Could this be the return to form Sonic needs?

IGN has released the first trailer for Sonic Lost World, which shows the Blue Blur running through Green Hill Zone themed stages. The stages are broken up into floating platforms, reminiscent of Super Mario Galaxy. Also seen are the new enemies that Sonic will be facing in Lost World, as well as the classic roster of tiny cute animal life who Sonic seems to be protecting.

Sonic Lost World is slated for release later this year, and is exclusive to Nintendo platforms. The game was originally announced during a recent Nintendo Direct.

This looks like it could be a nice return to form for Sonic, and it appears that there is a mixture of both 2D and 3D platforming. Unfortunately we still don't know whether or not any other Sonic cast members will appear in the game. Check out the trailer below.

Yes please!

See? Enemies.

As far as return to form, I thought it's generally agreed upon that the last two Sonic games were already this return?

I would say that they've definitely been doing things right lately. As far as return to form, emphasis on needs. With any luck this could be what brings a lot of new people into the Sonic franchise and, if a man can dream, put him back on top where he belongs.

Super Sonic Galaxy!?

Superficial things of note.

-New enemies are just that enemies. No new playable characters so far.

-Looks like a whimsical cross between Mario Galaxy and Sonic Extreme.

-animal victims are back, Ricky, Flicky etc and they are stuck in the robots.

-Sonic's legs make a ribbon pattern during some forms of running.

- Eggman animal robots.

- enemies die with classic sound.

Real important things are:

- No auto boost where enemies literally mean nothing and they go flying into oblivion. You have to homing attack.

- Sonic's jump looks to carry weight and momentum unlike SA2.

- Stage looks linear but much more seems to be going on than ever control wise.

- Sonic isn't too fast, just enough speed to actually play the game.

- looks like real platforming in a 3D Sonic game.

This looks very promising. Colors and Generations seemed to be okay/good games from what talk I've heard and read, but Sonic does need a bigger, better, and splashier game to break all the bad memories in everyone. Perhaps that's an impossible feat, so at the least I hope Lost World will be great.

One tiny concern is that this first and early footage looks to be a step down from the graphics of Generations. This is only my first reaction and I may be incorrectly recalling the look of Generations. Also, the simpler style of Lost World may be so that the game is easier to play by making the platforms and routes more distinct and readable.

Yeah the graphics certainly aren't as nice as generations but things could change. Maybe this is not the "real" Sonic again but is ultimately 1000 times better than what ever comes out elsewhere. This game looks like real honest to goodness Sonic the Hedgehog in 3D. If Tails and Knuckles are playable in the same type of speedy platforming gameplay I will be very pleased.

Only thing left to do now is just wait and see if its any good.

Oh and I'm so glad the bad guys aren't some ultra serious melodramatic anime knock offs. Their designs don't appeal to me really but its better than some "realistic" serious BS.

the graphics look good, storywise, its a sonic game, though there is one, most people wouldn't bother with it if it was just story, the action is where the apeal is, all in all, a pretty well designed game, good Mario Galaxy-esque concept, and it should apeal to many gamers, casual and hardcore. Though to satisfy the hardcore gamers, there better be a plethora of secrets and unlockables

This looks amazing! Can't wait to see more.

Did you not play Sonic Colors or the HD versions of Sonic Generations?

Wish they had kept those enemies in the shadows, they look bad........

Sonic Unleashed set the template for the new games, Sonic Colors brought the story back to a simpler cartoony fun, Generations looked at the past, and Lost World is blasting toward the future.

Sonic Colors and Generations are very good games and while pretty fun I think they lack what made the classic Genesis titles so comparable to classic Mario titles. Those games did not translate what 2D Sonic was about into 3D. Auto boosting to the point that every enemy means jack and platforming that isn't nearly as satisfying.

I'm glad Sonic is going this route, because while the twitchy constant roller coaster stages are fun, the whole game shouldn't be that and Sonic should not feel like a car. Sonic should feel like a heavier, faster Mario where momentum is built up gradually and you can effectively and easily slow down if you want to.

We now know Sonic basically shifts gears. 1st gear is slow run, 2nd gear is medium run, 3rd gear rolls him up like a spin dash and blasts him off, just like the way it should have been year ago.

Sonic is the only playable character but hopefully Tails and Knuckles are unlockable extras.

Sonic started to get too cool. A BS kind of cool. The games were built around plot and visuals. Soon Sonic stopped rolling into a ball! What the EF is that? Just speed blitz enemies by doing almost nothing? Come on!

I'm optimistic once again about a Sonic game but even colors barely did anything for me. When I look at this though, it really looks like someone is in control of a 2 legged creature and not constantly on an auto rail just auto boosting.

They should rename it Sonic X-treme
