Smash Bros. almost wasn't the only Nintendo mascot-fest on the block.

The Wonderful 101 was originally supposed to have a cast consisting largely of Nintendo characters, according to Director Hideki Kamiya.

He said that he "got an order from the president of Platinum Games, Tatsuya Minami, asking [him] to create a game idea that had an all-star cast of Nintendo characters," in addition to other characters that Kamiya didn't specify.

It was after the the project was put on hold and Kamiya returned to it that he decided to use the hero characters now in the game instead of a Nintendo-centric cast.

I'm glad they didn't stick with a Nintendo all-star cast. New characters allow you to try new things without the pressure of living up to history or an ideal.

Nintendo just does whatever the hell they want with their characters anyway.

Takashi Tezuka: Hmm, we need Mario to have a cape.
Shigeru Miyamoto: Fuck it. Give him a cape.

12 Years Later

Takashi Tezuka: Hmm, we need Mario to shoot water at things.
Shigeru Miyamoto: Fuck it. Let Mario shoot water at things.

Still, I'm glad Hideki Kamiya decided on an brand new cast. It makes the game more his own. I wouldn't mind Nintendo and Platinum Games revisiting the idea of an action-adventure games featuring Nintendo characters.

Nintendo NOT using their existing characters when they could have?  Now watch as the game doesn't sell well and discourages Nintendo from creating new IP in the future.

Interesting that it mentions Kamiya deciding to use original characters.  It's HIS call?  His boss told him to use Nintendo characters but he can just change his mind and not do that?  Cool!

I think Smash Brothers is enough for Nintendo character mash-ups, so I'm glad they went this route.
