2009: The Games We Loved

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars

What happens when the only thing we can agree on is that there were a lot of good games last year?

When it was announced at E3 2008, Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars was really only given a passing mention. It's a shame, because it captures everything fun about the GTA series, without all the muss and fuss of headshots and RC airplanes. Wildly enjoyable and saturated with a twisted wit, Chinatown Wars is unlike anything else on the Nintendo DS.

Jared Rosenberg: Chinatown Wars feels a lot like the very first Grand Theft Auto, and that is a compliment. The up-in-the-air overhead view from the first two games is back and it works perfectly. The game is filled with exhilarating car chases and some very cool touch screen mini-games (scratching a lotto ticket rocks). Liberty City from Grand Theft Auto 4 has been shrunk down, but it still feels alive. A well-written story, exciting missions, and lots of fun make Chinatown Wars a must buy for DS owners.

A dream fulfilled.

Jonathan Metts: Its special aura may be diluted with its port to Sony's PSP, but this surprisingly great GTA title still works best on Nintendo DS. It's also way funnier than the latest console edition of the series, Grand Theft Auto IV.
