2009: The Games We Loved

Flipnote Studio

What happens when the only thing we can agree on is that there were a lot of good games last year?

Flipnote Studio is the evolution of Pictochat. Instead of drawing a static image of...uh...Yoshi and his...ah...tongue, you can animate your...art by drawing one frame at a time.

Oh cool it's Sonic running! This is really well done. OH GOD, NO!

Jon Lindemann: Flipnote Studio is an example of a title that can only be done on Nintendo DS. It takes a simple concept - flip animation - and turns it into an entertaining application that lets you take your animation as far as you'd like. You can create a mini-movie with hundreds of frames, add music using the DSi microphone, transmit your work to a friend's DSi, or upload it to the Flipnote Hatena website so that others can view it online. Nintendo artists have posted some amazing creations, and amateurs have posted some incredible work as well. And best of all, Flipnote Studio is a free download from the DSiWare Shop. It doesn't get any better than that!

It's a cat on a skateboard. Meow!

Zach Miller: For all you artists out there, FlipNote Studio may be the best thing since sliced bread. Nintendo has given us all portable animation software that's surprisingly robust, with an online sharing component and the ability to create GIFs from an SD card…for free. You don't see Adobe doling out these kinds of gems.

What makes FlipNote impressive is that it's simple to use, but utilizes so many modern graphics design tools, like separate layers and scaling effects. You can create virtually anything with FlipNote, even photographic animations. And of course, for the more perverted among us, FlipNote is the next horrible evolution of...Editors Note: We are not using that word here!
