2009: The Games We Loved

Art Style: PiCTOBiTS

What happens when the only thing we can agree on is that there were a lot of good games last year?

Art Style: PiCTOBiTS is a game that fills a niche that literally no one asked to be filled. A puzzle game in which you move around pixels to clear areas of color, and in doing so complete a pixel-art sprite of Mario? Preposterous! Good thing it's fun eh?

Jon Lindemann: Pictobits is a near-perfect DSiWare game. It draws heavily on Nintendo nostalgia, with the result of clearing each level being the completion of Nintendo-themed pixel art on the top screen. The chip-tune music is also heavily reminiscent of the 8-Bit era (if not earlier), completing a great package that also happens to be an extremely addictive "falling puzzle piece" game in its own right. Add in the fact that each level also has a "Dark" version that's diabolically difficult, and Pictobits is easily one of the best DSiWare titles of 2009.

Words do not do this justice. I tried.

Neal Ronaghan: If I could get away with picking a series without James getting annoyed, I would have selected the entire Art Style series on DSiWare. Instead, I'm going to go with my favorite: Art Style: Pictobits. It's a Tetris-like puzzle game with an NES aesthetic. It uses Nintendo's own NES games, ranging from Super Mario Bros. to Devil World, as inspiration as you fill in pixelated characters from the games as music develops in the background. The sound design is awesome, which isn't that big of a surprise considering it's made by Skip. The unlockable levels and the tough yet fair difficulty curve will keep you coming back for more. This is an excellent game.
