2009: The Games We Loved

Wii Sports Resort

What happens when the only thing we can agree on is that there were a lot of good games last year?

Wii Sports is the game that sold the Wii to your grandmother. It's the game that turned Nintendo's quirky controller into a sensation. It's the game that gave rise to the term "blue ocean". Nintendo's goal was for Wii Sports Resort to do for Wii MotionPlus what Wii Sports did for the Wii Remote. While MotionPlus might not be setting the world on fire in the same way, Wii Sports Resort managed to replace Wii Sports as the de facto "party game" for the console.

Jared Rosenberg: This mini-game collection is pure Nintendo fun. To tell you the truth, this game makes my 2009 favorites list simply because of the speed slice and archery games. While simple, quickly slicing different objects with a sword is amazingly addictive and a wonderfully fun multiplayer challenge. Meanwhile, never has a game simulated shooting an arrow at strawberry shortcake with such style. Wii Sports Resort does a terrific job at showing off Wii MotionPlus, and from an overall standpoint is another multiplayer powerhouse.

E3 Media & Business Summit 2008:
No mortal can make Frisbeeā„¢ go where they want.

James Jones: Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort have similar aims: create a series of compartmentalized experiences that show what a new control technology can do. Like Wii Sports, not all games in Wii Sports Resort achieve this goal. Cycling comes to mind as being particularly unpleasant in a way not dissimilar to Boxing in the original Wii Sports. However, the majority of the experiences Wii Sports Resort offers highlight Wii MotionPlus' capabilities. Where Resort succeeds, and where its predecessor fails, is in offering a complete game. The number and overall depth of its mini-games makes Wii Sports Resort much more than a tech demo.
