Toss a disc, rescue a meerkat, or put out a fire...in the future.

This week in Nintendo downloads we have seven new games across the Nintendo digital platforms, with four for DSiWare and three for WiiWare. No Virtual Console games were released this week.

The first DSiWare game up this week is Flametail, a game set in the year 2099. The second DSiWare game this week is Don't Cross The Line, from Aksys Games. This puzzle game asks you to draw lines between identical shapes, while not crossing any lines in the process. The more quickly you can complete a stage the better a reward you will earn, including additional unlockable stages. Don't Cross The Line is available from the DSi Shop for 200 Nintendo DSi Points ($2).

The third game on DSiWare this week is Fire Panic, from Playtainment. The game places you in the role of a futuristic firefighter, extinguishing flames using the DS stylus. The game is only single-player. Fire Panic is available on the DSi Shop for 200 Nintendo DSi Points ($2).

The final DSiWare release this week is Flips: The Magic Faraway Tree, from Electronic Arts. This title is the latest in the Flips series of interactive books. This story takes place at a place called the Faraway Tree, where Joe, Bessie, Fanny, and Rick have some crazy adventures. Flips: The Magic Faraway Tree is available on the DSi Shop for 500 Nintendo DSi Points ($5).

The first WiiWare game this week is Reel Fishing Challenge II from Natsume, Inc. This single-player fishing simulator contains 30 missions and a realistic look and feel. Reel Fishing Challenge II is available from the Wii Shop Channel for 500 Wii Points ($5).

The final release this week on WiiWare is Zoo Disc Golf from Sonalysts, Inc. This disc golf title allows you to choose from various zoo animals to play as, including a penguin, a kangaroo, and a meerkat. No mention is made of whether or not this game supports Wii MotionPlus, as other Wii disc golf games such as Wii Sports Resort have done. The game has one 18-hole course, and supports up to 4 players. Zoo Disc Golf is available on the Wii Shop Channel for 1,000 Wii Points ($10).

Description: The year is 2099, and the solar system is littered with space junk. Be careful not to work yourself into a dead end, and don't let the hazard line that follows you catch up to your tail or reach any leftover garbage. Effectively burn up the floating garbage in the game's two modes - Space Tour and Time Limit - and earn new graphics and other surprises as you progress. I'm so sick of the insane lack of VC games. I can only stand so much WiiWare garbage.

Indeed.  At this point, I really wonder if we're at the mercy of Square-Enix and Nintendo getting along when it comes to the VC, as nearly all the remaining notable titles we're missing are owned by those two.

AVJune 07, 2010

Anyone else thinking Nintendo is saving up a big VC title for week of E3?

I am curious about Reel Fishing Challenge II as I enjoyed the fishing in Twilight Princess and since I sold that game I no longer have any fishing stuff of the Wii. I do have the wii points and $5 doesn't seem bad at all, but I don't know. I wonder if Zoo Disc Golf will have motion plus support, if not that's a stupid mistake. It doesn't mention it in the description.

There's not doubt in my mind that Nintendo's rationing their titles now, especially because iirc they really only have two big titles left to put on the service (excluding Earthbound, of course) that were released in North America: Yoshi's Island and Donkey Kong 64.  I wouldn't be surprised if we saw Yoshi's Island released to coincide with E3.

I'd love to see Pocky & Rocky 1 and 2 for SNES appear on the virtual console. And the two Mystical Ninja Goemon games for N64. And Castlevania 64, which was a good game despite popular opinion. Though some of those games required a controller pak to be able to even save the game... I'm sure a little tweaking wouldn't be too sinful considering the edits they've done to other games.
Also, it wouldn't be hard to get rare games like Yoshi's Safari working with the pointer. I can see them porting Shadows of the Empire, that was one of the big promo-N64 games of its time.

Of course, Yoshi's Island and DK64 are bigg'uns.

NinGurl69 *hugglesJune 07, 2010

Castlevania 64 Mighty Double Pack
Diddy Kong Racing
Some Car Adventure Racing
Mario Tennis
Super Mario All Stars
Goof Troop
The Adams Family
Guerilla War
CONTRA
Sprocket
BUBSY

Want some good WiiWare games too, like Riqa, Sadness, Robotech: Crystal Dreams, Catroots, Eternal Darkness, Dinosaur Planet, Resident Evil Zero, Broken Saints, Young Olympians, Raven Blade, Donkey Kong Racing, Kameo, and Final Fantasy 5373Z.

broodwarsJune 07, 2010

For the record, I was referring to strictly Nintendo-published big VC titles remaining.  I'd like to see Mario All Stars on there, but I have a feeling Nintendo won't want to canibalize the sales for NES Marios 1-3 so we probably won't see it.

I'd buy Diddy Kong Racing, but it's probably got problems with licensing issues because of Rare.

OH LOOK NO SHANTAE.

But seriously, where's my Virtual Console?

Lead the Meerkats is a terrible Pikmin clone.

Same thing with Donkey Kong 64. At one point in the game you have to play JetPac, which is now a Microsoft IP. They would have to replace the game and I don't think they want to go to all that effort.

As for Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island, that is one of my favorite games of all time. I WANT that on the VC.

broodwars, I could see them maybe releasing the individual versions of the SMAS games (maybe as WiiWare). I would love to play them since the improved graphics and audio really made them more enjoyable.

UncleBobRichard Cook, Guest ContributorJune 07, 2010

You know what I'd like to see on WiiWare?
Mario Bros. Arcade-like game based off the 4-Player GBA version from the Mario Advance series.

Hey, I'd buy that. But Nintendo would have to develop it. They haven't developed THING ONE on WiiWare or DSiWare.

TJ SpykeJune 07, 2010

That's a little exaggerating. They did develop Excitebike: World Rally, PictureBook Games: Pop-Up Pursuit, Wii Chess (which is WiiWare in Japan), Grill-Off with Ultra Hand!. Intelligent Systems (which IS a Nintendo first party studio, thus Nintendo) made WarioWare: D.I.Y. Showcase and Eco Shooter: Plant 530. They also helped with many other games. I didn't check DSiWare.

I will admit that I wish they did more internally developed games, and I especially wish they would use their main franchises more. Why not release Tetra's Trackers on WiiWare? That would give us outside of Japan a chance to play it.

At this point they have two choices with VC:
1) Guarantee a game a week
2) Put a bullet in it

Sadly, 2 is more likely at this point.

I think they will choose option 3: Leave the service as it is since the current games are selling fine.

AVJune 08, 2010

so i broke down and bought the fishing game Reel Fishing Challenge II .

Impressions:

They don't give you any kind of tutorial at all. You can find instructions in the main menu which is accessed by the minis button which is awkward. plus just stops the game.

The graphics are odd as the water seems to look pretty good, but it's a single screen and the 'trees and shore' are pre-rendered which look similar to old school Resident evil pre-rendering which is not good. The controls are simple but still have a learning curve. After minute it was fairly similar to Twilight Princess you move the wiimote left and right, hold A to lock and than make tossing motion which is effected by your power. The nunchuck reels in quickly , so does B button. The A button reels in slower. I still haven't been able to catch a fish when playing this game and the camera doesn't always seem to go into the water. Sometimes I would toss out my line and it won't go into the water to see fish, but when it does do the animation fish are always present. The fish animate well and in the water looks fairly good.

So overall I do like the game. I have only been fishing in real life once, and most of my experience in virtual fishing have been in zelda games. I really digged the fishing in Twilight Princess but I sold that game so I don't have access to that. I still kind of wish Nintendo would just release the fishing mode in Twilight Princess on Wiiware since that is fun, and the controls work great and it looks great but I think it might be too big for Wiiware.

Reel Fishing Challenge 2 seems to work fine, just is a bare bones fishing experience which is fine. The music is southern garbage with banjo strings and calming but I don't like it. The environmental music is nice and overall fits well, especially the reeling sfx from the wiimote speaker.

I still haven't gotten a hang of it, but I do like it overall. The game does keep score of your records which is fine, but it's a fairly basic experience and worthy of the $5 I spent not much more.

Here's my impression of Zoo Disc Golf, after having not played it:

It is a terrible representation of the sport.

You say that, but have you ever actually played Zoo Disc Golf?  The game could emulate animals playing disc golf in a zoo quite well. :p
