New 2D Pikmin Side-Scroller Announced For 3DS

It's the Flower Town sequel we never expected.

A brand new Pikmin adventure is heading to the 3DS in 2017. Players will be able to throw Pikmin around the stages by tapping the screen.

Unlike previous entries in the series, the new game is a two dimensional side-scroller. However, Olimar and his Pikmin buddies will behave just like you remembered. Red Pikmin are fire resistant and will help in fiery situations. Blue Pikmin will come in handy in the game's underwater stages. In addition, it will be beneficial that electricity doesn't slow yellow Pikmin down. It was noted in the latest Nintendo Direct that the game was designed with action in mind. The game's trailer also showed Pikmin collecting stones to construct a bridge and attacking familiar enemies.

The untitled Pikmin adventure features 2D action on both screens and debuts sometime next year.

The Lost Pikmin?!

Maybe not, but this game looks like it can be really cool.

Is this the Pikmin 4 game that was leaked as "almost done" over a year ago?

ejamerSeptember 01, 2016

I would prefer a Wii U sequel, using the same engine (and probably most of the same assets) as Pikmin 3... but this could still be very cool and it will be nice to see the franchise in a portable form.  Frankly, any news about a new Pikmin game is good news.

After recently getting 100% on Kirby Mass Attack I'm very excited for this.  Mass Attack was basically a 2D Pikmin and worked amazingly, and the gameplay shown in this trailer is already looking pretty similar to I expect big things from this title.

Just what the world needs. Yet another 2D platformer from Nintendo.

I say this as someone who loves 2D platformers.

Ian SaneSeptember 01, 2016

At first this really didn't sound up my alley but the trailer makes it look pretty good.  Touchscreen controls though. Bleh!!

Unfortunately this is almost certainly that "Pikmin 4" rumour and here it is not a late Wii U release or a NX launch title or even a proper Pikmin game at all.  And could Nintendo be more Nintendo then to think of a Pikmin spinoff and come up with 2D platformer?  Seriously, Nintendo, are you unaware of the jokes?

It looks like it might be fun though.  It's moderately on my radar.

I don't think this is Pikmin 4 or meant to be Pikmin 4. It's like how Metroid Prime wasn't Metroid 4 or 5. Or how Kirby has the main Dreamland type series but also branches off into other things like Canvas Curse or Epic Yarn. I see this as trying to expand the franchise and create a new play style from an existing property like Nintendo has done with many of their franchises. It's getting the Chibi-Robo treatment. After some 3D games, side-scroll that franchise and see what happens.

I'm sure we'll get a Pikmin 4 someday but there was a rumoured Pikmin game that we all assumed was Pikmin 4 and I figure that the rumours were about this game.  So an actual Pikmin 4 is probably years away.

Nintendo made specific reference to a game in development called "Pikmin 4" right after Miyamoto originally made his comments a while ago. I don't think it makes sense for this to be the game that he was talking about since this game's name is still TBA and it supposedly isn't being developed internally.

This good could be good, though I hope it isn't the rumoured Pikmin 4.

LemonadeSeptember 01, 2016

Im not a Pikmin fan, but this does look kind of good.

Luigi DudeSeptember 01, 2016

If there's a Pikmin 4 in development it's going to be an NX game running on Pikmin 3's engine.  Even if this game was the Pikmin game Miyamoto was talking about, that doesn't mean they're not working on a traditional Pikmin 4 for the NX.  It's not like it's a new thing for Nintendo to work on 2 different types of games for one franchise at the same time.

It would be one thing if this was a Nintendo Direct that had both 3DS and NX games being shown, but Nintendo hasn't even shown the NX in anyway yet so it's pointless for anyone to worry this means we wont get a real Pikmin.  For all we know Pikmin 4 could be an NX launch title that will be one of the first NX exclusive games they show at the big reveal event in the near future.  Until the NX is finally shown though, we just don't know.

In case anyone hasn't heard yet, there is now a petition to cancel this game...

I'm pretty sure that was a parody.

Yes, thats definitely not serious. I was worried there for a minute.

KhushrenadaSeptember 02, 2016

Ha ha ha. I liked that. That petition's good.

I LQTM'd.

As Ian Sane explained, the problem with it would be that it would mean Pikmin 4 would be coming later rather than sooner.
