The Binding of Isaac Might Be Coming to the 3DS

The developer behind Super Meat Boy may see his latest title ported to the 3DS.

Edmund McMillen’s most recent title, The Binding of Isaac, may be coming to the Nintendo 3DS. According to McMillen, an unknown publisher is currently asking Nintendo for permission to port the PC game to the handheld. Additionally, Edmund stated that The Binding of Isaac is only being considered for release on the 3DS and would not be ported to iOS or other consoles.

The Binding of Isaac has the player take control of Isaac, a little boy who must navigate dungeons reminiscent of those in the original Legend of Zelda in order to escape from his homicidal mother. The game’s story is heavily influenced by the Biblical story in the book of Genesis that shares its name; however, this time the Abrahamic god instead calls upon Isaac’s mother to do the awful deed.

There is currently no word as to whether the game will be a retail or an eShop release. Nevertheless, past precedent involving other indie ports, such as VVVVVV, suggest that it will be a downloadable title. The publisher behind the port may even turn out to be Nicalis, the same publisher that ported Cave Story, VVVVVV, and NightSky to the system.

Talkback

Pretty sure that if this did happen, it'd be the first M rated game in the history of the eShop.

Heh, I wonder what the ESRB will do, on one hand it's drawn very cutely, on the other what's drawn like that are some of the most disgusting abominations gaming has ever seen.

Never heard of the game before, but more 3DS games (either retail or digital) is never a bad thing.

This game is about $5 on Steam, so I don't see it being viable as a retail release. It would have to be eShop.

Got this in the Steam sale for 89p and played it for about an hour. It's pretty decent, but nowhere near the standard of Team Meat's debut outing, Super Meat Boy. Like all roguelikes, it is a series of randomly generated dungeons, with various gameplay elements that are not explained whatsoever. It seems to take a lot of cues from NES Legend of Zelda. Music is good (same composer as Meat Boy), but the art is truly hideous. Not on a technical level, it's just that every character is a deformed mess that looks like something a sociopathic teenage boy would doodle in his notebook.

I don't think the arcade style lends itself to a retail release either. A successful run lasts maybe an hour and there's no saves or continues (you can find 1up mushrooms but they're rare). There's a persistent unlock system but runs cannot be interrupted.

Also KMJ needs to play the game more, it's fucking awesome.

Oh and the game is based on Edmund McMillen's childhood (more specifically the way he imagined all those tales his parents told him).

Granted, I haven't done a full run-through yet, so I'll give it some more time to grow on me. My only complaint is that it constantly gives you one-time-use items without telling you what they do. I also wouldn't object to being able to shoot diagonally, but that might make it too easy.

KDR_11kJanuary 02, 2012

It's a game about learning so figuring out what those items do is a part of getting better. On the other hand the pills are randomized every run. The only thing you can do about those is play as Cain (who supposedly cannot get bad pills due to his Lucky Foot).

Not sure how much of an impact diagonal shooting would have but I guess enemy patterns are designed for the 4 way shooting you do have. You can add some sideways movement to your tears by moving sideways while shooting.
