2001 Game of the year Award: GameCube
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Sure, I wish it had a more interesting array of single-player stuff (Adventure gets old REAL quick), but it's still one of my favorite games this year, and I know it'll be played for years to come. If you live in a college dorm, Melee is not optional. – Jonathan Metts
237 trophies later and this game still has me working tricks to get my fix… it has made me its bitch and I fear I can’t stop until I unlock it all. Talk to me in a few months, maybe by then I’ll finally be done. And all with a smile on my face. – Justin Nation
The action is fast and furious and it never dies down. This is the ultimate party game. – Mike Sklens
Many of my favorite characters in one Cubified game. Mmm... Cubey. – Mike Hrusecky
Super Smash Bros. Melee wins my vote. I was surprised at how much time I could spend playing the game all alone! – Michael Cole
I really couldn't agree on which game outshined all the rest until I got
a second controller and SSBM. My bro and I went at it all night. We had
the most fun that night than in the entire year. Heh, I won though. :D – Jeff Shirley
Tweaks, balances and subtle gameplay additions make this more than just an upgrade - it's a true sequel. There's something for everybody in this. – Ty Shughart
This game is every bit the system seller that Nintendo needed to ensure brisk sales over the holiday season. And why not? The game is pure gold ... outstanding multiplayer, and solid single-player experiences make the game an easy pick for GameCube Game of the Year. – Rick Powers
The graphics, sound, new characters, incredible levels, gameplay tweaks, trophies, extras and ALL THE NINTENDO LOVE! It’s almost too much to bear. Multiplayer Melee must be played to be believed but the one player modes are extensive and have kept me busy for much of my free time and I still know that I haven’t scratched the surface on the full experience to be had here. – Max Lake
The nostalgia, play modes, stages, music, graphics, and replay value are all in place and then some. Not to mention, it offers a solid multiplayer and single player experience that keeps you coming back for more – Colin Taibi
It's arguably the best game of the year, for any system, proving that flashy graphics aren't what make the game, it's the gameplay. – Steven Rodriguez
For the game that I was least excited about, I have to say it’s my favorite of the year. It’s a complete package. There’s plenty of stuff to do alone and with friends. Graphics, sound, control, gameplay…it’s all top notch. Plus beating the crap out of people with Pichu just flat out rules. – Billy Berghammer
Runner Up: Rogue Leader: Rogue Squadron 2
