Every year we like to recognize the best in gaming on Nintendo consoles.

WiiWare/VC - Best Shoot-'Em-Up

The NWR Award

Lords of Thunder

In the ever-expanding roster of shmups available to download onto your Wii, Lords of Thunder stands out from the crowd for a number of reasons. Its medieval fantasy theme and delightfully brazen CD-based metal soundtrack ensure it won't be confused with all those tales of single spaceships bringing down galactic empires. The presence of a life bar and a selectable level structure also eradicate the particular frustration of being killed by one tiny bullet over and over again just to try and see the next level.

This may all sound positively accommodating, but Lords of Thunder doesn't compromise on intensity. An impressive array of enemies big and small assail you relentlessly during the course of the dynamic level designs, which shift in pace and scrolling orientation as you make your way through the boldly colourful environments. Finally, the tight controls, upgradeable weapons, and screen-filling bosses mean that, while Lords of Thunder is definitely not your average shmup, it has everything a great one should have, and in spades.
