Though no official release date has been announced, a variety of new details have been revealed.

When WiiWare launched, LostWinds stood out because of its beautiful graphics, well-designed puzzles, and excellent use of the Wii Remote. Shortly after the game launched, Frontier confirmed that they had started work on a sequel.

The latest issue of Edge revealed that the sequel, LostWinds: Winter of the Melodias, will feature new abilities such as swimming, and the return of Toku the first game's protagonist. The major new puzzle mechanic is the ability switch seasons; Toku will be able to switch between summer and winter in order to solve specific puzzles. Another new feature is the power to summon cyclones in order to drill through rocks and siphon water.

While the developers were pleased with the first game, the sequel will include numerous improvements such as a new in-game map and a hint system.

Currently, there is no release date for LostWinds: Winter of the Melodias.

What nice news to wake up to. I loved the first. I am also glad they are fixing some gripes some of us listed after we played it.

I hope the sequel turns out well. While I wasn't a big fan of the first game, it had the potential of being something very special.

BeautifulShyAugust 29, 2009

I liked the ideas put forth by the original. It was pretty nice looking. Music was great.

I appreciated the effort of trying something different but for some reason the gameplay didn't always click with me. I guess I will play it again in a few months to see if I changed my view about the game.

Yeah, same here.  Probably the thing that bugged me the most is that you character can't even move 1 cm off the ground without you have to draw the wind up, plus there's something just bland about the gameplay that I can't quite put my finger on at the moment.  Frankly, I'm surprised it's taken them this long to formerly announce the sequel, considering it was a WiiWare launch game.  Hopefully this will be better than its predecessor.

BeautifulShyAugust 29, 2009

Um they said they were making one a couple hours after the original launched.

Yup Maxi is right just there was a lack of information about it until today.

Yes, but this is their first official w/ title announcement.  Before it was more of a "well, we'd like to make a sequel and we're probably going to do one" unofficial announcement.

BeautifulShyAugust 30, 2009

Look I think at this point it is ridiculous to argue semantics. Who cares if it was announced then or now. The point is we are getting a new entry into the series.

Isn't that nice onto itself.

AVAugust 30, 2009

i hope with all this time they really make a bigger game or have the sequels ready to release in a regular basis.

Either way I'm excited I very much enjoyed the original and I think this sounds pretty good so far.

You have to wonder if the scope/length of this one will be much larger. It has already been 18 months since the first LostWinds was released, so this sequel has had quite a long time to gestate, especially considering the developers already had so many tools in place to make the first one. I am looking forward to the sequel but would like to see more mobility for the character, as broodwars mentioned.

KDR_11kAugust 30, 2009

I thought NyxQuest was leagues better. LW2 will have to get at least close to that.

Flames_of_chaosLukasz Balicki, Staff AlumnusAugust 30, 2009

I agree with KDR although LostWinds was a great launch title for WiiWare.

MesuAugust 31, 2009

This is great news!

I was getting worried that the developers might have forgot that they wanted to make a sequel because they didn't say anything at e3.

Except they have been busy with a "Highly Disappointing" brown colored game since LW came out so I question how much of this time has been used to gestate proper ideas for a sequel.

KDR_11kSeptember 01, 2009

As long as it's Elite Highly Disappointing it's all forgiven though I'm worried about them dumbing it down for the console casuals (Elite is so oldcore the newcore is casual for it).

StratosSeptember 01, 2009

Well, I'm more worried they go the way of other companies like Factor 5 and drive themselves bankrupt making an HD game and going out of business.

KDR_11kSeptember 01, 2009

Come on, it's Frontier development, the whole purpose of that company is to produce Elite 4.
