2009: The Games We Loved

A Boy and His Blob

What happens when the only thing we can agree on is that there were a lot of good games last year?

WayForward Technology's Sean Velasco was a fan of the 1989 NES game A Boy and His Blob: Trouble on Blobonia. He wanted to recreate the classic NES title with modern visuals so the current generation of gamers could enjoy the game as much as he did. If the glowing reviews - praising everything from the game's artistic style to its gameplay - are any indication, WayForward's A Boy and His Blob was a roaring success.

Grant Buell: A Boy and His Blob is an original, engaging puzzle platformer for the Wii. The game excels in forcing you to stop and think about how to get through levels, always utilizing your blob's various forms in unique and fun ways. The hand-drawn graphics are infinitely charming, and the minimalistic sound design and music deliver a polished and relaxing experience. The Wii excels at 2D reimaginings of classics, and this title has a place among the best on the system.

Not an approved use for Blob!

Neal Ronaghan: I was enamored with this game when I saw it at E3, and this infatuation held up until the after I played through it. A Boy and His Blob is another game, like Punch-Out!!, that takes an old NES game and makes it modern and fantastic. The interaction between the boy and the blob is adorable, and the gorgeous 2D art was some of the best of 2009. Its gameplay is a wonderful mix of puzzle and platforming that might be considered too easy by some, but the charm of the game and the challenge of unlocking all the extra levels more than makes up for it.
