Could we be seeing Nintendo's answer to LittleBigPlanet?

A photo has supposedly leaked out from Nintendo's E3 booth, and has revealed a possible new game entitled Mario Maker.

Judging from the photo provided, the game involves having full control of the assets from the original Super Mario Bros., and being able to make your own levels by placing pits, enemies, blocks, and more wherever you like. It is unclear if they intend to include other Mario titles.

Other character art seen in the picture, such as Kirby, Animal Crossing Villager and Pikachu, are reminiscent of Smash Bros. character art, a game that all three characters are confirmed to be in. Nintendo has yet to issue an official statement.

That'd be cool.

This would be a nice eShop title. It could even use NFC maybe for new level kit tileset dealies. Anyway, this might be a big announcement, but I would think it would have been kept secret better or there would be an NDA by Nintendo. Michael McWhertor's Twitter account hints that this is true, but I'm sure Nintendo would have put an NDA on it if was supposed to be a big secret.

This looks shopped. I can tell by some of the pixels and having seen quite a few shops in my time.

Yeah even then the display itself doesn't make much sense.

You've just been meme'd!!!

Someone hand him the disclosures to sign so we can use this on our MTV show Meme'd.
Tuesdays at 9pm.

a) Nintendo's done opaque curtains ever since New Super Mario Wii leaked early at the last E3 that a game benefited from showing up at (2009).
2) Polygon believes it, which means it's BS.
d) What BNM said.

Could be Nintendo Software Technology project, a continuation of sorts of Mario vs Donkey Kong. Later installments (unfortunately) scrapped Donkey Kong 94 gameplay for level editing a-la Lemmings.

JPG file seems to undoctored, according to fotorensics.

Awesome. It would be great to play a Little Big Planet type game with physics that aren't unplayable garbage.

steveyJune 06, 2014

Just to spite Nintendo, if they do announce it then I'm gonna go build my own wiibrew Super Mario Bros. level creator, with blackjack and hookers. In fact, forget the level creator!

tendoboy1984June 06, 2014

Well I've been reading conflicting comments about this photo on other websites, especially NeoGAF. Hopefully someone takes a better quality pic tomorrow from a different angle.

Call me crazy, but I was super hyped about LittleBigPlanet... until I played it.  Mario Maker won't interest me until there is an active community making good levels... and then only if Nintendo nails level curation and makes sharing and those levels.

I don't expect much.... and if this is Miyamoto's new 3DS IP...

PhilPhillip Stortzum, June 06, 2014

I could understand losing your hype after playing LBP due to its floaty physics, but the quality of levels from a lot of creative folks was quite high.

NeifirstJune 06, 2014

I'd be surprised if this turned out to be true.  If anything, I thought Nintendo might try to make a Minecraft clone rather than a LittleBigPlanet one.  Seems like the Mario tile sets would be somewhat limiting too.

One thing seems certain though: Nintendo will not likely go into this holiday without a big Mario title on one of its systems.

It's not a new IP, so this wouldn't be his new IP. The problem with LittleBigPlanet was that the controls sucked. Nintendo is good with their platofrming controls, so they could make the idea work.

I hope this is real, i'd love to be able to make my own platforming Mario games (legally). Hopefully it wouldn't be limited to just SMB assets though, at least add in SMB3 and SMW.

tendoboy1984June 07, 2014

Nintendo technically already had their answer to LittleBigPlanet with the Mario vs DK games on DS and 3DS.

PhilPhillip Stortzum, June 07, 2014

I don't think you can fairly compare the limited nature of Mario vs DK to the grand scope and capabilities of LittleBigPlanet.

ejamerJune 07, 2014

If it's true (and I'm not convinced yet) then comparisons to LittleBigPlanet might not be accurate - it's very likely that this would be much more limited in design. Frankly I'm ok with that as long as the physics aren't junk. LBP just wasn't very much fun to play, regardless of how robust the level design tools were.

Kaizo mario confirmed for wii u, wii u saved.
