The group is focusing on the Wii's casual market; is aiming to be "the biggest developer" on the console.

Popcorn Arcade label gains own specialist Wii Studio and more staff

Stourbridge, England -- Data Design Interactive a successful video games publisher and games developer is pleased to announce that they have taken another step in their campaign to be the biggest developer for Nintendo Wii console. They have set up a dedicated studio for their Wii label Popcorn Arcade, and hired four more team members further bolstering the companies increasingly large work force.

The new division will be headed up by Robert Dorney, who has been with the company for nine years.

Stewart Green MD of Data Design Interactive, said:

“With the incredible success of the Nintendo Wii’s casual gaming market, we want our Popcorn Arcade brand to be the must-have purchase for the casual gamer. We have 14 titles that we want to ship this year, four of which already have gold master status and another 3 have been submitted to Nintendo for final approval. To keep up with this staggering momentum, we have set up a new development studio, where a brand new team can immediately start working on existing titles and start developing our planned 30 future titles over the next 12 months".

What Data Design fails to mention is that all 14 games are ports of old PlayStation 2 games (most coming out in 2005 and 2006, a couple came out in 2004) and that none of them were released outside of Europe (games like Ninjabread Man, Billy the Wizard: Rocket Broomstick Racing, Myth Makers Super Kart GP, Action Girlz Racing). Basically, they are a shovelware company. I'm glad for any and all support the Wii gets, but no one will consider Data Design a great developer.

Maybe they really will become the biggest developer on Wii... based on total number of games released. The question is whether any of those games are worth playing? As with kids' games, the casual label is not a free pass on quality.

Considering the amount of crap that will be released for whatever console is currently the market leader (look at the PS2), any company that is looking to be the biggest developer on the console has a pretty big goal, even if their plan is to re-release 12 different versions of Pong each year.

Just once, I want to see a company who says, "We plan to release very few, immensely high-quality titles with all our heart and soul poured into them."

A game company like Pixar, who releases few movies but they always range from decent to excellent. I'm sure their sales will be better than a company who farts out 5 titles every three months, all of which suck ass.

Actually, that's about to change as they now release a new movie each year, instead of once every two or 3 years.

But enough about that.

I find funny how we criticize some third party games for not being the best, yet many of them put far more effort into it than any of these shovelware companies.

Not according to the vast majority of people and me. Maybe to you thought it did. It may not have been their best it was still a high quality CGI film. face-icon-small-tongue.gif

Cars was OK. It wasn't a bad film but it was no "The Incredibles" Pixars best film to date IMHO.

If only all films were at least as sucky as Cars.
