 3DS.

"The main idea behind the Pokemon series, what's most important for it, is to have as many people be able to play it as possible," he explained. "It has to be on hardware that has lots of units and people worldwide can play it together with each other.”

In addition to this, Masuda also went on to reveal as to why the games use 2D sprites. "One of the reasons for sticking with the 2D Pokemon images is, with the 2D, it really depends on who draws it,” he said. “There's a lot of personality that's drawn from the 2D images, whereas with 3D, it's the same model used for everything, so the personality doesn't really come out. One of the reasons we've stuck with 2D is to get a more individual feel with it."

Pokémon Black and Pokémon White are set to release in North America this coming Sunday, March 6.

Yeah, it's a pity that internet capability and online play are features that are currently technically impossible for today's consoles to handle.  Likewise, it's a pity that the Wii has sold as poorly as it did, or else there would actually be a fanbase for this game on a Nintendo console.  I guess we can only dream and hope that the next generation of consoles can match the technical power of today's handhelds.

Quotes like this are why I really hate Nintendo sometimes.  They are so close-minded and unwilling to take even the slightest leap of faith with so many of their established franchises.  If Nintendo were to hire on some competent online programmers and designers (and were willing to actually put money into the project), they could really put out a stellar console Pokemon RPG.  But I suppose if they did that, then their asset-recycling-happy handheld teams would actually have to put in matching effort with the handheld installments.

You're clearly taking it out of context to make an argument against a point he wasn't making. It was why it's on the DS and not the 3DS. Nintendo has made it very clear over the years that Pokemon is primarily a handheld-based franchise, which is why he didn't even mention the Wii. I don't fully agree with that view, but it's the way it is, and I've come to terms with that.

The thing is, the very reasons this guy uses to justify why it isn't on the 3DS could be easily used in favor of making a Pokemon RPG game on the Wii or Wii2, yet he's against that.  It just doesn't make any sense.

As far as I can tell, Nintendo's reasoning seems to be that the series is geared toward multiplayer, and though Nintendo is (slowly) moving toward more and better online implementation, they're still very much in favor of local multiplayer, which wouldn't work well with a console version of the game. This can all be traced back to how Japan-centric the company is.

I think the argument fans have would be the best way for nintendo to show off a good console based online game  would be making a pokemon mmo, and any team could easily make it so you can transfer data from a hand held to the console and vice versa. With the DS generation of pokemon games I have found myself with an issue trading between my pokemon games, personally if there was a way to put them onto the wii and then trade or w/e to a different game i wouldnt have much of an issue owning what is soon to be three games.

an argument for what im saying, and i think many others are feeling/saying is... since the N64/GBC you could transfer data from console to hand held game (i personally loved playing the gbc mario tennis and then playing with my guy on the N64) though that had issues with the N64<>GBC transfer (you need a 40$ controller pack) and a slight issue along the same lines with the GCN <> GBA (30$ link cable), on the other hand with the Wii <> DS, or maybe 3DS (i only heard of the one way transfer for a mii) you connect them wirelessly, and that type of dynamic in a pokemon game could give people a reason to pick up a hand held...

i think this is what broodwars is getting at, on the other hand insanolord does have a point with how nintendo things are designed for the clustered streets of a metropoli like tokyo-to osaka-fu and  kyoto-fu, do the rural areas of japan like okinawa prefecture have broad band yet? id imagine the only limits nintendo has with an mmo is the japanese infrastructure. because in truth, it is a world community in this day and age

sorry for wall of text ^^;;

What I get out if this is that, because they wanted to stick with 2D sprites, there was nothing to show off the 3D of the 3DS, so they developed the game on DS because it's cheaper and they could get away with it. It isn't like people who buy a 3DS can't play the game, so I wouldn't be surprised if it received a small boost in sales during the 3DS launch week, and here in North America a lot of people will probably buy it when they go to get a 3DS.

I'd say that's true before the Wii existed. The Wii allows you to store data onto a Wii Remote, so if you wanted to trade and battle with your friend(s), you could store your Pokémon on the Wii Remote and bring it over to their place. Using an SD card could also be another method of it as well. It may not be quite as seemless as having a DS with the game in it, but it would work well enough to make it worthwhile.

I agree with Pokemon Director. Pokemon mean to be traditional and this is the reason why 2d sprite are good for them. Don't get me wrong, 3D pokemon like in Pokemon Battle Revolution also look awesome, but for a handle system like Nintedo DS, 2d pokemon with hand drawing as he said is better for the game itself. Pokemon always changing, that's why we never get bore with it like some online game for the PC. It is an interesting game because it is not addicted in a negative way but we always enjoy the challenge each time we play it. For the up coming Nintendo 3DS, I still hope that Pokemon company will add some more 3D factors and create a mixing between 2D and 3D technology as well. And one more thing, Pokemon is for hand held system which is go along with the trainer everywhere just like a digital pokeball, this's why it will be a terrible idea if pokemon become a MMO for PC system like another online game, it doesn't has anything to do with global trading and dream world which are good aspects of new generation though.

Also, I've always been against the idea of a Pokemon MMO. MMOs are big and shiny, but they're also colossal headaches in design, support, and player experience. PLUS, Pokemon's userbase has a HUGE segment in younger users, and an MMO does so much to utterly lock that Pokemon fanbase out.

That's why I'm in favor of making a single-player (with online multiplayer) console RPG instead.  I can't stand MMOs, and frankly I don't think Nintendo will ever do one.

Also, considering "traditional" in the Japanese marketplace seems to equate to "never changing in over 20 years ala Dragon Quest", I don't want Pokemon to be "traditional".  I want it to grow and evolve into a bigger and better experience across multiple platforms.  Series stagnate when they remain the same for long periods of time (once again, see Dragon Quest).  While I had a fun time with Diamond and Pearl back on the DS, in the end it was just more of the same experience I had back with Red and Blue.  I want to see something genuinely new with this franchise, and I don't think that will happen until Nintendo brings the franchise to a platform with new possibilities like the Wii or its successor.  The longer Nintendo keeps it to roughly the same format (which it would be even on the 3DS), the more they have an excuse to be lazy, something I'm seeing too much of in Nintendo this generation.

Yeah I also want basically a 3rd person Pokemon adventure on the home console. Ive wanted that game since the N64!

Nintendo will NEVER release one of the main Pokemon RPG titles on a home console. Pokemon is meant to be portable and played on the handheld. How else are the kids suppose to download the Pokemon events in store? Lug their Wii system with them to Toysrus? LOL.

Speaking of Toysrus, here are some of the preorder gifts some of the major retailers will be giving away on Sunday.

One-time use download codes that people can use to download the character DLC from the online store, the same as any other DLC on home consoles other than the Wii.  Hell, Nintendo could even have something like the Pokewalker where you can carry it with you and "catch" these Pokemon at the stores, and then transfer them to your console back home via Bluetooth.  Or if Nintendo really wants to be lazy (which wouldn't be unlikely), you could "catch" these Pokemon with a handheld version of the series and then transfer them up to your Wii game.  There is precedence for this with the Nintendo 64 Pokemon Stadium game and the old Transfer Pak, where you could transfer your Pokemon from the handheld games into the Stadium game.

Honestly, all these reasons why a real Pokemon RPG "can't" be on home consoles just come off as excuses.  And when Nintendo makes them, they just come off as lazy.  But hey, that's what I've come to expect from Nintendo when it comes to this series, where the home consoles are apparently only worthy of half-assed Stadium games or one-off oddities like Pokemon Rumble; Hey You Pikachu; and Pokemon Snap.
