874,000 copies of Nintendo's all-star brawler finds owners on day one in North America, making it Nintendo's fastest-selling game ever.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl Smashes Nintendo Sales Records

Wii Game Sells at a Rate of More than 120 per Minute

REDMOND, Wash., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- After just one week on store

shelves, Super Smash Bros.® Brawl for Wii has become the fastest-selling

video game in Nintendo of America's history. Since its launch on March 9, the

feature-packed fighting action game has sold more than 1.4 million units in

the United States, including more than 874,000 on March 9 alone. It has sold

at a rate of more than 120 units per minute between launch and March 16.

"Super Smash Bros. Brawl has made the leap from video game to cultural

phenomenon," said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America's executive vice

president of Sales & Marketing. "Game reviewers and the public alike praise

its fun game play and extensive, inventive content."

Super Smash Bros. Brawl features a nearly limitless variety of options for

players. Dozens of classic Nintendo characters like Mario™ and Pikachu®

are joined by industry icons like Sonic The Hedgehog™ and Metal Gear's

Solid Snake for all-out four-player battles. The endless customization keeps

players coming back for more. The previous game in the series, Super Smash

Bros.® Melee, became the best-selling Nintendo GameCube™ game of all time

with more than 7 million copies sold worldwide, so it's no surprise to see

this latest installment racking up record numbers.

"It's important to remember," Dunaway said, "that we have lots more fun on

the way: Upcoming titles like Mario Kart® Wii and Wii Fit™ will keep our

momentum going strong."

Mario Kart Wii launches April 27 with the Wii Wheel™, which lets

players drive their speedy karts with the intuitive feel of a wireless

steering wheel. It's another "bridge" game like Wii Sports™ that lets video

game novices and veterans play and have fun together. Wii Fit arrives May 19

with the Wii Balance Board™ to combine fun and fitness. It lets users track

their progress over time, and it's an easy way for every member of the family

to keep active and play together.

Remember that Wii features parental controls that let adults manage the

content their children can access. For more information about this and other

Wii features, visit Wii.com.

3rd parties are leaving with their heads down, faces cloaked, in Crystal Caravans.

I've seen better.

Another Million Seller on the Wii. How many is that now?

Ian SaneMarch 17, 2008

I'm very pleased to hear this and part of it is because this game really is very different than a typical Wii release.  Although I'm sure several people will claim that it's a perfect game for casuals and non-gamers, it really isn't.  So much so that it's almost like it was designed to be specifically in defience of Nintendo's recent casual focused attitude.

A lot of the appeal of SSB is the amount of Nintendo game references.  Many of these are really obscure stuff that only the most die-hard Nintendo fanboy nut is going to notice.  This game is designed for geeks by other geeks.

Nintendo often says that games can be intimidating.  SSB Brawl is remarkably so.  The insane amount of stuff is bewildering, even to a vet like myself.  Where do you start?  WiiSports cuts down on customization and tries to not clutter menu screens so that the average person can jump right into a game.  Brawl is like being presented with a freeway interchange with a dozen exits and ramps.

Though I think the most interesting thing of all is that this is a game that practically REQUIRES the use of non-standard controllers.  Who plays this with the remote?  It doesn't even feel like they even tried to optimize it for that.  This seems like it was designed for the Gamecube controller with the classic controller being an okayish workaround.  Even when the term non-gamer didn't exist Nintendo was never good at providing options.  I'm shocked they even allowed the use of a last-gen controller, let alone the fact that the game is so obviously designed for it.  When I think of Nintendo's blue ocean strategy I think of shoehorning everything into simplified remote-focused controls whether it's the best solution or not.  This is the opposite.

The whole game seems like a celebration of Nintendo and a rebellion against them all at the same time.  And it's selling which just adds an extra "f*ck you" to the top. :)

As my friend just said, which sums it up: "Still no UK date? I don't want to know"

The lack of good online options and constant lag also adds to the f*ck you ;) .

The casual fanbase let us down again....oh wait. Nevermind!

JonLeungMarch 17, 2008

For reference's sake, before Brawl, what was the previous "fastest-selling Nintendo game"?

That reminds me, I have to pick up the video games edition of Guinness World Records...

I do, Nunchuk style. It felt like having to relearn to ride a bike for the first few hours, but feels very comfortable now and I will never switch back.

...unless you meant the sideways approach, in which case god no.

I'm also intent on learening how to play the game wiimote/nunchuck style.

Now we wait to see if Brawl outsells Halo 3 as many people predicted in the long run. I don't think so.

KDR_11kMarch 18, 2008

While I haven't played Brawl since it's not even announced for Europe I have played Melee and I disagree with Ian's assessment if Brawl didn't change too much. First you got a character selection. They're all "licensed" characters so there's a good chance you'll know at least one or two of them from other games. Then you start playing which is pretty easy, just use the stick and A or B. Recovery jumps take a while to get used to but after five-ten minutes that's dione. Of course you aren't going to play at tournament level but high level players are rare anyway and the matches I played were mostly about positioning, items and button mashing, things that are easy to comprehend. In fact I've never seen anyone who really knew how to play SSB, myself included so just random mashing was enough.

Great news. Now maybe Nintendo can take a portion of the $70 Million they've made through SSBB sales and fix it's broken on-line!
