Red Steel 2 Sells 50,000 According to NPD

Ubisoft's MotionPlus-powered title is slow out of the gate after 12 days of sales.

Kotaku reports that Red Steel 2 sold about 50,000 units in the March NPDs according to financial analyst Michael Pachter.

However, those numbers are only from 12 days of sales, as Red Steel 2 came out on March 23 and the March NPDs only covered up until April 3.

"Considering that the NPD sales only accounted for 12 days on the store shelves and that NPD doesn't include all retailers we are looking forward to a complete month of sales data to see where we stand," a Ubisoft representative told Kotaku.

In January, Ubisoft cut sales expectations for the game in half from 1 million to 500,000.

We'll most likely have to wait until the April NPDs are released next month for the full story on Red Steel 2's early sales, but this early peek at the sales isn't too promising.

Not bad, their projections were only off by one zero

Were all of those packed in with WM+?

Yes, due to the fact that Wii MotionPlus is required to play the game. That means another 50,000 or so Wii MotionPlus's were sold.

Not a terrible number consider how late in the month in came out, I wish it was a little higher considering that the game has been getting good reviews (I haven't played it yet).

Wrong. Very very Wrong. There was a Non M+ version that was $10 cheaper in most stores. That's the version that I bought.

I also bought the no-MP version, seeing as I already own 3 MotionPluses and there's no good reason to own more than two at the moment.

TJ SpykeApril 18, 2010

This is the first mention i've seen of it, every PR and news release I saw said that it would only be bundled with the Wii MotionPlus.

Mop it upApril 18, 2010

I'm fine with these numbers, I actually expected it to be a bit lower. And I think over time, it might reach that second projection of 500,000 at some point. It seems like the type of game which could catch sales through word of mouth and such, if it is as good as reviews say.

KDR_11kApril 18, 2010

Don't blame me, I bought it (with M+ because the store sold that version cheaper than the regular...) but NPD doesn't care about me.

GKApril 18, 2010

Ditto on the M+ less version.

ShyGuyApril 18, 2010

I too bought the non-M+ version. I wonder how the profit margins were on M+ for Ubi?

Let's hope this game hits 500k worldwide by the end of the year.

StratosApril 18, 2010

I pre-ordered and recieved the non-M+ version too. I have two white M+ and a black one to go with my black 'Mote. I'll get another black one when I get a second black 'Mote. Then I'll mix and match so the black ones have white M+ and vise versa. I think that would look pretty cool.

You get the results that reflect how you push the game. Midnight advertising (and midnight commercials that significantly shows more live actors then the game itself) is almost the same as no advertising. I don't ever recall PS3 or Xbox 360 games ever having their commercials limited to midnight time slots and no network TV presence.

I don't really care anymore at this point in time. The game was enjoyable for me. I'd recommend it to others without any problem. However if Ubisoft loses money on this because of their lack of action and effort then too bad for them. I hope no one that developed this game is hurt. They did their job well. It's the marketing department that needs to have some changes yet that won't happen because Ubisoft upper levels will continue not to care in the end.

PeachylalaApril 18, 2010

It's a Wii game, from a third party. The only way for this game to get the attention it deserves is through word of mouth alone.

It will be just like the rest that get sent out to die.

KDR_11kApril 18, 2010

I don't think cel shading does well in the market.

Wut?
I saw plenty of commercials at all times of the day. I can't recall on which channels, but i saw the commercials all the time.
I think the main flaw to one commercial was when they claimed "Most accurate sword fighting game today" or something like that, and then the guy is swinging his wiimote and the sword on screen wasn't matching up to what he was doing. If I didn't already know that I wanted the game, that might have turned me off.

D_AverageApril 18, 2010

The game just needs more dancing, just add it Ubisoft!

I wonder if Jeff Gerstmann will reconsider his answer to my question at PAX East about the wisdom of keeping the Red Steel name. I think a lot of people got burned by the first one and don't read reviews or anything else that would inform them of the sequel's quality.

I don't think all the reviews pointing out that the controls and the graphical style are all this game has going for it helped any, either.  That's pretty much why I didn't buy the game.  I suppose the stigma of the name and Ubisoft on Wii in general had something to do with it as well, though I never did play the original Red Steel.

BeautifulShyApril 18, 2010

I haven't bought this yet and it does not have to do with Ubisoft's reputation on the Wii platform. It has to do with having to many games in my backlog and to many games that I want that are upcoming or recently released and not having enough money for them all.

This news doesn't surprise me at all, but whatever, I freaking love this game. Hopefully it'll inch its way to Ubisoft's 500,000 hope and get enough ground to get a sequel.

D_AverageApril 18, 2010

I predicted 20K.  2 is like a 5, but flipped.  So I win.

Red Steak 2 only has the most involving, intense combat in a first-person game to date.  It's not exactly something you can communicate to the millions of lazy gamers out there.

Sorry, but I already own Bioshock 2 and this game doesn't look like it does anything (outside the Motion + controls) that I couldn't enjoy better just replaying that game.  If you're only a Wii owner, sure it's probably worth checking out but as a multi-console owner I just don't see anything special in it.  And I have to wonder at this point who in this game's target audience isn't a multi-console owner with access to better games in the genre?

NinGurl69 *hugglesApril 19, 2010

You gotta realize there's a world of gameplay beyond twiddling a pair of thumbsticks.  I didn't ask about your enjoyment, anyway, because the point was about physical involvement, the mechanical relationship between the player and the walking meat carcasses you get to destroy.

This sets the pace for the rest of the year's "motion" extravaganza.  How many times are you going to use your "I can just play ___" excuse when then next round of products come out:  "why would I play Move ___ when I could play bioshock2"  "why would I play Natal ____ when I could play bioshock2".  With more ___ on the way, is it just fitting to dismiss them all?

At the baseline, RS2 works well, and is fun.  Those other it's-cool-to-not-be-lazy games are either measuring up to this, or back to Wii Sports Resort.

KDR_11kApril 19, 2010

It's pretty much a beat 'em up with some guns, not really comparable to BioShock.

NinGurl69 *hugglesApril 19, 2010

Wii is the machine that advanced beat'em-ups.  New life in classical gaming, once again.

Red Steel 2 freaking owns.

I haven't played Bioshock 2 yet (I want to), but to me that seems like comparing Final Fight to Doom.

Assuming I buy the Move in the first place (highly unlikely, given the slate of crap currently planned for the thing), then yes those games would have to pass the same scrutiny.

I'm a person who got into online multiplayer with exactly two games (Perfect Dark Zero, Halo 3), and even I agree with this.

Did I enjoy the crap out of Red Steel 2? Yes. Yes I did.
Do you have to rush out and buy it now? Nah, not really. Check it out when you get a chance. You'll most likely enjoy yourself, but the game isn't going anywhere.

It feels real weird to say that (especially when I labelled it one of the best Wii games), but that's just how I feel. Listen to me talk about it on Newscast if you want to hear this opinion vocalized.

I totally love this game, but I'm not advocating everyone run out and buy it. Shit, I probably wouldn't have bought it right away if I didn't review it. That's part monetary restriction, part "I have a monster backlog."

I think this is dead on.  I was honestly surprised to hear that Red Steel 2 was any good.  The first game blows so I assumed the sequel would as well.  I didn't even look for reviews, it was just dumb luck that I heard it was decent.  There were people on this forum talking about it during development but I just figured this was wishful thinking and that it made no sense to get hyped up about a sequel to a game that sucks by a third party that treats the Wii like a joke.

Good for Ubisoft for getting their shit together (they did the same with Assassin's Creed 2) but if this game bombs, it's probably the brand name.  The whole idea of a sequel is to associate a new game with a successful franchise.  It's supposed to be low-risk because those that liked the first game will be looking forward to the sequel.  But it seems like the whole purpose has been lost here.  You don't make sequels to lousy games because there is no positive brand recognition.  It's like Ubisoft has been so conditioned into thinking "sequel, sequel, sequel" that they failed to acknowledge the whole point.  I question the logic in making an Assassin's Creed sequel as well since that first game was the butt of jokes with the target audience.

Though if I know that Red Steel 2 isn't crappy like it's predecessor, why haven't I bought it?  Well personally I don't care much for Ubisoft but a big part of it is third party Wii games typically don't grab my interest.  Since I bought a PS3 many games that I'm interested in have been released or announced or already existed when I bought the system and I haven't had the time to get around to them yet.  I went from the Wii, where I felt I owned every game I was interested in and was begging for something new, to the opposite where there is a backlog of titles I've been meaning to try.  Red Steel 2 sounds good for a Wii game but when I own another console beyond a Wii, why would I bother with such a title?  The upcoming Metroid and Mario titles are games that have the potential to be good PERIOD regardless of what platform they're on so those are the sort of Wii titles that continue to capture my interest.  But when I don't even have time to sample all of the best of the best then it seems like a waste of time and money to settle for "pretty good" games.

This is the Wii's big problem and I think it's going to be a problem until the Wii 2, when Nintendo can more or less reboot and start fresh.  The Wii third party support has never cut it for anyone who owns another console.  And Nintendo positioned the Wii as everyone's second console so I think a lot of the target market for a game like Red Steel 2 is in this situation.  The third parties shit the bed, anyone who cared had to buy a second console, and now nothing but their abosolute BEST work stands a chance because someone who owns both a Wii and one of the other consoles has access to a good 90% of the absolute best games and has no reason to settle for anything else.  They think they just have to compete with the best third party titles on the Wii but they're wrong.  Ubisoft may very well be competing with themselves in that the new Splinter Cell was just released on the other consoles and is going to attract more attention than Red Steel 2.  A big chunk of the target demo on the Wii is probably playing Splinter Cell on their other console.

I'm going to guess that Ubisoft didn't look past sales figures, as the first Red Steel sold about a million.

This game is really good.  For me it vaults both No More Heroes and Muramasa as the best third party game, but what the hell would multiplayer have anything to do with it?  It isn't really a shooter, the best you could do would be duels.

ShyGuyApril 19, 2010

Yeah! what kbaker2002de said!

StratosApril 20, 2010

While I could see how multiplayer could be possible, I agree with the sentiment that it is not needed. Who demands that Zelda or Metroid has a multiplayer mode? (and we all know what happened to Metroid when it got multi...)

I cared about Metroid because it's Metroid, one of my all-time favorite series.  I also don't WANT multiplayer with that series, so it wasn't a concern of mine.  I didn't care about Bioshock and Portal until I read some reviews that said they were both amazing, so that's why I picked them up.

I'm not hearing the same buzz around Red Steel 2, I don't care about the Red Steel franchise, and from reading Neal's review RS2 sounds more arcadey than anything.  That's cool, but I have a dozen games that vault it on my "to play" list at the moment.

D_AverageApril 20, 2010

I'm still perplexed why the sword fighting in Red Steel 2 isn't one to one, or almost one to one like in Resort.  What is going on!?  Where is the motion control revolution (outside of sales)?

It's more realistic to have to take deliberate swings than to be able to waggle the sword around like crazy, and I'd assume it's way, way easier to program AI for.

YmeegodApril 21, 2010

RS2 is a great game, sure the price might be a little steep for what you get since the replay value is low but it's one of the better action games this quarter and makes use of M+.

Yeah, it really isn't selling to hot, might have been better off ditching the Red Steel name and created a new IP because it sounds like (for where I work/gym/school/ect) alot of people put it off because they disliked the orginal so they didn't even bother with the sequel.
