2009: The Games We Loved

NyxQuest: Kindred Spirits

What happens when the only thing we can agree on is that there were a lot of good games last year?

NyxQuest lets you control the winged girl Nyx, on a, uh, quest to find her missing friend. Not only is this a platformer in which you can fly, but you also get to use the powers of the Greek gods. I have the POWER!

Zach Miller: Nintendo can thank its short-lived WiiWare demos for my purchase of this game. NyxQuest is a stunningly beautiful and engaging side-scroller with a twist: while you control Nyx with the analog stick and A button, you can use the power of the Wii Remote pointer to move environmental objects to help your heroine and hinder enemies in her path. The game is at its best when the player is asked to multi-task a multitude of threats, which occasionally includes multi-headed hydras. Dragging blocks, while deflecting fireballs and avoiding enemies, is typical of the feats you'll accomplish. The music is haunting and the aesthetic is like nothing you've ever seen, and I can't recommend it highly enough. If you have a friend, one player can control Nyx while the other controls the power of the pointer.

So that's why they call them ruins.

Neal Ronaghan: I liked World of Goo a whole lot, but I wasn't wowed by a WiiWare game until NyxQuest. It has a haunting score, gorgeous graphics, and fun puzzle-based platforming. It can also only be done on the Wii. I love the game's "pat your head while rubbing your belly" nature as you control Nyx with the analog stick and use the pointer to make use of her God Powers. The game has a lackluster finale, but its overall quality makes that forgiveable. Also, the unlockable bonus level is pretty damn cool. I can't wait to see what Over the Top Games does next.
