No matter where you live, Square Enix will most likely have you covered.

Square Enix has filed trademarks for Dragon Quest IX that reveal the English subtitle to be Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Skies.

The Japanese subtitle, Hoshizora no Mamoribito, had previously been translated to Defenders of the Starry Sky.

Square Enix also trademarked other translations of the title, including: Les Sentinelles du Firmament, Centinelas del Firmamento, Le Sentinelle del Cielo, and Hüter des Himmels.

The game, which has not been formally announced for release outside of Japan, now seems closer than ever to an international release.

Dragon Quest IX was released in July 2009 in Japan, setting sales records with over 4 million copies shipped by September. This puts the game on track to be the best-selling Nintendo DS game ever.

I'm going to have a tough time transitioning to the new name.  I wonder why they even bothered to change it from the unofficial translation--everyone who's interested in the game already knows it by the old name.

Sentinels makes me think of X-Men, or that Arthur C. Clarke story.

I like Defenders better, but I'm still really pumped for this game no matter the name.

The official name has too much alliteration which makes it sound a lot sillier than it probably means to.  "Sentinels" is also a lot less common of a words as "Defenders".  I guess I'm making "people are too dumb; they need the more familiar word" argument but I think because it's a more common word it rolls off the tongue better.

Though I remember back when the second N64 Zelda game's name was unofficially translated as "Mask of Majora" and when it was officially announced as "Majora's Mask" I thought it sounded weak as "of" adds a certain epicness to a statement.  But I got used to the official name pretty quick.  For most it will probably be the same thing here.

I don't think it'll be the highest selling DS game ever.  I don't think it'll ever reach 5 million sold.  Its sales have slowed to a crawl.
