Nintendo Conference News

by Mike Hrusecky - May 16, 2001, 11:42 am EDT

Nintendo just completed their Conference and we have the skinny!

Nintendo's Conference lasted approximately 90 minutes and showcased a lot of in-game footage, as opposed to Xbox's outing which was more talk than action.

When Miyamoto took the stage he first demonstrated the GameCube's controller, which has only minor modifications to the controller we knew. New are the features added to the shoulder buttons, which can be described as 2 buttons in 1. When enough pressure is applied to the button, you can get an extra "click" which could be used for another in-game purpose.

Featured prominently was an in-game demonstration of Luigi's Mansion and their new concept game Pikmin.

Luigi's Mansion is just what we expected. Mario has been captured and it's up to Luigi to rescue his brother inside the haunted mansion. At his disposal is a flashlight and vacuum to shock and absorb the ghosts that lurk about.

Pikmin can be summarized as an advanced Lemmings concept. A tiny visitor has landed on a foreign planet, and with the help of native Pikmin creatures, large objects can be moved, bridges built, and enemies killed. The environment we've seen looks amazingly realistic, as if it were taking place in a forest field.

Nintendo also had footage of a number of other games, including but not limited to stock Zelda footage, Metriod Prime, Mickey, Wave Race, Smash Brothers, Donkey Kong Racing, F-Zero, and much more.

Also briefly shown was the bizarre-looking GameCube/DVD combo. It looked like an oversized, silver GameCube with a number of additional buttons on th front, and an arched top.

Pricing for the GameCube was not disclosed. It will be announced within the next week.

System availability:

Japan: September 14

North America: November 5 (beating Xbox)

Europe: 2002

The GameBoy Advance was oddly missing from the Conference, other than to reaffirm the GBA as being able to operate as a controller for the GameCube.

Following Nintendo's superior console outing, Peter Main and Shiggy took questions from the Press. Props to Max for plugging PGC and asking a question regarding the whereabouts of Mario. Nintendo answered stating that they'd be able to show more at SpaceWorld later this year, but did not firmly say Mario would make his presence felt.
