New Details About Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle Confirmed for Switch

Yes - Ubisoft is making a Mario RPG with their Rabbids and it's weird. Exclusive details and images within.

A more firm confirmation of the rumored Mario and Rabbids game has leaked out and we're able to confirm that, yes, Nintendo and Ubisoft are working on Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle on Switch and it is due out later this summer.

We received a few images from a source that are embedded in this article, detailing the pitch and concept of Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle.

The game is presented as an RPG that mixes exploration and turn-based combat. The exploration is estimated at 35% of the game with combat making up 65%. Each of the four worlds are "twisted" Mario worlds filled with references.

The combat is weapon-based as Mario and company can use guns for the first time (we can assume Yoshi's Safari doesn't count). Eight different characters can be used: Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi, and Rabbids dressed up as each of them. Combat is described as more tactical, and we've heard that it's more akin to a strategy RPG than what you might expect from a Mario RPG. On top of all that, the game can be played in co-op for two players as well.

Interestingly, Ubisoft appears to be publishing this game. It is estimated to be about 20 hours long and runs on Ubisoft's Snowdrop engine. The developers are Ubisoft Paris and Milan, who have experience with the Rabbids series, most recently with Rabbids Land on Wii U.

The goal of Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle was to be a surprise announcement at E3 that came out shortly after the announcement. While this leak blows the announcement at E3, the Switch release is still due out in August or September.

Be sure to check out all of the images in this article for more details. Also notice that the Mario-looking Rabbid is described as "The Macho Man" for some reason.

This looks really fun. I'd be excited for a more lighthearted RPG experience on the Switch. It's been too long since a decent Mario RPG has been on a main Nintendo console.

ejamerMay 23, 2017

Cool I think this could be really fun.

It could also be a bomb, but sometimes you need to roll dem bones and hope for the best.

SorenMay 23, 2017

So I guess this is what Ubisoft will use to justify dropping support for Switch in the future...

nickmitchMay 23, 2017

Aren't "The Crazy One" and "The Unstable" the same archetypes?

I like that Luigi's weapon looks like a vacuum.

KeyBillyMay 23, 2017

Hello darkness, my old friend.

Ian SaneMay 23, 2017

Seeing "kick-ass" being applied to a freakin' MARIO game is very strange.  Also Mario has stolen Mega Man's arm cannon!  Team him up with Mayor Mike Hagger and we're getting close to the sort of games I designed when I was a kid.

nickmitchMay 23, 2017

So, Yoshi's gun seems to be DK inspired? There's a barrel for the . . . shooty part, and what looks like a banana on the other end.

Also, Rabbid Yoshi's weapon has that Bowser Jr bib thing on it.

This game is already looking deep and rich with lore.

Order.RSSMay 23, 2017

This looks really stupid, but also potentially fun? Cautiously optimistic here.
Don't really like guns/blasters on Mario characters at first glance, and I've never liked the Rabbid designs. But this whole thing might be enough of a curiosity to warrant a look.

Turtle "shelves"?!

I dont really like turn based combat in games, so I think I will give this one a miss

MASBMay 23, 2017

I'll wait for E3 for video and details to have more of an opinion on the game itself. But based on what we cirrently know, I can't help but feel the game would be better/ more appealing if they got rid of the rabbids. But then again, to get rid of them would mean the game wouldn't exist, since the whole point of the game is to use Mario to bring the Rabbids back from the grave. The game may sell well, but I have a feeling it may do little or nothing for the Rabbids series ultimately.

Super stoked!!

nickmitchMay 23, 2017

I hope the gameplay is amazing but the story is insufferably stupid.

Turtle "shelves"?!

A byproduct of the slides being produced in (probably) French and translated to English by non-native English speakers.

I hope the gameplay is amazing and the story is played completely straight and deadly serious. It should be a compelling drama that never once acknowledges how ridiculous the Rabbid characters are.

AdrockMay 23, 2017

Mario is using an arm-cannon because sure. Remember when Nintendo had an entire series that revolved around a character who used an arm-cannon for like everything? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

Adrock is right, they should have made this a Rabbids-Metroid crossover instead.

Oh god. 🤣

Still a better idea than Federation Force...

EnnerMay 24, 2017

Mario is packing a different kind of heat this time.

This looks like it might be a dumb kind of fun. I'm eager to see more.

NemoMay 24, 2017

There was that game where Mario used a water GUN for the whole game, or was Super Mario Sunshine just a figment of my imagination?

NintendoDadMay 24, 2017

So here's a thought. What if NWR had this exclusive feature they had spent months working on. They knew it was good and would generate lots of traffic to the site. There was a planned countdown on the site to tease it. Two weeks before it's due to go live, and the day before the countown promo is to begin,  someone leaked the main contents to one of the usual voices on Twitter, Liam, Laura, Emily, take your pick. They naturally tweet everthing about it. NWR no longer has an exclusive and nothing to tease. Wouldn't that suck?

It'd be grand to justify having a staff the size of a small city on this site.

SorenMay 24, 2017

Laura Kate Dale knew about this since November 2016. And Kotaku published a report similar to this on May 2. They probably got the same art assets this site got.

So like a Hideo Kojima game?

More like a firehose than a gun.

I'm always looking for more good co-op games, so that aspect alone has me interested. As a fan of zaniness, I don't see any problem with this and am curious to see how it turns out.

As for the Rabbids games, I just have three of those, but I actually thought they were pretty good for what they were. It seemed to me that they suffered more from oversaturation than a lack of quality, though I haven't played the latest ones. It's been a while since the last release (I think...), so I don't mind seeing them again.

Just like Nintendo moved on from Metroid. :smug:

1993 says hi, Ubisoft.

StratosMay 28, 2017

Really hope we get Superscope 6 and Light Gun references. Those were classic.
