The NWR Award

Wii MotionPlus Announced

While this year was full of some pretty unbelievable news, such as the announcement of Sin & Punishment 2, the revival of mainline Mega Man with 9, and Club Nintendo's American release, nothing tops the unveiling of Wii MotionPlus. The news came right before E3, amidst rumors of a Microsoft unveiling of a motion sensing Xbox controller. Though revealed in a surprising manner, the news becomes more surprising when realizing the implications of the product's release.

Packaged with Wii Sports Resort, Wii MotionPlus will surely reach a large portion of Nintendo's consumer base, but it also has the potential to significantly segment the market. Aside from the N64 Expansion Pak, Nintendo has never released an accessory with so much potential to divide their user base. However, because the accessory provides such a distinct improvement over the current Wii Remote, it is possible that it will gain enough traction in the market to become a standard part of the Wii Remote setup, breathing new life into the Wii more than two years after launch. The potential of the peripheral, combined with the gamble of its introduction, made the announcement of Wii MotionPlus the Biggest News Surprise of 2008.

Runner-up: Sin & Punishment 2 Revealed
