2009: The Games We Loved

Punch-Out!!

What happens when the only thing we can agree on is that there were a lot of good games last year?

A game so exciting it had to be exclaimed twice, Punch-Out!! is another example of Nintendo reviving one of its revered NES franchises. Punch-Out!! proved that even after two decades, beating up ethnic stereotypes never gets old.

Pedro Hernandez: For many, Punch-Out!! for Wii is like a dream finally made real. It's a title that preserves the beauty of Punch-Out!!'s simple yet incredibly difficulty gameplay while putting on a spectacular show. The characters are larger than ever with personalities that are extremely engaging, whether they're delivering the pain or you're beating them to a pulp. While gameplay of the original title has survived the test of time, Punch-Out!! also features many extra modes that guarantee that the disc will be spinning in your Wii for a long time.

TELL THE KAISER WHO SENT YOU!

Neal Ronaghan: I've been waiting for this game since I first played Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! when I was little, and I was extremely happy to say that it did not disappoint. Next Level Games essentially remade the classic game and added more humor, style, and depth. The additions of Title Defense mode and a practice mode helped the game soar over its predecessors and, whether your nostalgia likes it or not, made it the best in the series. While the two-player mode and the motion controls aren't too great, the main game is aces all around, and was - without a doubt - my favorite Wii game of 2009.
